Here’s something that’s going to be huge at Cannes next year. A creative team in London has come up with the scathingly brilliant idea of lobbying the United Nations to grant nationhood to the enormous pile of plastic trash that has accumulated in the Pacific Ocean.

The team has given the Trash Isles its own flag, passport, currency and postage. Al Gore has signed up as the first citizen. Now all that’s needed, legally speaking, is for others to declare their citizenship. You can do so at the Trash Isles’ Change.org petition.
