The Abyss was a place of equality, and had always been designed as such. The games contained within weren’t fair no matter if the one who played was rich or poor, but regardless the drinks that would dull the sorrows of a crushing defeat were plentiful and the music was always ready for one to be lost within it. “Is it hell, or heaven?” the Count smiled at the various people going about their business on the lower levels of the casino, gambling, drinking, dancing, even in a time of utter turmoil his slice of the world would provide for the masses.

A whispered word into the earpiece he wore gave him signal that a guest he had sent invitation to had arrived. While by no means exclusive Abyss wasn’t somewhere one simply walked into, even if equality was enforced by nature the pleasures of his domain were reserved to only so many at a time, and a personal invitation allowed instant access past the lines and masses of people looking to gain entrance. He has his people lead his honored guest up to his private room overlooking the casino floor, filled with luxury beyond imagination. Art and jewels, the finest furniture, and of course a chilled bottle of wine whose value was unrivaled, sitting open next to an empty glass. “Greetings,” he turned with a flourish and raised his own glass. “A pleasure to finally meet at last.”

“Simply Count is fine, that or Espérer if you must,” he seemed rather morose for a moment but shook his head and returned to focus on her. By any measure she was an up and coming star, any kingdom would barter a high price to ensure her services were brought under their control, or at least not turned against them. 

“Bianca Durandal, or is it more proper to call you Astagina?” he liked knowing everything about those he brought into the Abyss, after all one had to balance their accounts of friends and foes in equal measure. And she could tip from one side to the next. “You are a very difficult woman to get a read on, but I’ve read your official mission history and I have to say I’m impressed,” he took a small sip from his glass. “I’m more impressed by what you’ve done away from the books, tell me, what drives a woman who could do anything to charge nothing for the most dangerous missions in the wilds, but a fortune in the city?”

“My name is Bianca Astagina, but I go by Durandal nowadays, but feel free to call me however you want, Count Olaf.” Yeah Bianca was still  a bit on guard, but couldn’t but have some fun in her own way there. Still, she heard him out, as she took a sip from her own glass of wine; Noting the taste to be rather strong. If anything, she trusted the Count enough for him to not put anything into the wine, as he was drinking it himself as well.

“Usually I’d like to keep my past hidden and quiet, not even talk about it; But with your insane information network, it wouldn’t be a matter of if you find out about it, but a simple when, is that not true?” Hence the question was rather easy to answer that way. “It’s all related to my past. I grew up in a village, a small one, and it was overrun by bandits. My mother and father died, defending me. The village wasn’t the best-off, too poor to afford even a single Huntsman.”

“So after I grew up and finished my training, I decided to help as many of those small settlements, villages and what other names there are, out of my own desire. The larger city’s and the kingdoms have more than enough money and Huntsman laying around, so me taking a fortune out of them doesn’t really make a difference in their large-ass budget.”

Now she stared at the Count, deciding to ask a question of her own. “I thank you for your words of praise, but tell me two things; Why have you specifically gotten me here and why the question? Is it about saving money or something?”

He listened to her tale with the polite interest of someone who had heard it all already but didn’t want to come off as rude, slowly sipping his wine and giving a few nods of the head at points to show he was still listening. However it seemed she was telling a different tale then what his sources said. An honorable and just death for her family to replace a sad tale. 

Of course given his own past as a man supposedly dead in the mine shaft he wouldn’t judge her for wanting to rewrite her tale to have some meaning added to it. No one wanted their family history to end with ‘and then my father died in a gutter begging for food’. It was simply too sad to imagine being kept to. 

And then of course she turned the question to him. “I’ve brought you here because you are a rare breed of person, you are someone powerful but with a conscious, which is to say you are a good person.” for the first time his words seemed honest instead of being laid with traps waiting to snap over her. “So, I want to offer you a deal.”

He pulled out his scroll and opened it, pushing it forward to show her a number with quite a few zeroes attached at the end. Enough to make it look like it was a mistake on a calculator. “This hires you on as a retainer for any special missions that might be required. There are certain...enemies that I have that require me to not have to explain why someone needs to go, simply that they do. This money pays for a lack of questions.”

Upon entering the room, Bianca walked up to the count, making sure to not show any outwards emotions, aside from some interest. “Indeed, we meet at last, Count of Monto Cristo.” Outwardly Bianca kept her cool, but inwardly she questioned whether or not she pronounced that right. If there was one thing she was bad at, it was remembering names and how to pronounce them. Oh well, she’d make do as she usually would.

“Or would you prefer to be called by your real name?” Bianca questioned, once she took a seat and filled the empty glass with the chilled bottle of wine, not even wanting to assume what kind of price tag was attached to it. “I know you’re one for flair and all, but do tell me, why have you summoned me here? Is it another contract? Do you want another rival of yours killed? If the price is right, I’ll do it and you know I will succeed.”

The Count took a slow drag from a cigar as he contemplated the young man in front of him. It was true that when it came down to it there was only one person who might know the information that he had used to enter the casino, but at the same time it was difficult to imagine the tale that had been spun. In all his travels the unusual had become common place, but such a miraculous rebirth seemed much to far from the norm to be real. “So then, Oscar,” that name felt wrong, too close to a man he had come to respect, and admittedly fear in some small way. 

“I believe you said that we had to speak?”

It would never stop being strange, knowing people before you had ever met them. Added to this particular conversation was the fact the man before him was terrifying if memory served correctly. A criminal who hid all deeds behind legitamate practices. Or rather a man whose every action was tainted with malice toward those who had seen his life destroyed. Regardless of which mask one chose to give him Oscar could only feel a slight tremor at the idea of what the man had done. “Y-yeah. Its about the lockbox you were keeping safe in your casino, A-2?”

That name brought back memories, right after all he had need to do had been done Edmond had simply wandered, lost in the haze at his half finished revenge when he had run into the dearly departed headmaster. It had given him a purpose, and in turn he had been given help to build his casino so long as he kept the lockbox safe from all who came. His other...activities aside he had never strayed from that. “Just knowing about that puts a certain level of suspicion on you child,” he smiled and calmly pulled a handgun on him. “So tell me, who exactly are you?”

“I really need to learn to stop thinking like a trooper and more like a leader don’t I?”

“I wouldn’t know, I am just a humble casino owner after all,” he took shot back his own drink and shuddered as its fire roared through his body, leaving a familiar tingling feeling in his stomach. “But if you want my humble advice, a trooper has a mission to do, and a leader has a plan that will be executed. The difference being one is a set point, while the other is long reaching. Use the tools before you and build a plan, and then go on your mission.”

“Ah, so you want to start a race war to ease your troubled mind?” The Count looked at the soldier for a moment. “Remember who you are, and what you represent as a member of the Atlas military, unless you are ready to renounce your ties with your country you will become the bang that ends whatever peace is left.”

“Yeah, yeah, I remember…I’m just tired of this cloak and dagger bullshit. The dude literally just DECAPITATED the White Fang…and we’re just gonna…sit back and wait? Im sure there’s a bigger picture, but I’m not sure what it could be.”

“The White Fang is more unified then ever before. The death of the high leader and Mr. Taurus’s ascension to the seat of power, especially given the…manner of her death… has brought them together. The only thing stopping utter devastation at the moment is the fact they are beginning to marshal their forces.” he pulled out a file and offered it to Ash. “These are some recent transactions between myself and the White Fang, I believe you will find the materials familiar enough, all that is missing is the dust, and you could build quite a few bombs from them.”

Ash flipped through the papers with a slight scowl on his face…which slowly faded as he absorbed the new information.

“Okay…well, if this is the case…I think I see why we aren’t gunning for him. Damn, someones playing the long game.”

“Indeed, and I fully intent to disrupt it,” he felt a smile play at his lips. “Or rather I fully intend to play a role in stopping it. I am not the fighter that you are.” he pulled out a short ranged tracker. “I spray all materials I sell with a small amount of dust that releases a specialized energy signature around it. With basic coordinates and this you can track whatever route the White Fang is using to ship supplies out, and from there...well use your imagination.”

He offered the other man a glass of amber liquid that smelled strongly of alcohol. “Of course, you found this from underworld contacts that you are unable to mention, and if you show results you might get your wish. So, to the misfortune of others?”
