What’s happening in New Zealand is a really interesting use of democracy. While flags are often collaborative efforts, they are rarely voted on. Some are questioning the 26 million dollar price tag attached to this process, while others are becoming extremely involved in campaigning for the flags they love best.  I wonder if this will set a standard moving forward.

Kerry calls for democracy in Cuba as U.S. flag raised

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called for an end to "mutual isolation" and issued an impassioned plea for democracy in Cuba as the American flag was raised outside the recently reopened U.S. Embassy here Friday for the first time in 54 years.

This is a recent custom job we worked on, a subdued Canadian flag. While this is normall reserved for small emblems, the colouring allows members of the military to present their national identity without compromising the utility of their camouflage.

Decoding Sherman's flag and conserving a historic treasure

In our textile conservation lab, the final pieces of a million piece jigsaw puzzle have just been put into place. The "puzzle" in question is a 135-year-old silk flag commissioned by General William T. Sherman, of Civil War fame, that had deteriorated into thousands of fragments. Textile conservator Suzanne Thomassen-Krauss and her intern Kayla Silvia were up to the challenge.

More flags in front of city hall

Timmins city hall has a new look in the form of new flag poles. Two new poles went up this past week adding to the previous poles, which stood on either side of the city hall front steps.

Flag presentation can be confusing at times...we’re currently at work putting together an infographic to clear up some issues.  This format is technically correct, as the most significant flag is supposed to be presented to the far left (from the viewer’s perspective). However, there is also precedent for the Canadian flag to be in the location closest to an entrance.

The Honda Celebration: A Flag Shop ‘Tail’

This year the Honda Celebration of Light is turning 25 and as seasoned Vancouverites know, some of the best viewing is from one of the city’s downtown bridges. Every year our client brand.LIVE, the event organizer, works with us at the Flag Shop to deck out the Granville Street bridge end to end with Celebration of Light street banners.

Something that The Flag Shop has been able to do to help reduce costs, and more importantly waste, for the event has been to help brand.LIVE and Celebration of Light re-use their street banners year after year.

Printed on 200 denier Dacron, the banners last far longer than the month or so that they are on display. Following the event, we give the banners a good cleaning and then store them safely for the next year. Then, to keep them current and informative, new tails are produced every year with the event dates listed and replaced on the bottom of the banners. This allows brand.LIVE to reuse the banners but lose none of their informative value.

Now that’s a bright idea!
