In the early 1980s, my mum bought the Snoopy Tennis Nintendo Game & Watch; twenty years on it was mine. I loved it: the two games were simple but challenging and I was good at them, and it looked great. The visuals consisted of black images that looked like they had been stamped into the screen against a half-assed colour background, and if you tilted it the right way against the light you could see the shadows of all of the game elements mapped out perfectly. The liquid crystal display allowed only for pre-defined movement with very satisfyingly limited animation. It was so simple, but brought two generations a lot of joy.

My piece for the Creative Gamers ‘Nostalgia Console’ exhibition at Juno in Shoreditch, London. I chose a favourite console from my gaming past: the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis.

 ‘The Sega Genesis has Blast Processing!’ That was the gimmick Sega used to persuade gamers to buy its new console. All that processing power promised gamers the satisfaction of performing Liu Kang’s infamous Mortal Kombat II “fatality”, in which the character transforms into a dragon and devours the top half of his opponent, in 64 glorious colours accompanied by a menacing 16-bit soundtrack. No longer would players have to practise their moves at the arcade, they could now experience the thrill of claiming a victory over a friend at home. For me this is where the nostalgia of the Mega Drive/Genesis lies.

The plasticy 3-button controller, the incandescent glow of an old CRT television and the necessary blow of the cartridge before inserting it into the console are all important characteristics of that console; but it was experiencing it side-by-side with a friend that defined it.

This artwork of Scorpion and Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat is part of a bigger thing which I will be posting soon. I enjoyed going back to the same style I used on the Xbox A-Z picture.

Spent hours trying to upload this yesterday! Finally though, finished drawing out elements from all 18 games from my chosen console for our upcoming exhibition on 1st May at Juno on Shoreditch High Street! Really enjoying this :))
