I’ve always liked the idea of Boris being a bit of a sleazy person and a miser when he can, he sees everything as an opportunity to make a profit on the side, during the events of the story since Rose’s family is loaded with cash cause she is a the daughter of a french politician and businessman, plus her mother is of high English society. His fees for his assistance is at least 5000 pounds in today’s money.

After all for him, wasting his precious time requires payment, a little something he picked up in his youth, the moral of the story is, don’t go asking Boris for help with a task of finding someone’s family or anything else as he will charge you out the ass for cash.

Ratigan perked a brow at the mention of Basil, even though he resisted the urge to roll his eyes at Patrick’s idea of making a trap to capture him. As if anyone (besides Ratigan himself of course) could ever someone as annoyingly slick as that little pipsqueak.

Still, the professor could make good use of Patrick with the blubbering oaf in this sort of desperation.

Ratigan pursed his lips and cocked his head as he neared Patrick. “You know you are no match for Basil. He’d realize your trap long before he even sees it.” Then out of nowhere, he swiftly undid Patrick’s ties, causing the mouse to fall face-first into the water. “That being said, you may have some worth as a spy.”

The Engineer starting spitting and coughing as he struggled over to the shore, he hadn’t swum in forever, not to mention the water was so cold, that it felt like a thousand knives stabbing him all at once. He had fallen into an underground river once two years ago but it wasn’t as bad as this. Perhaps if he had his clothing then maybe it wouldn’t be so cold... Wait a second... Well that was a dumb thought.

Pulling himself onto the bank, his teeth were chattering and he was shivering, what a horrible night this was indeed, “W-W-Well...” He began as he tried to warm himself up, “You never know, he could be dimwitted sometimes, every genius has his faults he could probably walk right into it and be kicked down a well...” Patrick mumbled, rubbing his hands together and breathing into them, he did want to add something snarky but he didn’t want to end up back on the wheel or thrown off Big Ben himself...

But, he looked up at Ratigan with a surprised look on his face when it clicked in what he wanted.

“A-A Spy?!” He said, taken aback by the comment, “But surely Basil would see right through me if that’s the case!”

Boris stopped in his tracks, dropping a couple cogs that he was holding as they scattered on the floor, the mouse let out an annoyed grunt and ran to pick most of them up. But he turned around and pointed at the two.

“First of all, I am not afraid of nothing and second of all!”

“You both just caused me to drop some important materials needed for building my latest project!” Boris scowled, picking up another cog and piling it neatly in his hands... Wow, Patrick’s work ethic was really rubbing off on him.

Ratigan shook his head with a sympathetic pout. “Oh my poor dear boy!” His voice dripped with false pity. “Of course that awful mean ol’ Basil would harass you! If memory serves me right, however, you had been very well protected under my care.”

At this point, the larger rodent draped a thick arm around the boy’s shoulders. “Okay, if you’d roughed up a bit here and there, but what’s life as a criminal without a little toughening up? Besides, were you not already something of an outcast before you joined me? The only difference is that few outside my group dared mess with you.”

Ratigan nuzzled the top of Boris’ head. “All I’m saying is that you shouldn’t be out there all by yourself, not after everything you’ve been through. Why not just come back to me?”

Boris grumbled an insult about Basil under his breath, his damn mediling in his affairs and always asking him about things that he should’ve picked up on without anyone’s help was grating, he didn’t want to admit he wanted to chase Basil away with a metal pipe... But... Ratigan was right, he was an outcast among the other mice in Southwark before running with him for a while, many of them thought that he was better than them or even didn’t bother to look his way, he was lucky to have Theodore and a couple others.

“So what, I still have my fair amount of scraps before joinin’ you and even when I was still with ya, a lot of the rodents under ya liked to try to pick fights with yer favorite.” Boris replied with a flat tone in his voice, he was obviously talking about himself and the times he got into a fight and outsmarted two other mice who wanted to see if he would fit in with them.

Damn lowlifes, all of them... But then, that would make him a lowlife too.

The younger rodent tensed up at Ratigan’s touch, he bit his lower lip and sighed, he could very well join him again...after all, it was not like Basil was going to stop annoying him or even the fact that a lot of the other rodents considered him... tainted in a sense by Ratigan.

But if Patrick or even his father could be lured to Ratigan’s side, well in the case of the former, he was forced, what could that spell for him. Ratigan already had an engineer working for him... He had to ponder his options, there could be benefits for joining him again, Boris fell silent, weighing his options.

“Fine then... What’s in it fer me ya large bastard.” He said finally, with a grim tone in his voice.
