Media Conventions: A Contract Between Producers And Consumers

Once we hear the words producers and consumers we instantly think back like how we human beings are producers and consumers ourselves. We produce things, apart from human babies, like our ideas, products and stories and we also consume things, apart from eating food, like how we absorb ideas from other people and sources and understand them.

Now, if we apply the contract between producers and consumers in media, we will sometimes question if is it possible to apply that kind of contract or relationship in the world of media. How is it possible?

Like I said in the beginning, we human beings are consumers and producers ourselves, that not only applies in reality but also in the media world. Since we people produce things which is media worthy and we also “consume” things by reading, watching or even learning things from the media. That is how the contract between producers and consumers work in media world or media conventions. 

We media users produce things online by creating something that is a trend now and we also consume things online by watching or learning something from the world of media. It is also somehow a cycle. We produce new things and then consume something new also.

Symbol vs Ritual

Symbol vs ritual.

Now before getting on about how these two things affect us in life especially in media online, what symbol and ritual?

Symbol is a mark or character used as a conventional representation of an object, function, or process. The letter or letters standing for a chemical element or a character in musical notation. Or in our own simplest words, symbol is something that symbolizes or represents something. Like how McDonalds represent their food chain with a big, capitalized letter M with a yellow glow in it.

While ritual is the prescribed order of performing a ceremony, especially one characteristic of a particular religion or church. It is a series of actions or type of behavior regularly and invariably followed by someone. Or in our own simplest words, ritual is something which is practiced on daily or done everyday , regularly and is followed by. For example, going to church for a mass every Sunday. It’s almost like a habit or a daily routine.

Now, how does these two things affect us in life especially in media online?

When coming back home from school, it is a daily habit of ours to change out of our clothes then do what we need to do. After that, we would get our phone, browse our phone, maybe look into some of our phone’s games and gallery then when we see the Google app logo we would instantly press it since sometimes we need to search for something which we cannot find easily by ourselves. Now, that’s symbol and ritual combined both in reality and in media. It is a great habit of ours to search through online and clicking in some familiar logos of our apps like Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram and etc. which symbolizes some of our most rituals ever. For example, Facebook app logo; our habit or ritual there is to browse some recent posted things there and then like it.

You could say that symbol and ritual can never win out against each other since it is something that is by us mostly too.

Form And Content Are Inseparable

When making movies, stories, novels, films, and such, what are the two most important and main things which cannot and should never be separated at all? That if you remove one thing from the other, the creation which the person is about to make would be nothing or meaningless at all? Form and content.

Now what is form?  The term form refers to the work's style, techniques and media used, and how the elements of design are implemented. Or in my and our own words, it is something which we craft and make it into our own style. While content is:  Content, refers to a work's essence, or what is being depicted. Or in our and my own simplest words, it is something which we see, feel, or hear and is the resulting product of form.

Pen and pad. Now, why is form and content inseparable? 

Form serves content, and often does more. It sometimes makes the content look even more presentable than it already is and even makes the content interesting. Without form, the content would be meaningless or would just look plain boring. And without content, the form would have no meaning in it since there is nothing to describe, depict, or feel in it.

Simply saying, the content is what is being said while the form is how or the way it is being said. It’s like us human beings;the content is what we actually really mean or meant to say while the form is how and the way we actually say it.

That’s why form and content is inseparable in many ways.

People as Media , for me , the only thing which I can only think of is the wisdom and knowledge of a person which will allow him or her to create technology and gadgets. And how a person could add or create such information and publish it online or in the media for others to know and be able to help with.

People as Media also means , for another person to be able to communicate using Media itself for necessary means. Since communication can be verbal and nonverbal and is also an important way for us to be able to understand one another.  

For a person to be able to deliver or post such facts , information or data in the media for others to see and use the repost it again.
