hey bee, I saw the new ask blog's first answer and... tbh that's not on. making light of mental illnesses is never okay, I won't be interacting with Emma's blog while she calls the asks 'the voices'. I'm not even sure if I'm comfortable interacting with you at all honestly. Ableism isn't something I can just let slide.
Hi anon! Thank you for bringing this to my attention, and I completely understand. I don’t mind if you message me privately about this so we can talk it out, but until then I’ll do my best to explain.
The reason Emma calls them “the Voices” is because they’re exactly that, voices! They are real people that are talking to Emma (via Tumblr, but she doesn’t know that).
This takes place in the late 1950s, so the internet doesn’t exist to her yet. Emma is not schizophrenic, nor does she have a specific mental illness that causes someone to have audio hallucinations, and I would never make light of something like that. This is merely a fictional explanation for a real-world mechanic. “Voices” is a generic term that can apply to a lot of different things, which is why I used it. As of yet I’ve never heard it used in an ableist way, but I acknowledge that I could be wrong about that.
Emma has heard voices before (through supernatural means), and because of that specific experience she does not yet have a good opinion of them. And she knows that they are real, even if she doesn’t know who they are! So she is not entertaining hallucinations or intrusive thoughts, which I know can be a harmful thing to encourage.
There is also a plot reason as to why/how she hears YOUR voices, but that is yet to be revealed. (It is meta, which I think can be deduced.)
It is never my intention to make light of mental illness, which is why I try not to assign specific illnesses to characters, especially when the meta or supernatural is involved. That can cause stigmas and harmful stereotypes and I am very against that. Fiction is fiction, and if you want to represent something real in fiction the proper research should be done before attempting it.
IN SUMMARY: Emma calls them the Voices because she has no other name for them, and it is not meant to represent anything other than the questions that readers send to her. It is not meant to make light of mental illness. She is simply an annoyed person who would rather be left alone, so she’s snarky and sarcastic.
I don’t want to over-explain for fear of causing confusion, but I hope this brought some things to light. If you have more questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
If you’re still uncomfortable with it, I completely understand and you are absolutely welcome to avoid my blog. Please do what makes you feel comfortable. But also please try to understand my heart. My goals are to tell a compelling story, not to harm anyone or cause discomfort. I’m also, however, aware that I can’t please everyone, as much as I would like to. Its very much a balancing act.
ONE MORE THING: If you are someone I’ve talked to before and/or made friends with, please message me privately so we can talk! I’d hate to break off a friendship because of a misunderstanding or disagreement and not even know who it is.
