MEPs take part in an NGO-organised action this morning which unveiled an enormous 100 metre-long list showing the names of the 17306 people who died between 1990 and 2012 trying to enter Europe. This list was completed with painted handprints to symbolise the over 6000 people who have died since 2013, and in particular the over 1700 deaths since the beginning of 2015.
How many foreigners are there really in your country?
In many European countries, political parties are using fear of foreigners to gain votes.
The number of foreigners residing in various European countries are often a topic of intense debate, for example in the UK where UKIP have argued that too many foreigners have been let into the country - both from other EU-countries and other nations.
However, if you look at the map here, made by Eurostat, the actual numbers of foreigners in the UK are not that different from other Western European countries - and actually somewhat lower than many of its neighbours.
For the purposes of this infographic “Foreign citizens refer to persons who are not citizens of the country in which they reside. They also include stateless persons.”

With figures above from 2012, it would be interesting to compare to today’s map and data alongside media coverage.
This year’s International Youth Day is a good time to remind us of the suffering many young lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people face daily. FRA research has revealed high levels of discrimination and violence towards young LGBTI people, underlining the need for targeted responses to put a halt to the fear and isolation many endure.
Youth Unemployment in Europe
Perhaps the biggest issue facing Europe, Youth Unemployment is a result of a number of factors and was heightened by the Eurocrisis and the Greek Crisis.
Here is an infographic showing the Youth Unemployment rates in all European Union countries, as well as the EU average.

From work permits to healthcare, pensions to tax, EU citizens in UK and Britons in Europe worry they could be in a precarious position after 2016’s referendum
This Thursday, 20 August, Polish workers in London will go on a one-day strike, to protest against the lack of appreciation for their huge input into this country’s economy. We want to show that without the input and work ethic of the UK’s Polish community this country, or at least London, could grind to a halt within three hours. We are also going on strike to protest against the rise of anti-Polish rhetoric in the media over the past few years, in particular as espoused by Ukip leader Nigel Farage and the political crowd-pleasers who ape his views, among whom I count first and foremost David Cameron.
YES! Finally.

‘Instead what has happened is that the European Union has been stripped back to its essence as a neoliberal economic project. Gone are the pretences of internationalism or a social element – the Greek crisis has demonstrated that bonds of solidarity stretch only as far as is profitable.’
Europeans Against the European Union: an interesting read of a young person’s perspective as an EU citizen in the wake of the Greek economic crisis, and the wider continental effect.

Latvia 2 euro commemorative coin “Cow”, year 2016.
With such bad euro news of late, let’s focus on how Latvia will be celebrating its famous ‘blue’ cows on their €2 coins in 2016. Hard to see they are blue in coin form but who cares...
The eurozone is close to Grexit because of deep structural flaws and incompatible national views. On Sunday its leaders will need all their courage to overcome these obstacles
