In light of the current spam bot epidemic, itâs so refreshing to get a follow and see itâs from someone with a normal, trustworthy name, like âpikachus-third-nippleâ
Til it costs $32,093 to have a normal vaginal birth in the United States, and $50,000 for a cesarian. Not to mention $40 to hold your newborn after birth, $10 a day to use the telephone, $25 for an extra pillow. đĽş

These costs all vary by hospital, and theyâre all massively inflated. Theyâre part of complex negotiations between the hospital and the insurance company, and theyâre a scam.
The hospital puts all these little charges together to âjustifyâ a giant bill. Then they âlowerâ those costs to what theyâve already agreed on with your insurance company. The insurance company then tells you âlook how much we reduced your bill by our negotiating!â and then pays some portion of that bill and passes the rest on to you, depending on your deductibles and so on.
If you have no insurance, you donât get the benefit of the ânegotiatedâ price - they keep the price that high as part of a deal with insurance companies who are trying to justify why you should pay them so much in premiums every month. If out of pocket patients paid less, nobody would get insurance.
We need price transparency where hospitals have to publish these costs and make them available to everyone. We need to be able to call people out when they charge $20 for a tissue and $30 for a band-aid. We also need to be able to compare prices and choose hospitals that give us the best balance of cost and quality.Â
We also need to stop acting like giving everyone health insurance is the solution to our broken healthcare system. The insurance companies are the ones who broke it.Â
If you are facing a big bill after a hospital stay, whether for giving birth or for anything else, here are some ways to reduce that bill.
1. If you have insurance, call them and ask for an explanation of what they didnât cover. The person will probably not have one for you. Say you are not willing to pay a bill if they canât explain why you owe it. The insurance company will sometimes re-submit the claim and cover more of your cost.Â
2. Call the hospital billing department and ask for an itemized bill. This alone may reduce the cost somewhat because they were overcharging you to begin with.Â
3. When you get the itemized bill, go through it. Highlight any items that seem exceptionally overpriced or even that donât apply to your visit (a medication you didnât receive, a procedure that wasnât done, etc.)
4. Call the hospital billing department back and go through the itemized bill, asking for clarification on all the items you flagged. They may remove items or reduce the cost.
5. Explain that you are unable to pay your bill in full and ask about a settlement or payment options. Sometimes the hospital will be willing to take a significantly lower amount if you can pay all at once, or you can get a payment plan with no interest that is feasible for you.Â
This is based on how my husband has been fighting medical bills for the last couple of years. He has a chronic illness and has frequent appointments, procedures, tests, etc. He frequently gets large bills and then negotiates them down to much smaller ones, or in some cases has gotten bills dismissed completely.Â
He says that calling the billing department and the insurance company and simply asking them to explain the charges makes a huge difference every time, because the person on the phone almost never has an explanation for why the bill is so high.Â
You ARE being overcharged, and you donât have to just deal with it. You can fight back!
this,,, thank you this is going to be so fucking helpful
Iâm gonna give you something actionable.

Thatâs immense for someone who has few emotional resources to deal with red tape. Like sick, disabled, or neurodivergent people, new parents, caretakers, etc.
If you are a social worker, add this resource to your resource list IMMEDIATELY. That little sheaf of endlessly copied phone numbers, mostly out of date, could use some updating, donât you think?
This shit saves lives. Suicide rates are EIGHT TIMES HIGHER for people in debt. For Godâs sake, raise a light to maybe help ease the burden.

This hack will save your teeth: there are no ârightâ and âwrongâ times to brush your teeth.
It gets in your head that you brush after eating when you wake up and when you go to sleep. Yeah thatâs all well and good, but those are times that donât have a lot of motivation and controlâŚSo justâŚbrush your teeth at a different time.Â
You go to the bathroom in the middle of the day and are like âI should brush my teethâ DO IT!!!! Donât listen to the other half of that sentence that says âshit but itâs not the right timeâÂ
I donât care if youâre about to eat, or get coffee, or whatever.Â
If you are there and you want toâŚdo it.Â
Honestly this hack will solve most of problems. Just stop assigning meaningless ârightâ and âwrongâ to tasks and start saying âI can pretty much do whatever I want whenever I want and society and its expectations donât really matter to meâ.Â
If thereâs no barrier in the first place you donât have to get over it.Â
huge ADHD hack. if you can get over the âall or nothingâ, moralizing, judging aspect of every action you âshouldâ take, youâll discover you can get more done than you expect.
Iâm a big fan of the 2 PM shower. spend a whole morning feeling lazy and guilty, then just decide to start the day over again, even if it is lunchtime.

After microwave, before noms, add vanilla ice cream.

This recipe got my through my worst year at university. (The reason you add salt is itâs a flavor enhancer. Put in just a little bit, not enough to make it taste salty, and it makes the other ingredients taste better.)

A Bookmark Near the End
He loves history. He wanted to write a biography of John Quincy Adams. I, shamefully, knew almost nothing about John Quincy Adams, so I went online and bought every biography of him I could find. One day, he called me, claiming that we wouldnât work out long term. He said he loved me but that we had different interests. âWhat does love mean to you?â I said. âThatâs an impossible question,â he replied. I, however, find love to be quite simple. Love is the stack of biographies on my nightstand with a bookmark near the end. â Julia Nicole CampÂ

His name is Onur Albayrak! Hereâs the story.
Hurriyet Daily News reports that Albayrak had been hired to photograph the July 5th wedding at Turgut Ăzal Nature Park in the eastern Turkish province of Malatya. On the day of, when he noticed that the bride-to-be didnât look like an adult, he asked the groom her age and learned that she was only 15.
âThe groom had come to my studio some two weeks ago and was alone,â Albayrak tells the Daily News. âI saw the bride for the first time at the wedding. Sheâs a child, and I felt her fear because she was trembling.â
Albayrak then reportedly refused to continue as the wedding photographer and attempted to stop the wedding.
The argument soon turned physical when the groom attacked him as he was attempting to leave, Albayrak says. The photographer ended up breaking the clientâs nose in the fight, according to local reports.
Albayrak confirmed the reports in a Facebook post, which has been met with widespread approval, attracting thousands of Likes and hundreds of overwhelmingly positive comments.
âI wish this had never happened, but it did,â Albayrak writes. âAnd if you were to ask me if Iâd do the same thing again, Iâd say âyes.â Child brides are [victims] of child abuse and no power on earth can make me photograph a child in a wedding gown.â
The legal minimum age for marriage in Turkey is 18-years-old for both sexes, and child marriage is punishable by imprisonment for men who marry underage girls. Despite being outlawed, however, child marriage is still prevalent in the country and remains a controversial political issue.

this guy is a hero.
btw - letâs remind ourselves, americans, that unlike turkey, in the US the legal minimum age for marriage is only 18 in two states. in alabama, you can be married as young as fourteen years old if you have âparental permissionâ. in california, you can get married under 18 if you go to counseling, have a parent with you when you apply for the marriage license, and appear before a judge. in some states, there isnât even a specific minimum age for marriage.
the minimum marriage age for girls in new hampshire is 13 years old.
48 states allow child marriage.
child marriage is not an âover thereâ problem, it happens right here, legally. any one of us might find ourselves called upon to break somebodyâs nose if we encounter something like this occurring. we also have a responsibility to support groups and laws trying to end child marriage in this country.
Florida judges have approved child marriages of children down to age 11.
