Natalia stood beneath the weak light of the dying street lamp, her head tilting slightly as she caught the movement of one of the heavy looking drapes.

She was a vampire herself, and quite the sight to behold. Her wild curls were shocking red, contrasting her pale pallor and emerald green eyes. Most of her clothing was black, the only bright spot was a grey tanktop beneath her leather jacket.

Using her enhanced speed she crossed the deserted street, raising a black leather gloved hand and knocking on the door.

Adam had felt the change in the air. It was subtle, extremely subtle to be noticed by a human or any other creature but he felt it. Another one of them was near. Silent as a cat but with sharp eyes which he could feel through the heavy curtain. He lowered the volume of the music he was playing, one of his latest pieces and just stood in the middle of the room, waiting for the person's next move.

He tensed at the sound of the knock on his door, softened by gloves. And oh, he didn't even have to bother pulling the curtain to find out who was there. He descended the stairs carrying a candle not bothering to open the lights like he would do for Ian or Eve. This was more than enough for her. For them.

He pulled the door open and gazed at her almost scrutinising her but almost. There was nothing about her that wasn't perfect, from the way she held herself with the grace of a ballerina to the way she was dressed, to the way her hair were elegantly curled and her face was illuminated by the candlelight. He didn't speak first, waiting to see whether she would ask to come inside this time or she would attempt to persuade him to around for a drive with her.

Natalia's eyes glowed softly in the darkness, her glowed hand gently holding him as the blackness of night enveloped them. She led him to her car, gently placing a few things in the backseat to make more room for him.

"Always had such a gifted mind, music, art, and science. Everyone else always seemed to pale in comparison to you."

"No, it's not strange. The particles you lost might be found by someone else and bring them the joy they are missing. I think it's a comforting thought, that we don't actually lose our particles, but we have no longer need of them and someone else does."

He held her hand and let her guide him to her cherry red car, something that he always found quite endearing for some reason he couldn't understand. He liked how vibrant everything about her was, from her eyes and red hair to her car. She was colourful and lively while he preferred the comforting darkness of black and the dullness of grey.

"You know that's not true. There used to be men and women far more brilliant than me, I happened to be lucky enough to learn from them."

Natalia's words were soft, genuine and honest. It had been some time since she felt like herself, and she hoped that Adam would understand. It seemed to be harder and harder to find beautiful things in the world, when everything was so ugly and poisonous. It almost made her feel out of place, as if she had lived so long and yet the world no longer had a place for her.

"Thank you Adam, I really do appreciate the welcome. Come on, we can go lament under the stars."

It wasn’t unusual for Stephanie to get calls from concerned citizens. Little old people who were convinced their neighbour was an alien or a werewolf or something.

Vampire was new though. But it was in the job description to help people so she created a portal to the neighbourhood and walked up to the seemingly ordinary apartment.

She knocked on the door, and stuck her hands in her pockets.

He checked the time and the day, on his phone and for any missed calls from Ian but he found none which made no sense because if it wasn't Ian knocking on his door, then who was it? Apart from Ian he didn't have any other visitors. Eve was far away happily living in Tangier among her books and music. And as for his neighbours, well he would rather not interact with the zombies.

He peaked from behind the heavy curtains blocking the windows for a moment forgetting that he was no longer living in an isolated place where cars were a rare sight. The street was filled with them. He sighed and rolled his eyes at himself and the pedestrians walking around then moved to the door. The sight waiting for him was unfamiliar. A young woman was standing there. Thankfully not Ava. He was curious as he was agitated by the prospect of new neighbours and small talk. He sighed though as Eve's words came back to him when they had parted, telling him to not isolate himself and try to enjoy the things the world had to offer. He had scoffed then and he scoffed again now but opened the door.

"How can I help you?" He questioned in his neutral tone, watching the woman with a disinterested expression.

“Five minutes?” Stephanie asks looking over at the older woman peeking through her curtains at her.

“Mum is looking right at me. I never can tell what she’ll remember.”

He lead her inside the apartment. It was mostly dark but the living room was lit by a lamp with warm light. It was cluttered with sheets of music laying around, old records and a few new ones and books. A lot of books.

"Make yourself comfortable."

“Thank you.” She replies with a slight smile. She takes a seat on a semi clear chair, hands on her lap.

He was clearly less than enthused. But anyone would be in this situation. And he could have poor circulation. Not exactly conclusive vampire evidence.

“You collect records?” Steph breaks the silence. “Earth, Wind and Fire. This is my favourite of their albums.” She smiles.

“Are you a composer?” She asks, taking note of the strewn sheet music.

This would be a lot faster if she could just look in his fridge but somehow she figured he wouldn’t take too kindly to that.

Adam stood by the entrance of the living room, his arms crossed on his chest and watched her in disdain, less than enthused would certainly not cut it.

He didn't like having people in his personal spaces, especially people he didn't know and this one had an unsettling aura about her.

"You could say that." He replied and tilted his head to the side, the suspicion still not leaving his gaze. He regarded her as she searched the cluttered room with her eyes.

"So what is this really about? You keep searching for something and I'm pretty sure it's not to see whether or not I have your favourite albums."

“Okay fine you caught me. I guess there’s a reason I never did well in drama class.” She sighs.

“My name is Stephanie strange. And the little old lady down the hall did ask me to check in on you. The thing is. She’s convinced you’re a vampire. And frankly I’m not unconvinced. So all I really want to know is if you’re a danger to the people here. Where are you getting your blood?”

She stands and crosses her arms. Still looking pretty nonthreatening dispute what she just admitted.

“If you need help finding blood so you don’t have to harm people I can do that. But what I can’t do is leave you to your own devices.”

"How dare you accuse me of drinking humans? I'm not some predator lurking around in dark alleys and corners ready to attack people's throats! Or you think that vampires have some some sort of power to hypnotise like the stories say?"

“Oh please, spare me. You’re far too pretty to be human and I know you want me out of your hair. So let me look in your fridge if you have nothing to hide.”

"You are however correct on your assumptions of me being a vampire. Or well, the little lady who loves to stare at me from behind the peep hole is correct. But I don't eat those zombies. I don't lurk in the dark, waiting to attack them, no. God knows that I wouldn't trust just anyone."

"They think themselves to be untouchable, creatures strengthened by their very advancements that poison them and lead them to their slow deaths. Their lives are already so shirt compared to ours- passing in the blink of an eye... but now as they poison themselves, the starve us."

She leaned against the doorway, loosely crossing her arms. These days she felt like she was drowning in a sea- a sea of time and memories... a sea of pain and loneliness. Maybe that's what drew her here to Adam in the first place. To have someone who understood, so she didn't have to be alone for awhile.

"I wasn't sure you would appreciate the company, but I had a feeling that if I felt this way you did too."

"We all think ourselves untouchable, indestructible, immortal. It's what drives most people even though it's an illusion. A pretty one undoubtedly but it's a fake. We can all be hurt, killed, undone and tore apart from the inside. I'd say that is the most painful one, whether it is physical or mental. Knowing that something inside you is giving up, it can be an organ, it can be your soul or even worse your mind. You can't really heal any of these even if the humans with their clever ways think that they can. Replacing something does not heal the wound, it just fills it up with something that doesn't really belong to you even if it resides inside you. Or on you."

He almost smiled at her words, even if he pretended to think otherwise, she knew him well. But she didn't understand that the feeling of drowning, of disappointment and dissatisfaction was constant. Eve scolded him in her gentle and loving way, telling him to go out, to attempt to survive things and let himself be lost in the flood of music and books, the changes upon the world and to let his kindness be his guide. It was easier said than done. Words were beautiful, while the world not so much. And the humans were even worse, they destroyed everything beautiful and full of life, they killed an imprisoned those with brilliant minds and ideas which were different than their owns and took natural rights away. They were the ones that didn't get it. Not him.
