This piece is inspired off of the song, Evermore from The Beauty and the Beast liveaction.
The lyrics personally spoke to me in depicting Sans and Frisk's relationship.
Disclaimer: I will be calling Frisk a she in this explanation. Deal with it.
Sans seems like a judge that observes your actions, acting completely detatched and blameless. In reality, he emotionally clings to the best possible outcomes in the timelines. As an entirely hypothetical character, Frisk is apart of these outcomes. However, he clings to Paci-Frisk in a different, deeper manner. Through viewing Frisk's actions and determination during the true pacifist, Sans developes a genuine fondness of her and the trait she is so famous for; determination. Sans lacks determination, as he so casually points out to the player during his pacifist judgement.
He lacks motivation. In this sense, I believe Sans deeply admires Frisk for her determination in the same way that he admires Papyrus for his optimism. He admires what he doesn't have-
and genuinely loves Frisk for being the person she is during the true pacifist.
So when Frisk switches to a genocide, Sans may not show it, he may claim ignorance, he may act like a passive judge, but in reality he feels betrayed. These feelings bubble to the surface during his genocide battle.
“sounds strange, but before all of this i was secretly hoping we could be friends. i always thought the anomaly was doing this because they were unhappy. and when they got what they wanted, they would stop all this.
and maybe all they needed was... i dunno. some good food, some bad laughs, some nice friends.”
He makes excuses for Frisk.
“i know you didn't answer me before, but... somewhere in there. i can feel it. there's a glimmer of a good person inside of you. someone who once wanted to do the right thing. Someone, who in another time, might have even been... a friend? c'mon, buddy.”
“woah, you look REALLY pissed off... heheheh... did i getcha? well, if you came back anyway... i guess that means we never really WERE friends, huh? heh. don't tell that to the other sans-es, okay?”
He's disappointed in Frisk when she goes back on her MERCY. He'd claim ignorance to continue the delusion that she didn't back stab him.
He hopes that Frisk will come back, and he'll wait in his lonely tower with nobody else to relate to until she comes back.
P.S. You guys can take this and tag it as a Frans thing, but I personally just consider it pure platonic love. (Not that I don't ship Frans hue hue)
