It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

What is the Dies Irae? I'm glad you asked. The Dies Irae (pronounced dee-us ear-ay) is a motif found in pretty much any film score with death in it. It's a collection of 4 notes (F E F D) and can be followed by Dies Illa (E C D D) but not always. The Dies Irae/Illa is also in a minor key with the only accent being a B-flat. That's partly why it's so disorienting. It's the theme of death, essentially. Important to note that it doesn't always start on F, it is usually note 1, note 2 (half step down) note 1 again, and note 3 (1 and a half steps down from n1)

If you're unaware of a half step (I don't blame you, music theory is hard and annoying) look up a picture of a keyboard. There are white and black keys. If you press a key and skip either a white or black key, it's a whole step. If you press a different key and go to the one right next to it (black or white) it is a half step.

If you've watched literally any movie you've likely heard it. It can be found in Danny Elfman's "Making Christmas" and is the first notes you hear in "Making Christmas". The whole song is practically a lesson in Dies Irae, honestly. it's like only Dies Irae and then some embellishments, I swear to god.

How did I find the Dies Irae/Dies Illa in the Project Hail Mary soundtrack? I listen to a lot of Sweeney Todd and I did competitive music theory. I was a music nerd and I continue to be so.

I won't be able to tell you how many songs have the Dies Irae in the PHM soundtrack simply because there's SO many songs, but it's in (as far as I can tell, I could be wrong because I'm doing this by ear) every track that pertains to something going on with astrophage. Shockingly, it's not in You Were Loved (A Burial) as far as I can tell. It might be in there very hidden but I can't tell, and I don't have sheet music. A good reference note is in Top Secret Clearance from 59 seconds in. The instrument is doing the exact pattern of the Dies Irae/some of the Dies Illa.
