I got the chance to road trip out to the path of totality! My phone camera didn’t do it justice, so I painted what I saw instead 🌞🌚
"Happy year of the dragon, Stormfly!"
I just felt like taking a step back from F&C and painting some characters that I haven't drawn in a while ~<3
It’s so nice to look at this piece; I love the colors and style of it!
Hi! If you are still accepting AU kiss requests, would you be willing to please do Zuko kissing Katara’a scared hands in your “Katara keeps her scars” AU?
Thank you for all the lovely work you’ve been sharing today!
Down in the Catacombs
I've never written fanfiction, let alone published it online, but I love @demaparbat-hp's "Katara keeps her scars," AU. When she was kind enough to make the above drawing, I asked if I could write something to go along with it. Nearly a month later I'm finally ready to share what I've written.
Few things: 1. The first bolded line is attributable to @demaparbat-hp in this post. 2. The second bolded line is the creation of the ATLA writing staff. 3. Thank you in advance if you read this, and if there are any formatting/tag recommendations that you have please pass them along!
***********************************************
Before anything else as she was forced into the catacombs, it was her hands he noticed, the same hands that he had been thinking about since the siege of The North. The last timed they’d shared the same space, he’d been horrified by the scars, different than his own but still irrefutable evidence of fire having burned flesh. In those moments in the North he’d been too focused on beating her and getting to The Avatar to contemplate her scars’ origins, but in the time since, the question of their origin has been a constant companion. Somewhere along the way, “you, you did that to her; you’re just like father,” has become the most frequent answer he can give himself. He hears it whispered by his sister’s always cold and calculating voice, it comes to him in the ever-disappointed voice of his father, and at times it is his own voice, full of rage and anguish, yelling that answer at him. In his quietest, saddest moments, though, he lets himself admit that despite his sister and father’s likely judgments, he does not want to be the kind of person who hurts others with their bending. When he is truly honest with himself, he sees that difference as the root of their disgust with him and feels ashamed.

Summary: Star Wars/Avatar the Last Airbender fusion AU. The Fire Nation, under Fire Lord Palpatine and Lord Vader, has been at War with the world for the last twenty years. When Jyn Erso lands on his doorstep the day Cassian, last southern waterbender, is assigned to protect the Avatar, she seems just another obstacle in ending the War. An obstacle he would willingly remove. For exiled firebender Jyn, the Avatar is her last way home - and to her hostaged father, never mind her own conscience. But as their paths keep crossing, and the Avatar needs all help in saving the world, Jyn and Cassian find they are more alike than they ever thought possible.
No snippet because it’s so long. There’s so much. These kids have been through a war. Get a cup of something warm and read it comfortably in bed.
I love this fic. and the amazing ways in which various cultures are incorporated and real world issues are addressed. It's so well written!
doodle for my friend i did this morning
Here's the thing. I'm a girl, and as a girl, I really like it when girls are portrayed in fiction. Especially fantasy.
But so much fiction/fantasy mixes up 'girls' with 'unstoppable forces of female badass' and there's not necessarily anything wrong with having a character who is an 'unstoppable forces of female badass'. But it gets old real quick. And it is not the same as portraying normal girls, or having good female characters.
And that's one of the many reasons I love Avatar the Last Airbender.
Because all the girl characters have flaws and weaknesses and sometimes act like idiots or jerks. They get emotional and make mistakes. They lose fights or arguments or are just wrong sometimes. Some of them are amazing warriors, and some aren't. Some are powerful or special and some are normal, with nothing special about them.
And I Love that.
I was around the same age as Katara when I first watched Atla. And I instantly connected with her as a character. I loved her optimistic attitude and her fighting spirit. And I could relate with her anger, and with her maternal instinct. I admired her fighting skills of course, but I loved how the show portrayed her compassion and kindness, the way she could both beat up a bunch of bullies AND enjoy a relaxing day at the spa. She was a baddass warrior that should never be crossed. But she was also a normal teenage girl who had a lot of the same internal struggles and problems that I did.
(I never connected to Toph on the same level, but I did relate to her on a few things. She's an adorable trash gremlin who would commit any crime for fun and I love that. But she struggles with being both independent and letting people help her, and I still struggle with that sometimes. I've learned that sometimes, you can help others by letting them help you.)
Yue is, in my opinion, a perfect example of a type of hero that seems to be disappearing. She is not a warrior. She is not a fighter. She's not even a bender.
Yue is a perfect princess, a perfect daughter. She is extremely feminine in a rather older sense.
And she was the only one who could save the world. She gave up everything for her people. She saved everything, everyone, the entire world. Without ever becoming a fighter.
Yue is a perfect example of a girl who was never more than a girl, and how that's okay. Not every girl has to be rough and tumble and fight for her rights in order to change everything. Sometimes it's okay to just be a quiet obedient girly girl. Sometimes that's all it takes to be a hero.
And I love that. Yue is strong in her own way. She is unique and interesting. She appears in only a few episodes and yet manages to be one of my favorite characters.
Song is another great example of this. Song is a healer in a small town. We don't see much of her but we see her compassion and empathy. She is gentle and generous. A healer not a fighter.
She watches Zuko steal her ostrich horse and does nothing.
Is that because she's kind and generous and knows he needs it more? Or is it because she's a healer girl who knows she can't actually stop those two from taking the horse? Maybe neither, maybe both. I have always thought that the scene where Zuko steals the horse and only the audience knows she saw it is one of the most thought-provoking in the series.
Suki is a badass warrior woman who is an awesome fighter and good leader. She is one of the best non bender fighter we see in the entire show. She was one of the smartest, most efficient, and powerful characters we ever saw.
She kissed a boy she had just met because she thought he was cute.
Now don't get me wrong I love SokkaxSuki. Its one of the best couples in the show.
But Suki totally did the old 'love at first sight' thing. And that is awesome. Because when she kisses him she delivers one of the best lines, not only from her, but, I think, in the entire show.
"I AM a warrior, but I'm a girl too."
Being a warrior doesn't mean that she isn't also a teenage girl. She might be a fighter, but she still gets crushes and likes to flirt with cute boys. And hey, she picked a good one. Not every boy is going to come break you out of prison.
Anyways, let's have more realistic girls in fiction. And please enjoy the next 24 hours.

Hi @gemgirl28! From the writing prompt list you posted earlier, may I please request:
32. “I think I’m in love with you, and I’m terrified,” for Zutara!
Thank you, and I hope you’re having a good day!
Hello dear! Thank you! It was a nice (mostly) lazy Sunday 💜 I hope you have a great day as well!
OOOOOO I SEE YOU HERE YES. YES VERY MUCH. Watch this get out of hand SO fast.
32. “I think I’m in love with you and I’m terrified.”
Katara hastily stuffed her papers in her bag, heart racing, hands shaking. The council room, always so hot and stuffy, felt impossibly small in the wake of Minister Yun's proposal.
Katara had to get out, had to find some fresh air, had to breathe.
She raced through the twisting hallways of the Fire Nation Palace, barely sidestepping servants in her haste to drop her bag in her office. Once deposited, she stood for just a moment, debating the risk of hurting herself is he jumped from her tiny office window and catch herself with the pond water, or if it was worth it.
Minister Yun's dry voice echoed in her ears, and her mind was made up.
The window it was.
She wrenched it open and jumped onto the edge. Just as she was swinging her feet over, one arm already searching for the cool water, someone cleared their throat.
"I know the meetings are bad, but I didn't think we'd quite reached 'jump from a second story window' bad."
Katara froze, holding her breath, as if that would make him go away. How could she be so stupid as to leave her door open?
"Katara? Are you okay?" Zuko asked, fully coming into her office and closing the damned door behind him. He stopped just on the other side of her desk, hands raised as if to reach for her.
She closed her eyes, counted ten slow, steady breaths, and decided she could fake it for just a few more minutes. Just enough to get him out of her office so she could make her escape.
"I'm fine, just wanted some fresh air." Not a lie. "The meetings are... fine." A lie. "I just... needed some air," she repeated, nearly wincing.
"Katara- is this about-"
"Did you need something Zuko?" She interrupted. No one else on his council would dare interrupt the Fire Lord. Then again, no one else on his council could be considered a close, personal friend.
Just a friend. Just- friends.
Still, his brow furrowed at the interruption. He took a cautious step closer, and then another.
"Yes. You- you rushed out of the meeting so quickly, I wanted to check on you."
"I needed some air."
"You said that."
She shrugged, not able to find any other words for the clawing sensation inside her chest. The office was starting to shrink, too, the way the council room had.
"Katara- I'm not going to marry Minister Yun's daughter."
He said it softly, but the force of it still sucked all the air out of the room.
"Why- why not? It would be advantageous, would it not?" She hated the way her voice shook.
Zuko sighed, and took another step closer. "I don't love her. It's important that you know that." Another step. "And after a hundred years of war- after everything the Fire Nation has been through- well, I think I could do worse things than marrying for love." Another step, nearly to her. "You must know that."
"Why does it matter if I know?" She asked on a breath. They both swallowed.
"Because- I think I'm in love with you, and I'm terrified."
"Zuko-" She couldn't find her voice before he kept talking, and she wondered if she'd even said his name at all.
"I do- I do love you. I am terrified, because you mean so very much to me." He took a deep breath. "But I think- if maybe, you thought someday you could feel the same- well, I definitely shouldn't marry Minister Yun's daughter."
"I do."
Zuko froze in place from where he'd nearly reached her, still perched on the edge of the window. "You do-"
"Love you. Already. I love you." Spirits, what a relief it was to say it after all these years. Katara grinned. "And it is terrifying. But- but Zuko, I love you."
"Why haven't you- you never- Katara-" he started, stopping when she laughed.
"Come here and help me down so I can kiss you."
She'd never seen him move so quickly before.
And the next day, when Zuko formally turned down any and all future marriage proposals in favor of marrying for love, Katara thought it still sounded terrifying, but also like she could breathe just a little easier. Especially when Zuko smiled at her.
Send me a prompt and a pairing!
@gemgirl28, thank you so much for this story! I'm so glad you saw the vision I was having with that prompt because this story is exactly what I'd hoped for from my request! I so appreciate you taking the time to respond and thank you again for your kindness!
annie: careful, if you keep being so sweet, people are going to start thinking you’re in love with me.
nimble: what could i ever have possibly done, to make you think that i’m not?
I love this so much, and this is so in character for each of them!
they're the hottest most charming couple on television and no one will ever even KNOW
It took me 11 months to actually be able to figure out how to watch season 1.B (and then make the time to watch it when it actually aired), but the wait was worth it if just to get to see more interactions between these two, including their happy, sort-of ending!
The last light holder
Oooooh, there's so much story potential here, and I think the lighting and detail-work is incredible!
Alrighty, here's my first bit of fanart for 2024! Asha and Starboy from Disney's Wish - more specifically, Wish's concept art :''') I haven't seen the movie, but I think I can confidently say that I would've been more interested in seeing it if they'd kept the romance/soulmate dynamic from the early concepts.
But anyways, here's my take on Star's design, and also a little cheek kiss for Asha! :D Also, I never made an official "Happy New Year" post, so I just wanted to say thank you all for your support in my art and writing endeavours! I hope this year is a kind one for you, and may all your wishes come true <333
This piece is so tender and delicate, and that is a dynamic that I would so appreciate seeing between two Disney love interests! Thank you for sharing this beautiful version of what could have been!
A man fell from the sky...! ✨️
gorgeous!
The Painted Lady.
One of my favourite scenes in ATLA. A lot of people apparently don't like this episode that much, but I really like Katara focused episodes. I also thought it was very interesting that they also showed the negative effects of the war and industrialization of the Fire Nation also negatively affected their citizens and I like that the Gaang helped them.
This is so evocative! All of the colors complement each other so well, and I also love the juxtaposition of the painterly, soft strokes used for the clouds as compared to the smooth and definitive lines of the ripples in the water. lovely work!
