Just a couple of beers I have enjoyed recently. Firstly @thesuburbanbrew East Coast is quality, perfectly balanced in every way. I think we need to start a petition so that this one sticks around. I quite enjoyed the two @counterculturebeer that were sent to me. They both did exactly what they said on the can. The margarita sour in particular was extremely well executed, a little salt, a little sour, a little lime and a touch of tequila for good measure. The @yeastieboysaus Hazy was just a no nonsense, solid beer. Allow yourself to be lured. @mephistobrewingco stout is here, launching officially tonight (May 7th) at @bar55ml. Dark roast, bitter dark chocolate and espresso coffee lead nicely into a medium-full mouthfeel and dry finish. Alcohol free beer. I haven’t really understood the need for such a thing in the past. If I wanted to have a break, I would just take a break but have actually had a few recently while on paternity leave. So was very interested when @bigdropbrewco_au @bigdropbrewco sent me two of theirs. The IPA has a great aroma of citrus, namely orange and there is some of that which transfers to the flavour but still has that alcohol free after taste and the mouthfeel is a little watery which is consistent with other 0% beers. The stout is actually quite good. Checking out @ogrebrewingco for the first time with the Ogre paddle. First impressions are super solid and clean beers. The pale is light and tropical, the amber does its job with caramel maltiness but the smoked porter is where it’s at. I am not usually one to drink ginger beer, I mean the alcoholic version anyway because I don’t mind Bundaberg ginger beer but rarely buy it. However, this is delicious. Just a little bit of sweetness and a good ginger burn. @littledragongingerbeer is a new venture from the cats at @stoneandwood (see what I did there, 🐱). Not only does it taste delish but they are also donating a portion of sales to Australian animal conservation, another reason why my cat is in the picture (that and my sweet joke). Cooking a cutla steaks and cracking the @mismatchbrewing batch 2 Hazy IPA. That Sabro is quite dominant through zesty lime and coconut flavours. It is interesting to have the lime come through so much in a beer from a hop but it works with tropical mango and papaya also having a say. I have been quite impressed with the @counterculturebeer beers that I have tried. A good balance between trying something a little bit different and drinkability. Single hop Azacca from the legends at @akashabrew takes on West Coast IPA vibes. A good lurch of resin and pine meets some sticky caramel malt notes. Probably a tad thin body wise but quite enjoyable overall. https://www.instagram.com/p/CMt9sR5Fbr4/?igshid=c3kze6q326hy

I am very grateful to @stompinggroundbeer for sending me their Into The Wood series beers. They are super interesting and match their descriptions pretty much bang on every time. This one is Cherry Brett Saison with is fermented with Belgian Saison yeast and aged with Brettanomyces and Victorian Cherries. It has a lovely deep red colour, with elements of wood (not oaky but just wood), cherry tartness and huge Brett characters. My personal tastebuds can’t get past the big Brett characters but as it warms, the cherry comes through more which is appealing to me. https://www.instagram.com/p/CMq8-w8FvHe/?igshid=119wkppb0reif

Cracked open a @van_dieman Fence Line this afternoon to ride out Adelaide’s crazy weather cycle. This one is a blend of 1, 2 and 3 year old spontaneous beers that have been aged on oak. The super interesting part that I really like, is that it was brewed with estate grown and malted Pilsner, raw estate grown barley, raw estate grown wheat and aged estate grown hops. The end result is a balance of a decent acidity, not over the top funk, a touch of oak, notes of fresh pear which offers a touch of sweetness, all while finishing with a bite of savoury and a lingering dryness. https://www.instagram.com/p/CMWR5KGFLjL/?igshid=19qnqmdowp0mx

The Chronicles of Nelson Smart, Beer Connoisseur/Geeks by Matt King aka @the_craftbeerking I had the pleasure of bumping into Matt at @beerandbbqfest in Feb, then got to have a proper chat at the book launch at @thesuburbanbrew last week. Matt’s book is a fun, light hearted story (or 10 short stories) about mateship and a shared love craft beer. Tales of Brew days, Beer Festivals, Beer tastings are all in there. There’s even a nod to my favourite style of book that was popular in the 80’s.... you’ll know what I mean if you read it. There’s lots of ‘laugh out loud’ bits, as well as moments where I held my breath waiting to see how things would turn out for Nelson and his friends on their beer adventures. I loved the clever references to Adelaide Craft beer pubs and breweries, even if I nearly busted my brain trying to figure some of them out. Most of all I loved Nelson and his obsession with craft beer. He has his quirks but if you’re a craft beer enthusiast you’ll also relate to him in one way or another. I recommend reading with a beer in hand; it will make you thirsty. Thanks Matt for the great read! Public holiday Monday calls for something a little stronger. @mismatchbrewing Triple Crush sits at 10% ABV and is a juicy beast. A touch of malt sweetness starts off before the onslaught of tropical fruits, namely pineapple and passion fruit.
