“Come now, Coulson, you know my name,” he mocked, pulling his hood down. Loki just smirked at him. “Surprise.”
Instead of a look of shock, a satisfied grin spread across the former agent’ face. “I was right. You’ve come back again… to lead the Brotherhood or just to observe? We were so excited when you came back last time… before we knew about the Chithari.”
“You already have a leader,” Loki said simply. But his smirk turned to a scowl as he let Coulson go. “But William’s done a rather poor job. I was wrong to entrust the Brotherhood to him.”
Phil rubbed at the spots where he just knew he was going to get bruises. “William is arrogant. Skilled, but he won’t listen to anyone once he’s made his mind up. I would have been dead if it weren’t for a few people disobeying orders to get me out of SHIELD.”
“I would have words with him then…” Loki muttered. “That does raise an interesting question… How did you survive?”
“Magic,” Phil deadpanned with a slightly raised eyebrow. “Medically speaking, I died twice before they could stabalize me.”
“Amazing.” Loki chuckled dryly. “And these few who got you out of SHIELD? Why, by the way? What went wrong?”
“Besides the gaping hole in my chest? Fury used my death to convince the Avengers to get their asses into gear and play nice. No one besides the surgeons working on me were supposed to know I was alive. Our Mentor decided that there was no use in trying to reclaim my body.” Phil resisted the urge to roll his eyes as he continued, “Even after receiving word of my survival, Miles actually sent out an order to have me killed for all the information that I may or may not have given SHIELD while drugged with medications. Thankfully, the assassins I had set up as SHIELD agents decided to risk showing our hand to get me out. The reopened wound and the slight infection I received was more than worth it.”
“If you’re expecting an apology for that, by the way, don’t hold you breath,” Loki started firmly. “Miles should have known better, unless your not getting the training you need…” That’s when an idea came to him. “Or he does know something that we don’t…. I have to find William. Where is he?”
“Wasn’t asking for one,” he shrugged. “Last I was told, William was searching for his son. The Templars got a hold of him for something called an ‘Animus’. Apparently they can access Assassin secrets with the thing despite the fact that Desmond ran away before he even started training. I’m afraid I don’t have all the details.”
"They have the Animus? Damn it..." Loki's brain was running a mile a minute now, trying to figure out something. "This is most troubling.... No doubt they've already found what they needed. To put it bluntly, we're fucked."
