time for 'oh fuck i forgot to write up that post about grindelwald's wand' !! 

firstly: remember that weird wand from deathly hallows that is really only visible in one picture ? yeah, me neither. here is what it looks like ( i ; ii ). it's - bark. it's a twig. my personal headcanon is that five year old gellert just started punching a tree until a twig fell off and he proudly exclaimed it was a wand, and THEN he got his real wand from gregorovitch when he was slated to attend durmstrang. he just keeps around his weird bark twig because of sentimental reasons. yeah. that must be it. 

( for comparison, here's victor krum's wand ( i ; ii ), which is the only wand that is confirmed in canon as made by gregorovitch. note that it's carved - if gregorovitch was known for 'rustic wands', he wouldn't have carved any of his wands. i headcanon grindelwald's original wand as made by gregorovitch simply because he was the most famous wandmaker of the area. there is no part of grindelwald that comes off as rustic - at least, certainly not more than krum, and the wand should reflect the owner, correct ? ergo : what the fuck, prop designer. ) 

with that said, gellert grindelwald's wand, as told by ginger me, is a 14 1/2" brittle ebony wand with a dragon heartstring core. heavier than it looks, with a clean taper at the tip, and a swirled design at the bottom.

length: 14 1/2″. far be it from me to go on about this section, but gellert’s canon wand the wand which must not be named is already quite lengthy, so it only makes sense that his wand would continue that trend. longer wands tend to be for larger personalities.

wood: from the HP wiki ( though, keep in mind that ollivander and gregorovitch disagreed on a lot of wood meanings, so i can only hold this to a certain degree of truth ) - 

“This jet-black wand wood has an impressive appearance and reputation, being highly suited to all manner of combative magic, and to Transfiguration. Ebony is happiest in the hand of those with the courage to be themselves. Frequently non-conformist, highly individual or comfortable with the status of outsider, ebony wand owners have been found both among the ranks of the Order of the Phoenix and among the Death Eaters. In the experience of Garrick Ollivander, the ebony wand’s perfect match is one who will hold fast to his or her beliefs, no matter what the external pressure, and will not be swayed lightly from their purpose.”

core: the only canonical core that gregorovitch used is dragon heartstring - but it’s fitting, either way. powerful, quick to learn, with a flair for the dramatic and a tendency to be temperamental, easily inclined to the dark arts.

flexibility: there isn’t much on flexibility notes, but the brittleness of his wand, in my opinion, is reflective of his own volatile personality? he very much lives on the edge of his emotions and insecurities - struggling between reserving them and being unable to hold them back. because he straddles this line his entire life, he has sort of become a master of his wand, despite how easily a brittle wand can break with flashy or particularly violent spells - making him a unique owner. it’s also why i headcanon credence being able to win its favor and use it proficiently; the loyalty it has to its owner ( and grindelwald willingly gives it up to be used by someone he thinks is worthy ) and the same sort of struggles that credence faces make him a good match.
