i genuinely love reading dense academic writing when it's done well it feels like getting hit in the head with a baseball bat but in a good way

I still firmly believe that MDZS has one of the best introductions of a novel EVER. Like, the very first line being "Rejoice, Wei Wuxian is dead!" followed by a crowd cheering and gossiping about him, while you as a reader know nothing more than a general overview of the plot and that this Wei Wuxian guy is the main character, is CRAZY work. That shit got me hooked INSTANTLY.

alright some random thoughts about ms incognito after watching the finale:

[obviously spoilers below]

- the show overall was pretty entertaining even though the plot barely made sense and ultimately needed a guy to rise from the dead and get himself killed for real to end it. yeo bin carried it with her acting and that’s that. side characters were also good, but I’m not sure I’d push through it without her incredible charisma throughout.

- the romance was… cute at times, and I see the vibe they were aiming for - a safe place for the fl to come back to and have a loving home, someone to protect and care for her, who doesn’t expect anything in return. BUT it felt… kinda shoehorned in? we had some significant moments and bonding, but not enough imo, not to mention that the ending felt so rushed and didn’t really convince me. I loved the early vibe of them being partners, power couple and all that. ultimately he got brushed off to the side until the very end by her, waiting on hands and knees. not a fan.

while we can all make inferences that she needed time and to accept the love offered by him, it didn’t feel like a proper emotional resolution. so yeah - a bit forced and unsatisfying. not to mention, after everything (and especially the dramatic split at the scene of the murder) for us not to get any passionate reunion at all? disappointing overall.

- now, lee don… to say that, if he wasn’t so clearly queer coded to me, he’d be a better fit for the actual romantic plot would be an understatement. he had better chemistry with her, and by the end I really wished he was the character they decided to make the romantic lead of the show?? but then the ending - potential second season? god forbid an actual romance?? - feels like a slap to the face. DO NOT make this man straight no matter how much I want him to have a romance plot. I would only accept if he was the ml to begin with.

maybe if the framing was a bit different. but yeong ran just didn’t want to let dong min in for the longest time and thus in a way developed a closer bond with lee don in that respect. he understood her better in the end, purely by the virtue of being with her through all of this. I was desperately hoping for dong min to at least be the one to comfort her in the last ep, but nope. lee don was there though. just a few adjustments and we could’ve been watching a completely different drama.

anyway, I’d say this show was a 7/10 for me. a fun watch, great cast and characters, but just didn’t fully carry out the potential it had for me.
