Hey guys. Iām glad to be finally posting my āmental breakdown survival guideā. As you know I struggle a lot with mental health, and so I have been through a lot of breakdowns. So many that I actually dropped out of university after 3 weeks in 2016 and had to take the whole year off. Because of this, Iāve made it my mission to help others with mental health issues as much as I can, so you donāt have to go through what Iāve been through.
Anyway, here is my guide. I tried to keep it general, and actually useful. If you have any questions or additions please feel free to add them.
And as ever, if you want to talk to me about studying with mental illness or want to see a post on a specific topic, please feel free to message me.
The Perseids peak this weekend, so donāt forget to look up!
Listening to the Heart: the Basics
Ah, the struggle of every baby vet student. Where in the world do you even put your stethoscope? What sounds are you even hearing?Ā Ā
There are four valves in the heart, the pulmonic and aortic (sometimes both referred to as semilunar valves), and mitral and tricuspid (sometimes both referred to as the atrioventricular valves)! The hearts sounds you hear (lub-dub), are from the atrioventricular valves closing (lub), and then the semilunar valves closing! (dub).
Why would it be important know where the valves live? Because if you notice a murmur in a particular location, this can give you an idea of the potential type of diseases present!Ā
Ā On the left side, from intercostal spaces (between ribs) 3-5, there lives the pulmonic, aortic, and mitral valve! (Or PAM, if you like mnemonics!)Ā
Important tip: the part of the heart closest to the shoulder (where the pulmonic and aortic valves live), is called the heart BASE. Which is why if you hear a murmur there, you call it BASILAR. The part of the heart closest to the sternum (where the mitral and on the other side the tricuspid lives) is called the heart APEX. Ā Which is why if you hear a murmur there, you call it APICAL.
On the right side, from intercostal spaces (between ribs) 3-5, there lives the tricuspid valve!Ā
Also, stethoscope tip of the day: Your earbuds are supposed to point FORWARD (toward the patient), not toward your ears!! Donāt listen to everything movies and TV shows show!
