MAGA FAQ # 2: Being Trans is a mental illness. A Discussion of how this statement is a logical fallacy.
Overtime many conditions have been better incorporated, better understood, or depathologize. Long ago many things were not as easy to explain. So they went on what they did know. This included conditions like neurosyphilis, thyroid disorders, Lyme disease,brain tumors, and epilepsy. These at certain points were mistakenly called mental illnesses.
Even being a woman was pathologized. They called it Hysteria or wondering womb syndrome. They did this to discredit how women felt about being mistreated. We now know that that this cruel along with medical discrimination.
But certain groups for some reason believe we should stay in the past. Throw out all the research we have done and pathologize people who don't have anything wrong with them. Other than being born a certain away.
The Library of medicine and the DSM-5 has depathogized trans people for a while. Through research they have found that a transgender person’s brain structure and connectivity often align more closely with their experienced gender than their sex assigned at birth.
Researcher at several institutions including Duke studied the structure of the brain. Finding it had physical structures that made it similar to the opposite sex. This suggest that phenotyping can extend to the human brain. A few researchers even called it a form of brain Intersex.
For those who did not understand this at all. Scientist found out that trans women have girl brain parts and the same for trans men. They have boy parts to their brain. Trans peps, non binary folk, and Intersex individuals are scientific marvels that society mistreats. Their research has helped humans better understand human sexuality, biology, and gender.
I know some person out there will say that if it is in their brain it is a mental illness and that gender dyphoria is in the dsm-5. Let's start with the brain thing. A condition can be cased by your brain without it being a mental illness.
An example is Parkinson's disease.
Parkinson's disease is a progressive brain disorder, specifically a neurodegenerative disease, caused by the slow breakdown and death of brain cells. This is a brain disease that is not considered a mental condition.
Next let's explain why Gender Dysphoria is in the DSM-5 and why it is a symptom of being trans not the condition itself. In the old DSM-4 Gender dyphoria was once called gender identity disorder. Because they did not know at the time why people identified this way.
But when they discovered that there is a physical reason as to why they identify this way they updated the condition text to better suit the reality of the person. The name of the condition was then changed to gender dyphoria.
Gender Dyphoria is a type of depression and Anxiety that comes when your gender identity does not align with your body. This makes it a sympton of a condition. Not the condition itself. This is more common in trans people. However this can happen in cisgender and non-binary individuals.
An example of this is the Dr. Money research. He wanted to prove if you raise a child to be a certain gender they will become that gender. However his research proved the opposite. That your gender cannot be changed just because someone pressures you into it.
The young man in his experiment was Cisgender but they kept telling him he is a girl. This made him distressed. Eventually as an adult he went back to the gender his brain had said he was. Though sadly the young man ended his life due to all the torture he went through.
This is also why we need to support trans individuals. Trans people have a 70% reduced suicide rate when being supported and getting treatment. Gender Affirming care and gender affirming surgeries hava a lower disapproval rating than cosmetic surgeries and tattoos.
Last I want to say that to get a procedure done in the states you need to be 18. This has been the rule. But conservative law makers have been spreading the lie that they do this to kids. Kids get therapy, social transtioning, puberty blockers, and then hormone therapy when they are older. You need to be an adult and always have needed to be an adult.
