This photograph of mine was paired with a poem from George Ella Lyon titled Breaking over at The Oxford American today. The moving poem is about the grief process of losing a mother, specifically two years into that grieving process. Sometimes I question “coincidences”, I wonder if there is some type of Spirit of the Universe at play. I lost my mother to cancer in November 2014 and this photograph and several from the working edit of The Florida Heartland were made in the following months after her passing, a real acute phase of grieving her loss. I’ve been open about the therapeutic value of making The Heartland pictures in response to her passing, so needless to say when I saw the content of the poem I was bit taken aback - then I shot a little glance upwards.
