Notes from a Dog Rescue in Progress

"… I took some time to think and to let Roo calm down. She reminded me of a time when I was just like her. Alone in the dirt on the floor of a 113-degree jungle on the other side of the world. Dried out, sick with dysentery, unable to move. Certain I was going to die and no ideas better than lying there and giving up. A man in a turban appeared and told me something that unlocked whatever that thing is that we all need help unlocking sometimes. It was the thing that got me out of the dirt and out of the jungle and back to life. 

All the man in the turban said was: “If you proceed with courage, you will arrive without fail.”

I didn’t know how that lesson could apply to a dog, but it helped me then, and it was helping me now. I could only think of one thing to help Roo. Only one thing made any sense. Roo had begun to trust me. It was time to put that trust to work. 

It was time for her to get the idea that if she proceeded with courage, she, too, would arrive without fail."

My dog Orville. He appeared first in the clouds over Kathmandu two years before he was born in Colorado. Then he traveled to Nepal and grew up in the Himalayas. The shot of him in the night clouds over Kathmandu is here, with a comparison shot.

Funny video of impossible to wake Golden puppy. After Roo was confined, starved and frightened for the first eight months of her puppyhood she had a lot of sleep to catch up on. This video was shot right after the best seller about her rescue.
