    The sudden toss was startling to Basil, making him lean forward as though to try and grab the book. All it really did though was have Basil end up in Ratigan’s lap, looking quite cross with the rodent. 

    “Oh, very mature.” Basil huffed, adjusting his seating in the rat’s lap. Might as well commit to it. “What’s your plan now, clever one?”

Bail gave a soft hum of agreement, relaxing fully against Ratigan. Rather cutely, though he wouldn’t see it as such, the fluff of his cheek squished up against the rat’s chest, so very comfortable against him. He tried to keep reading the boring pages, not wanting to think about their position.

What were they doing…? Basil doesn’t indulge in domestic moments like this. He didn’t deserve them, and neither did Ratigan. He should move, he should leave, he should… he should… he stayed. Basil stayed right there like he belonged in Ratigan’s arm.

If Ratigan wanted him gone, he’ll have to remove Basil himself. “I should have brought my reading glasses.” Basil mused to himself.

  Basil’s statement snapped Ratigan back and he realised he had just been looking over the same page at least several times whilst lost in thought. He glanced down to Basil who was squinting at the book, followed by a roll of the rodent’s eyes.

  “ Perhaps you ought to considered bringing them everywhere as I do,” Ratigan stated, straightening out the book in his hand. “Perhaps then you wouldn’t have such a permanent frowny look upon your face, all that squinting does terrible things to one’s complexion and eyes, you shall look like you’re staring through a peephole by the time you are my age.”

Basil couldn’t help but make a bit of a face at Ratigan over his comment, not wanting to admit he was probably right. Even Dawson bagged him to remember his glasses when they go out and about the city, should he need them. Not his fault they were embarrassing to wear.

In a flash of pettiness, Basil reached up and snatched Ratigan’s glasses from his face, putting them on his own and settling back against him. Ah- now he can see the words clearly.

“That’s better.”

   Ah, Basil knew this one, quite useful in his own scientific research– but Ratigan was somewhat right. He’s read it multiple times, and uses it as reference for some of his own work, but it was boring at times. Basil likes a more exciting read typically.

   “Oh, yes, I’ve read that book. Gets boring after a couple read throughs.” Basil sighed a bit as he relaxed back into Ratigan’s side, resting his cheek against that broad chest. It was the perfect resting spot, Basil decided then. Warm and comfortable. He wouldn’t dare let Ratigan know of course.

   “That’s true. When you’ve read everything in reach, it all starts to sound the same.”

  “ Indeed…Quite the bore reading the same material over and over again, some seem to just write the same thing but in different ways for their own books, hmph… How lazy…” He grumbled, not entirely noticing as Basil rested his head across him.

 They fell into silence once more, Ratigan slowing turning a couple of pages as he read, brows furrowed in concentration and arm resting comfortably around the mouse. It hardly occured to him that it was such a domestic setting, it almost felt natual having Basil there.

Eyes briefly looked away from his pages and down to the detective nuzzled into him and he felt his chest thud. Both anger, annoyance and frustration started to build. Why were they sat like this again? Why was he allowing this?… Oh yes… Because it was…… Nice?

Grumbling the rodent inhaled in an attempt to calm himself. This was just a game, it was just a playful tease on Basil…. Right?

    A little squeak, an involuntary one of course, escaped Basil when he was squeezed nearly too tight, squirming in the grip. Really, his face was burning hot-- and he was sure by now that even Ratigan can feel the heat. A married couple? That thought never occurred to Basil before. People usually compared him and Dawson to a married couple.

    “Ah-- hardly.” Basil huffed as Ratigan turned his attention back to the book. The mouse squirmed again, trying to get a peak at the pages, struggling a bit without his reading glasses. “What are you reading?”

    Basil raised a brow at the response, and curled further into Ratigan as a sot of faux-response to the ruffling. Really he was just trying to hide from having Ratigan see his blushing face. Or could he even see the red past his fur? Either way, the insides of his ears were turning pink.

    “Because you’re a manipulative, villainous, creature.” Never mind the mouse’s willingness to cuddle up to him while he read. 

    “What do you get from this anyway?” Basil asked, peaking up at that grinning face. “I don’t get it.”

    “This is only for a moment.” Basil assured, though wasn’t sure of himself. Ratigan was rather warm, and the spot he’s snuggled his way into was so very nice. He liked the petting. “Just– to rest a moment.”

“Of course, of course,” Ratigan shook the statement off, not fully believing the fact that Basil just wanted to rest. “Whatever you say Basil~”

Reaching for his reading glasses from his inner pocket, the criminal placed them onto his face and began to read the book he had picked up, allowing the detective to stay clung to his side… He wouldn’t admit it but… He was rather enjoying the company too. The presence of another beside him without having to bed them, quite… Calming.

He had them, sure, but wearing them felt embarrassing and he avoided it when he could. But, as much as he wanted to read quietly and enjoy the shared moment of company, his mind wandered.

“Why are you letting me do this?” Basil asked after some time and a few pages, his voice hardly more than a whisper. It made no sense to him. Was it only to attack him later? “You hate me.”

 Eyebrows rose when the mouse snuggled into the crook of his arm, but the rodent quickly relaxed, an extremely smug look on his face.

 “ Of course not, my dear boy, nothing at all,” he chuckled, letting his arm hang around the detective, fingers brushing against the other’s arm as if petting a cat, his own hand lifted up a book curiously. “You just lay back, relaxxxx and let me debate on how to use this against you upon a later date, hmm?”
