SOPHIE RAE, Palm Trees, Mono Print

We welcome illustrator and printmaker Sophie Rae to The Crazy Fox from the 28th Febuary until the 23rd of March.

Sophie has developed her own unique way of printmaking. After sketching out her designs she carefully cuts them into stencils, then she mixes her oil-based inks to create beautiful colours. The stencils are placed onto paper and a roller is used to apply the ink through the gaps, gradually building up layers of shapes until the image is complete.

Often inspired by the natural landscape, she loves to travel. Her trip to India this year has inspired her most recent prints, which she made whilst Artist in Residence at Chhaap Printmaking Studios in Gujurat.

ABOUT THE ARTIST // AMY VANS

“Much of my work reflects the different countries I have been to and the people I has met along the way. Most notably, living in Barcelona amongst the vibrant art scene, and the intensities and richness of India, fuelled my passion for colour.

In Australia and later in Barcelona I was mentored by emerging Australian artist Mirabela Varga, with whom I share a delight in the brilliancy and plastic qualities of acrylic paint.

Many of my paintings tend to offer an impression of the lights of city streets at night and are also influenced by the light and bustle of Barcelona, with a passing nod to Gaudi's multi-coloured mosaics. They have a rich surface texture and many layers. I work very spontaneously, regularly changing my palette and experimenting with different processes.

It’s only occasionally that I set out to do anything representational. Mostly I’m interested in exploring the colours, textures and depths that I can create. I paint what's in my head and the image develops as part of the creative process.

Since moving to Bristol in 2014 my work has been shown in the Grant Bradley Gallery in Bristol and the Boundary Art Gallery in Cardiff.”

Fiona creates colourful and playful collages using hand-textured, cut paper. She enjoys the simplicity of shapes and contrasting colours as well as combining cutting by hand with the flexibility that working digitally provides. ‘I illustrate purely because it’s what I enjoy, and I’m chuffed that I’ve always known that making in some way is what I want to spend my time doing. I enjoy the whole process, from noting down ideas, sketching, cutting and Photoshop assembling to the less exciting parts like packaging, emailing and researching.’

I have always been in my element in nature. I have been painting landscapes for many years often focusing on painting large expanses of the landscape. Recently I have concentrated on drawing in ink. I have focused on the small often hidden aspects in nature. It is amazing what can be seen if you look no further than a hedge or what lies at your feet. I am always collecting objects found lying on the grass from sheep’s skulls to delicate feathers. I am fascinated by the wonder of birds’ nests, the amazingly crafted homes often hidden till winter when the fallen leaves expose these little wonders.

In these drawings I hope to share my fascination with these wonderful objects.

INTRODUCING SIMONE SDOLZINI

Simone Sdolzini was born in San Benedetto del Tronto(Italy) , he spent his childhood between Fermo , Porto San Giorgio and Citano’ Fra. After high school he moved to London ,where he discovered his drawing talents. In 2011 he started at the University of Fine Arts in Macerata (Italy), where he attended an illustration course. In 2013 he spent his Erasmus (exchange programme) in Madrid studying at Ces Felipe II.

Simone currently works as a tattoo artist and dedicates his free time to painting, illustration, creating murals , and making comics and sculptures

He is part of the collective “Uomini Nudi Che Corrono”, with whom he collaborates and participates artistically in festivals and concerts matching exposition with live-painting.

He has also collaborated with the webzine Freackouters (Napoli) where he writes and illustrates articles in the monthly music column.

He also released two screen printed books titled "Dreaming” and “Eating” respectively .

In 2014 he participated with his comics in the book “10 Lune” edited by Bel-Ami (Roma), 10 stories by 10 different italian illustrators.

In December 2014 he finished university and the moved to Bristol with the hope to survive doing what he likes.

The series of prints were inspired by the seemingly unremarkable deaths of animals and insects I kept finding around Bristol, which I originally combined into a self-page-turning living book as well as a miniature death certificate document. Did you know the beetle upstairs actually died from his obsession with bodybuilding? His shell was so heavy that it fell in on him.

Katharina works in Bristol as a freelance illustrator and workshop facilitator. She creates detailed and intricate drawings, mainly inspired by nature and environmental concerns. She enjoys experimenting with printmaking and making ethical hand made products, which you can find in local independent shops including CoLab, Room 212 and Shuffleshowroom.

"I love making products by hand. Alongside my illustration practice I experiment with printmaking and alternative materials to work with to produce limited edition prints and products".

Katharina's products are ethically sourced where possible including awareness surrounding the impact on the environment and people involved in making a product.

Cai Burton is a young, Bristol based artist. He creates black and white illustrations by hand using different types of line and patterns. He incorporates zentangles and mandalas into his work, and uses the city of Bristol as inspiration in his pieces. He's worked on a variety of projects across Bristol including creating Co-LABs Spring window display and T-shirt design as well as painting for the Upfest street art festival.
