She would be really pretty if she had nice skin.
What my dad said to my relatives after I went to bed. (via sanwichsays)
I almost don’t want to add to this because its so powerful on its own, but this just really struck a chord with me. This is basically my family’s mantra since I began withdrawing. Like too many other young girls, I’ve been conditioned to equate my outer appearance with my self-worth. My academic performance was always important, but not as important. My parents and relatives were not impressed by any of my achievements, as these were just expected of me. What really set me aside from my cousins was the fact that I was “pretty” too. As a testament to how fucked up my family is, I literally made bank at family parties just for looking nice. Relatives would half-heartedly ask me how school was and then move on to the important matters - “Do you have a boypren?” “You are such a lady now, so beautiful!” I’d receive anywhere from $50-$200 to “buy something pretty to wear.” If I didn’t show up in a cute outfit or if my rashes were visible, I simply wouldn’t get as much money. I remember accepting their generous gifts. I remember going to the mall and diligently shopping, trying on clothes and makeup and shoes. I remember slathering on the steroids to make my rashes go away.
Fast forward to here and now, after all that TSW has done to me both physically and mentally. I avoid those family parties now because I’m ashamed - I’m no longer pretty so what’s the point? When I do muster up the courage to go, I’m not celebrated like I used to be. Instead of money, I receive concerned looks and unsolicited skincare advice. They try to be sympathetic, encouraging even, saying, “It’s such a shame that this happened to you, sweetheart. You will be pretty again soon, don’t worry!” And in one fell swoop, I’m reduced to the state of my skin, my years of suffering nothing but a momentary lapse in prettiness.
(via tswjourney)
TOO TRUE.
I am 90% healed, and I am incredibly happy about that. As soon as I was 50% healed I was already happy about that. It showed so much in my face and arms. I remember when it was the worst, and I would get that look from strangers, but also family and friends. I was ashamed, and I did not want to show my face anywhere. I fell into a depression and had no desire to see anyone. I didn’t want to do anything.
I remember these words spoken to me by someone I loved too: “You’re pretty again.” Though, I was ecstatic about the state of my skin and healing... I couldn’t help but also think Well, damn... is my being pretty just how I look on the outside? Fuck.
I know the intentions behind those words were not evil, but it speaks volumes of how our world or society works. I always hated how media portrayed beauty a certain way, and it is unfortunate that so many of us strive to get to those ideals. Fuck that. The prettiest thing about my skin was the ability it had to heal, and the journey that you go through. Seriously tho.

Just watching this makes me teary eyed.
The months between April and September have been trying months for me on so many levels. This eczema journey took the best of me in many ways, but I learned so much more than I have in the 30 years I've had this stupid chronic condition. This is only my face/neck areas, but those were the ones that fucked with my mind and self esteem the most. We all go through our own shit, and this was mine for a while. And you get through it, and it will be OK.
Fuck Big Pharma
I felt it coming over me again… My eyes rolled back as a rush of sunshine gushed up my spine and splashed over my brain. The deeper I dug my nails, the
DAY 94
My face, neck, and chest area have made amazing improvements. I thought I'd never get my smooth skin back. I have discolored splotches here and there, but I'm not stressin' too much on that. I have an annoying problem spot on my left arm. It gets so itchy, and I scratch and bleed and it stings and I regret it each time. My arms seem the worst, but then I look at my tummy, and it kind of sucks a lot too. My legs look so much better from my last update. The redness is less, and it doesn't sting as much. Maybe I can wear shorts and dresses again soon.
I've reached a good place with my Naturopath. I am seeing her in 2 weeks instead of 1. I'm stoked! Also, I have to note that my mental state is at a much better place. I felt like shit 2 months ago, and even though I am going through some other shit unrelated to my skin, I feel like I am handling things better. I just get excited for all the improvements that I will make.
To all the people suffering through the same thing, keep your head up and do whatever it takes to get better. We become so strong from such a hellish journey.

DAY 82
I had a good run where the rashes did not affect my legs. But here they are now. It’s so ugly. I hate taking off my pants to see this mess now. I hate showers so much cause it stings a bit. But I can’t stand a day without taking a shower to at least wash away germs/bacteria/gross stuff. I’m definitely not wearing shorts/skirts/dresses for a while. Sucks cause it is summer..
My face is so much better today though. I have some itchy spots, and I get paranoid that I’ll scratch enough to have the red rash come through and have a splotchy red face again. I feel the smoothness on my face though, and it makes me happy. My skin color is coming back. Slight dark red going on, but so much better. So all of that is great.
My arms have cycled through a swollen and oozy phase. Also tight, and super dry. I hate the tops of my hands, and I would hide my hands if I could. I mostly wear long sleeves, but sometimes I don’t wanna give a fuck and I’ll wear sleeveless shirts so my arms can breathe.
My tummy has one large brownish rash. My back has the small red bumps. And even my butt area has them too.
I’m really grossed out with the look of my body right now. I hate looking at the mirrors, and I try not to... but I also want to see if there are any improvements. Just trying to push through it all. I know it will get better.
DAY 74
All of this has been hell. I am getting better though. I see small differences everyday, every week, sometimes even within a few hours.
My face is less red, and spots of my normal skin seem to be peaking out. Yay! My arms though, are a flaky fucking mess with some remnants of scratch attacks during the night. I wear socks on my hands at night to prevent the scratch, but even sometimes it does not block enough. You can see the folds on my hands too, from the thickening of my skin and probably liquid floating around under still. I’m also back to the no sleep nights. I get about 3 hours of sleep maybe? 4, if I’m lucky. Will need to fix that, as I know sleep heals the body the most.. Other than the pictures shown, I actually have probably 75% of my body covered in rashes. My legs began to show small red spots that shortly spread. The redness isn’t as bad, so I guess that is good. The itch is the most maddening thing. Once you start, you cannot stop. It is so hard.
I was also at a bar on Sunday afternoon. I eyeballed the Whiskey so hard, and I wanted to cave. I imagine that I will test it out soon... Body, please be good to me.
Anyway, end bitchin’ rant session. Day 74... I can’t believe I’m here.
DAY 69
The transformation of my skin over the course of just a few days is insane. I want to say that my naturopath has greatly helped me in this journey. I highly suggest going to see one. I had read so much blogs and peoples stories, and read about naturopaths here and there. I think it is very important to do your research and find someone who can truly help you. I personally did a search on Yelp to find one closest to me, and had experience with skin issues. I read about Nutritional Response Testing, and thought what the hell... I will try anything at this point. My naturopath did that on me, and although I was very skeptical on it, I went with it and trusted the process. It has been a month with my naturopath, and I saw progress each week. I saw her weekly, and she tested for more nutrients to feed my body while I go through the detox process.
Just a few days ago, I was more red and my skin was super tight. Today, my skin feels more pliable though flakey. I can actually see the regular color of my skin come out in tiny spots within the sea of darkish red. I am feeling so much better than I did the past 2 months. I had been a mess physically and emotionally.
I am so surprised how fast my skin is healing. I hope it’s only up from here.
I think I do an OK job being positive, and keeping my head up. But there are definitely times where I am at a loss and find myself super sad and out of hope.
I am blessed to have such great people around me to help me cope with this shitty thing I’m dealing with. I don’t know how many times I’ve bitched and complained and cried and be angry about this time to all of them. And I cannot thank them enough for dealing with my storm of emotions lately.
Onward. Always.
Day 61
Still a bit of redness, but not nearly as bad as last week. I feel like it is a fading purple/pink right now. And I am flakey AF! I try to gently remove the flakes without aggravating my skin and going into an itch attack. Snake phase.
Not pictured are my legs. I started having red bumps on my thighs. My rash on my left calf also got red and had a bit of oozing. I also noticed that my left ankle started swelling a bit. I was confused cause there is no rash on that ankle, but perhaps it is liquid stuck under the skin traveling down there and just getting stuck. I kept it elevated when I slept, and even now as I sit at my desk. Not as bad now, so that’s good.
I see my naturopath weekly. I have to admit, the first 2-3 weeks were terrible. I felt like crap, and my skin seemed to get worse. Must be the die off and toxin release. Last week, I did not get one night of complete rest. I woke up every 3-4 hours, or woke up super early and had no way of falling asleep. I saw her again on Monday, and she gave me a few more supplements to help with the resting/healing period of my body. And since then, I am very happy to say that I have gotten straight uninterrupted sleep! It’s amazing how much you appreciate these after not having them for a bit. She also is having me slow down my detox to make it a little more comfortable for me.
Overall, feeling way better than last week. So yay for that...
Day 54
The latest and greatest of fun healing crisis symptoms: - swelling/edema - red skin - itchy bumpy skin - itchiness (the worst in the middle of the night) - chills - really terrible insomnia - high temperature
I had a terrible itch attack on the way to work this morning. I felt like I couldn’t stop. It was maddening. I stopped at Sprouts to get a probiotic. I was using Bio-k for a bit, but stopped cause I forgot to get more. I remember that I was not as itchy when I was taking it, so I thought it would help now. I picked up Ultimate Flora critical care probiotic. I took it immediately upon arriving to work. The relief I got was instantaneous. I could not believe it. The maddening itch subsided, and my swelling went down a bit. Sometimes I am hesitant to say what does or doesn’t work, but I am pretty convinced that this probiotic helped me immensely. I will continue it now, and hope for the best.
Day 41
The state of my arms right now sucks... But I have to say, it is way better than the swelling, the burning and weeping wounds. It’s a gamble every night; don’t know whether I scratch the fuck out of my arms or not. This morning, I discovered a whole lot of scratching on my right arm.
My face is a lot better. It’s not in the red stage anymore. Sometimes it rides that line though, and I find some sore pink-ish spots, but it’s probably my fault from touching my face a whole damn lot. It’s really hard not to. Especially if it is in a crazy peeling stage.
As you can see, my neck is just filling with rashes. That big spot on my right clavicle has been a stubborn patch that’s been lingering around. I also have a spot on my tummy and patches on my left calf, not pictured.
Latest treatments: baths, rest, and continuing a healthy diet. Nothing special. I’ve also discovered tubifast bandages. That’s what I’ve been putting on my arms and calf to minimize the rubbing between my clothes and skin. It helps a little.
Day by day... as always.

When you think it's over...
My rashes on my face and arms seemed like they were calming down after a few days. Ok, they were. But then today I felt an itch, and now I think there's another rash attack on the horizon. Sigh... Took an hour long bath with oatmeal, tea tree oil, and Epsom salts. Felt nice. But an hour later, I feel the tingles in my left arm rash.... Just waiting for it now... Sighs forever....
