Warning: Late blog entry ahead. Contains information about COVID19. This photo was taken during the peak of COVID19 in the Philippines which was around September. Their extended family requested for an ambulance transfer from their house to a hospital in Laguna. What's heart-wrenching in this picture is that usually when we load a patient in an ambulance, the general rule would be one ambulance is to one patient. This time, due to the demand of transferring patients to different facilities was so high that we needed to load both of them in the ambulance. That's how high the COVID statistics were because no ambulance company would cater them due to budget needs and logistical problems. Secondly what makes this situation so poignant aside from they're both positive for COVID, is that the patient's significant other (the one laying beside the stretcher) died that day and that's her mother-in-law on the stretcher. Her mother-in-law was internationally not notified of the death of her son because of the stress that it will put on to her as she is about to be admitted to recover. I was indeed in fact breaking a teardrop behind my respirator mask and face shield because of the current situation they're in. Aside from experiencing occupational burnout from what I'm doing, thinking about their current situation will surely put on an impression of how the current government is managing the current pandemic. It was at this point that I've realized that nothing (including a PPE) can hide a feeling that's so strong that I needed to shed a teardrop and my PPE was the first witness of this accumulated stress or burnout. Rest assured that I've performed the standard of care to both of my patients as I am expected to do so. The only thing that I'm so bothered by is that my scope of care is so limited that I do get to only bond with them for a short span of time which is whenever we arrive to the receiving hospital and turned them over to the higher authority, our duty is already fulfilled. I wish I could've done something more extensive aside from being a healthcare provider for them at that time.
