I’ve driven across the country so many times at this point that all the trips have begun to blur together. Except particular moments like this night. When we pulled over on a cold, lonesome Wyoming highway in the middle of the night to look up at the night sky. This shitty long exposure doesn’t do even come close to capturing the show the universe was putting on that night. And later pulling off for the night and finding a place to sleep. We then woke up and found it to be the most quaint little town with a REALLY amazing breakfast diner. Thanks Donna!

Thank you all for your birthday wishes, and I am sorry that I have sucked in replying to most of them. I’d consider it another (semi) successful trip around the sun. Though, it was quite the turbulent ride. But...I’m excited to see what the coming year holds. That being said, I’m hopping offline for a bit to refocus while beginning a new chapter.

Been traveling for a week all over America. We were unlucky in seeing the National Parks we set out for due to the government shutdown (and my cars inability to drive on snowy roads for 400 miles), but we found some pretty cool lesser known spots instead. Like this horse ranch in Utah.

A year ago I sold all of my stuff and moved across country, and I had no idea what I was doing, or what I wanted to do. I thought I was completely directionless. I was questioning everything I had done up to that point. I was not in a good place, and I rang in 2018 bed ridden from anxiety.

Today is a different story. I have a much better foundation of who I am, what I’m doing, and where I’m going. This year built a lot of character and is leading me into 2019 the strongest I’ve ever felt. 

In 2018 I....

- moved across country

- hiked 5 days to Machu Picchu

- moved back to altanta

- got a great new apartment

- joined the DGA

- got a huge promotion at work

- got over the guy

- got under a new guy to get over the old guy

- got over that guy too

- rode in a helicopter at work and got paid well for it

- over dosed on an edible and puked my brains out on hollywood blvd for 3 hours

- had a severe posion oak outbreak that last for a month. Pure misery.

- Booked a flight to Indonesia

-went all over the country

- got offered my first 2nd 2nd AD job today

- got paid as a PHOTOGRAPHER for the first time ever. It’s finally a side hustle!

There is something very meditative about the open desert road for me. My often loud mind goes quiet, and I am focused there. Especially at dawn. That first breach of light over the foothills. Everything is still, except for me. I’ve found so much solace in those long drives, in these moments where the universe puts everything in your favor. I took this 3 years ago, on my first solo trip cross country. And there’s not much special about it visually other than the feeling it brought back for me. The feeling of complete liberation. The excitement of the unknown. That I could just go and go for days--wherever I wanted. 

This photo re-inspired me to get back on the road, so I am going to go soon. To wherever. With a friend and a few cameras in tow.

Another season down, and I’m still happy and damn proud to be here. It’s not about being “the biggest show on television” or anything like that. It’s about all the things not widely seen by the world. The friendships and camaraderies formed.

It’s about the greensmen who forge their way through the thicket, and poison ivy just to cut down a weird looking branch that’s in A cameras frame. Or the script supervisor who’s sitting in a field buried in paperwork trying to get her work done (while she is usually simultaneously taking care of her kids, and trying to sell a house, or book some appointment)

The teamsters pulling trailers tirelessly through the mud, and moving trucks even though “we were never supposed to look that way on the scout”. The PAs standing in the heat in deep lockups wondering how on earth this makes sense. The guy in basecamp who carries the best attitude and work ethic.

The studio custodian who, without fail will always greet you with a smile at 5 in the morning when she unlocks the doors for you. The camera assistants who drive 2 hours each way to work 16 hours day. The ones who uprooted their lives from across the country to be here, and are genuinely happy to get that coffee for you. The snack techs who keep our stomachs full when resources are far away.

I could keep going, but it would take a novel to really write about everyone here and why I’m continually impressed and inspired. This show never gets easier.

My line of sight is a bit skewed lately. Though, I’m thinking that it actually isn’t supposed to be linear. Maybe it’s meant to be a disorienting experience to help me discover the intricacies of a bigger world. Nonetheless, living is learning, and learning means changing.

I’ve been trying to live for the small moments more lately.  I get so caught up in chasing the big ones, that they often get overlooked. I’m thinking that maybe real happiness could be as simple as the joy you feel seeing your friend laugh. Or the sunrise. That first sip of coffee in the morning. The older I get the more I realize happiness isn’t necessarily related to social status, money or a successful career. Happiness is mostly the little things. A good meal. A good view with a fresh cup of coffee. Fresh air. A friend to share it all with and have meaningful conversations. Some of the happiest people I’ve seen had very little. But only in my eyes.

A face tells a story. Every laugh line, sun spot, or scar acts as a living memory board of moments gone to the wayside. I love a compelling and well-lived face. . . There’s graffiti near my apartment that I walk by every day that says “Be human in all that you do” I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately, and what it means.  I’ve been trying to ascribe meaning to my own life. Questioning my place here. Feeling like nothing I really did mattered or was making a positive impact, and I was having trouble finding value in things I’ve invested so much time in. 

We all have opportunities to create our own meanings, and attribute great esteem and value to each other.  All of us, from youth to old age are drunk, stumbling around in the dark for a kebab. I’m scared and unsure and I want to acknowledge this rather than repress it. Everyone wants to feel wanted, appreciated, and heard. We often put up this big bravado that we don’t need any of that. But…It’s a lot cooler to care. To let your guard down. To be vulnerable. And to take a risk.

All things I’m still struggling with, but I’m abundantly aware of, and am working on. We can find meaning in small things. Even if it’s just making someones day a little brighter by a small gesture.  is anyone still reading this? probably not. ok great. Aliens are real. I cried while watching the Food Network once. I never learned algebra. People who don’t like the song “fast car” cannot be trusted. And I don’t know what dabbing is but it sounds gross.
