What is The Archive?

The Disability Book Archive is a free, searchable collection of disabled literature. It is not a library or a store; you cannot buy or borrow books here, but, hopefully, you are given enough information to find them for yourself.

Books on the website are grouped by disability and author, as well as several other different categories:

Do not be hateful about it. Just tell me honestly what your issue is and I will do my best to look into it. So saddened to learn that human being, author of Disability Visibility, activist, and friend Alice Wong has passed on.

Hi everyone, it looks like I ran out of time. I have so many dreams that I wanted to fulfill and plans to create new stories for you. Just read a great book called Wild and Crooked by Leah Thomas. One of the main characters has Cerebral Palsy (A more mild form) and his parents are a lesbian couple. The other main character is also a lesbian. A side character has ASPD. It's also implied that the character with CP is bi but it's never confirmed iirc.

I would like to hear everyone's favourite book featuring a disabled character!

and if you don't have one, I want you to follow this post or go do some research and find one to read!

disabled people get left out of diversity recommendations a lot, which is ridiculous given that we intersect with every other marginalisation possible. so today, we are going to do something about that

I'll start by recommending two books because I can never just suggest one book 🤭

The Degenerates by J Albert Mann is my ultimate disability rec because it's based on actual disabled history and shines an important light on how we've been treated - and in some places how we're still treated

Compound Fracture by Andrew Joseph White is also getting recommended because I just can't stop thinking about it. but also because two of its leads are disabled, both with facial differences and neurodivergences

I really loved the graphic novel Navigating with You by Jeremy Whitley, illustrated by Cassie Ribeiro. It feels really authentic in the disability rep but also has the cutest sapphic story.

And this one's obscure (out of print, but on openlibrary), which I found in looking for a book for the country of São Tomé. The Exiles of Crocodile Island by Henye Meyer is about a group of Jewish children kidnapped by the Portuguese to settle an African island. The way it follows one of them through dealing with and eventually accepting a disability caused by head injury is really sensitive and well-written.

Also going to honorable mention On the Edge of Gone by Corinne Duyvis for the autistic MC.

I second the Compound Fracture recommendation! Perfect for horror/familial revenge lovers who want good trans autistic or physical disability rep (and no, Lady does not die, but do check TW’s for this one). His other two books, Hell Follows With Us and The Spirit Bares Its Teeth, feature trans mcs, HFWU has an autistic love interest and TSBIT’s mc is autistic too. AJW is in the middle of writing at least two other books now!!

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse has a badass blind mc, although I must digress it does have a ‘magic spell that can make you see’ thing a few times.

And perhaps it’s stereotypical, but by god do I love Six of Crows.

I'm very late to the party, but I come bearing many recommendations!

First of all, I'm seconding Six of Crows.

Gotta recommend the YA contemporary novel May the Best Man Win by ZR Ellor (@zabe-books), which has the first good autism rep I've ever read. I related so hard to the autistic character.

The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner (@meganwhalenturner), for which I am feral, has a major character who deals with limb loss and subsequent prosthetics, and the narrator of the last book has cerebral palsy. Truly an amazing fantasy series; cannot recommend it highly enough.

Hench by Natalie Zina Walschotts is an adult superhero novel whose protagonist deals with a disabling injury that leads to chronic pain, and I LOVE its social commentary.

The Montague Siblings trilogy by Mackenzi Lee has a lot of diverse representation across race, sexuality, and disability. Disabilities the main characters have include PTSD, addiction, epilepsy, and truly debilitating anxiety. This series took me a while to get into because I found the narrator of the first book insufferable at first, but I loved it by midway through book one.

A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall is an AMAZING Regency romance featuring a trans woman in love with her childhood best friend, who uses a cane due to a war injury that also left him struggling with PTSD and addiction. Angsty in the best hurt/comfort kind of way.

The protagonist of the first two books in EL Massey's (aka @xiaq's) Breakaway series, Like Real People Do and Like You've Nothing Left to Prove, has a traumatic brain injury that causes seizures. The protagonist of book four, Free from Falling, is autistic. I read Like Real People Do and Like You've Nothing Left to Prove back when they were fic on AO3, and I love the entire series so much.

I debated adding some other books, because I seek out disabled rep pretty frequently, but I decided to focus on books I love and unreservedly recommend. I hope to someday be able to add some of my own books to a list like this!

hey guys, can someone please recommend me a fictional (not historical, not real life story) book/original story where an adult (!) character (preferably the main one) has a stutter and the dialogues are written with that stutter?

TV shows (not too big/longue though) or movies would probably work as well, but for some reason I want some text.

Apologies for the wait.

I noticed you've already checked out the (admittedly limited) books on the website. I do apologise that there are only two so far. I tend to go by what is submitted, and, at this moment, they are the only books with stuttering characters that have been submitted.

However! I have gone away and tried to find some more in line with what you're looking for. You said you're looking for fictional books with adult characters, not children, and from the notes, you generally avoid "angsty slowburns". You also said Stephen King's It, and his books in general, aren't for you.

WIth all that in mind, I've done my best to put together a list of things you may find useful and/or interesting:

This list of books on Goodreads lists 74 books that feature characters who stutter. You said what genres you didn't want, and after flicking through the list there are some that fall into those categories, but if there are any on the list that do catch your eye and you would like more information on (content warnings, available formats etc.) I'll be happy to look into them for you.

This list from The Stuttering Foundation. It is quite long, and a lot of the books here do seem to be non-fiction. However! There are some fictional books sprinkled in there and the list is divided into five categories: children, adult, professional, Spanish and French.

Not an adult necessarily but rather a fox in a comic; Franky Banky comics follow the titular fox (Franky) on his adventures with his friends, while he navigates his stutter. The comics are written by Daniele Rossi, who grew up with a stutter.

Free Stuttering Books is an online collection of free ebooks relating to stuttering. This list isn't exactly what you're looking for, as I think the books are non-fiction, but if you're ever in market for non-fiction books it could be of interest.

Regarding the stutter being written into the dialogue, I cannot say for certain if that is the case for all the books but it is for the Franky Banky comics. I can try to look into how the stuttering is written in any books that interest you, though!

Visited a market yesterday with some friends, and got really excited when I noticed a bunch of the books on the website being sold by this cute little queer indie bookstore.

The couple who run it were so sweet and probably almost as excited as I was going around and looking at all the books they had. They had more (Cemetery Boys, The No Girlfriend Rule, lots of books by Laura Kate Dale etc.) but unfortunately I don't have the funds and/or ability to carry them all! 😅 [grinning face with water drop emoji]

They also gave me some good recommendations for their favourite disability books to add to the archive, which I really appreciated!

Honestly, I really liked it there and I'm probably going to go back when I have a free day (in the distant future). But I was checking out their website, and you can order books to pick up or deliver (including preordering Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao). I really like that you can search by LGBTQ+ rep on the online store!

Hi everyone

There's been a slight change of plans since my last update that I need to address. Last time, I said I was working on implementing a delayed queue system due to possibly starting a new job in the New Year and did not want either commitment to clash. And while this is still the case, it looks like things are going to have to move much quicker than I expected.

I am going to spend the weekend queueing up as many things and churning out as many entries as I can, but don't be surprised if the archive suddenly goes quiet for a couple of days while I'm adjusting to my new schedule.
