Kohana Gives Birth to Adan - October 13th 2010

In the wild, killer whales live in complex social groupings, and almost every behavior that they know has been taught/passed down from generation to generation. For example, a mother showing her young daughter how to raise a calf. Kohana was taken from her own mother at the age of 3 1/2, and probably never learned how to properly care for her offspring. You can clearly see she swims by him and shows no interest in helping her newborn baby to the surface to take any of his first breaths. Adan was rejected by his own mother, something that would never happen (by pure choice) to a wild orca calf, and had to be bottle fed and raised by humans. He has never known a mother, and never will. They still reside together, however Kohana plays no maternal role, they do not share a mother-calf bond which is extremely important. This is a risky, unnatural, and just plain cruel outcome of SeaWorld’s captive breeding program - and a perfect example of why it should not be allowed to continue.

The orcas at Loro Parque, Spain, are owned and controlled by SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. Kohana was sent there directly from SeaWorld.

Help Us Save the World’s most Endangered Dolphin

Maui’s dolphin is the world’s smallest and rarest subspecies of dolphin; it is estimated only 55 are left. A subspecies of Hector’s dolphin, and only found on a small stretch of New Zealand’s South Island, their survival is threatened. Living only a few miles off the coast, they are exposed to sand mining, fishing trawl nets, and a wide variety of pollutants and contaminants. 

Their females don’t begin breeding until they’re seven to nine years old and only give birth to one calf every two to four years. Potential population growth is slow and makes their immediate recovery critical.

Stand with organizations like the World Wildlife Fund and urge New Zealand’s Prime Minister, John Key, to protect these precious creatures from extinction!

Petition: Hong Kong Government: Legislate a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin in Hong Kong.

From Honduras to New Caledonia, from the Bahamas to the Maldives, the people have spoken. And governments have listened. Now is the time for Hong Kong to wake up! The public is ready. The business sector is behind us. Now is the time for a total sale and possession ban on shark fin in Hong Kong. By doing so, Hong Kong will take a giant step to join the conservation efforts of numerous countries around the world who have enacted shark protection legislation. In Latin America it will join Honduras. In the United States it will join California, New York, Hawaii, Washington, Maryland, Delaware and Oregon. In the Pacific region it will join Palau, Tokelau, Marshall Islands, French Polynesia, Cook Islands, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and New Caledonia. Even China has agreed to stop serving shark fin soup at official banquets, to take effect in the next year or two.

Banning shark fin from the streets of Hong Kong will be the single most important marine conservation achievement of the year. It will be an important step towards protecting the health of our oceans. It will also remove the stain on Hong Kong’s reputation as a world-class tourism hub.

Here you can see the thick tentacles of Pillar Coral, which forms large underwater columns in the seas of the Caribbean. The complex and unique reproductive process is not well understood, but new research has shed light on this mystery and improved the chances of conserving this coral, and others, for the future.

Two dolphins were found dead following a rave at Connyland. The Swiss marine park had initially been accused of killing Shadow and Chelmers by allowing a deafening two-day rave to be held just a few yards from the dolphins’ pool. Campaigners had warned that the dolphins could be affected by holding the event so close to the pool, yet the authorities went ahead with the rave. Animal activists from ProWal and The Whale and Dolphin Protection Society recorded noise levels of over 100 decibels outside the park, well within earshot of the dolphins. According to Andreas Morlok from Prowal, this is comparable with that of a pneumatic drill on top volume. It has now been suggested that the dolphins may have been drugged and poisoned by ravers.

The official death rate at the Connyland dolphinarium, and its associated travelling dolphin shows is unknown. In the summer of 2000 two calves died soon after birth. Controversy over conditions at Connyland resurfaced after the death of fourteen-year-old Gecko, prompting calls for the park to be closed. Connyland was accused of violations against the Swiss Animal Welfare Act due to strong evidence documenting cruelty to the displayed marine mammals. As of 2003, Connyland had owned at least 36 dolphins, 24 had either been confirmed dead or their fate unknown. In 2010, charges were pressed against Connyland for an alleged serious violation of the Animal Protection Act. That case is still pending. Shadow and Chelmers are the seventh and eight dolphins to die in Connyland in the past three years.

The Connyland dolphinarium in Lipperswil is the only remaining dolphinarium in Switzerland. Please ask for the closure of this dolphinarium!

First opperation of awearness and donation commenced this cold afternoon in downtown yyc! Met some very supportive people and definatly the not so supportive! This is only the beginning of our amazing journey to stop the slaughter in Japan! These people are so awesome for toughing it out in the cold with us today and we are truly greatful!
