Like the iconic poster for Cronenberg’s film, and even the practice of watching a movie in a darkened room, Oursler’s exhibitions and installations pull the microcosm of the individual mind into a deep and scary macrocosm of humanity.

Translucent bags of sand, plants, and rice hang like orbs from museum ceilings, melding the “organic and manmade, the natural, spiritual and social worlds,” writes Neto. We cannot close our eyes and touch a painting in the MoMA, but with installations like Neto’s we can feel the beads between our fingers and the threads beneath our feet. Neto has commented that he wants his work to be a body, to be something living.

Brooklyn-based artist Christian Rex Van Minnen does not distance himself from swollen, curled or incomplete artistic representations of the body. His pieces present Dali-esque visions of the human body, manipulated in ways that contort the very essence of what it means to be a human soul within a rational fleshy body.

MULLER VAN SEVEREN: It’s the fine line between art and furniture that makes it so interesting for us. We are artists who create functional objects, so for us the link is easily made. What it comes down to is that people can see the art of an object when it’s not in use.

“I originally started drawing as a coping mechanism, it has certainly grown and evolved into a way for me to communicate emotions and feelings that are probably impossible to express verbally. Especially with my struggles with mental illness, it becomes harder and harder to clearly and confidently express how I feel, and to even organize my own emotions into coherent thought. So my art is like an extension of my brain, I guess. It’s just what’s going on in my mind shaped into illustrations.”
