The way that I have been craving to draw more Clive, man... Also not Torgal being the prettiest boi in town! 🥹

I lost the post but someone said "you know you don't have to be useful to be worthy of love, right?" and it's so painfully Clive coded.

He's convinced the only way for him to be tolerated at the very least is to be useful. It applies to everyone in his life and even himself. All because his heartless mother robbed him of her love when he was still so young just because he wasn't the dominant of the Phoenix and therefore was deemed useless. And it's reinforced to him when his fellow shields of Rosaria, by his own admission, only accept him because he's good with a sword.

And that's why I viscerally hate Cid telling him "seeing as you're still breathing, you might as well make yourself useful" when he's suicidal and begging to be killed.

And that's why I hate that in her main declaration of love, Jill tells him that she loves him because he's always saved her and he always will.

And that's why I love his relationship with Torgal so much, because Torgal doesn't care about Clive being useful in any way, he just loves him deeply.

Clive is so unbearably easy to love and he would be even if he sat on his ass all day and wasn't "useful".

fandom really fixates way too much on clive's softer side tbh, particularly for the angst. like yes he's kind and considerate and selfless to a fault and struggles to find value in his own life because he has been used/has used himself as a tool for so long to the point where it defines his self-image and went through absolute horrors but like

this is also the same guy who looked hugo kupka in the face, said "i'll kill you" and then proceeded to cut both the guy's hands off without hesitation. he didn't go for the kill to end the fight immediately, man said i am going to maximize your pain first before i cut your head off because fuck you, suffer

imo clive's capacity and willingness to use violence is just as important, especially because of the contrast it paints to his softer side, and i wish this got acknowledged more in fan works
