"Conjuring Mapplethorpe" #ExplorePhotography Day 5 For the last installment of the #BlackandWhite5DayChallenge I wanted to do something special. In preparing for the final submission, I have been conjuring Robert Mapplethorpe whose portraits of flowers have been with me since I first saw them decades ago. I also didn’t want to go overboard with the project either; no special equipment, no insane locations. Each photograph in this series is something that any one or our students could recreate. For this homage, I bought the best looking orchid in the flower shop. I waited until nightfall and until my home was dark. The tripod was setup and the camera mounted. I used a flashlight to paint the orchid. A long exposure (20-seconds) gave me enough time to paint in the details that I wanted; shadow did the rest. It was a real pleasure to create and the excitement keep me up all night. Now that I have completed the #BlackandWhiteChallenge, I would like to individually nominate my talented girlfriend and pet photographer Ariane Delafosse, my good friend Jon Freeman.
