He rereads the message, once, twice, THREE TIMES, before he’s made up his mind.
Really, Chad had made up his mind a long time ago. The first time he saw the work Maurice was putting into that RATTY VAN he bought from his mom (you almost wouldn’t recognize it now). The quiet conversations over soda about how NICE it would be to just leave everything behind had never felt more real until then.
Felt even MORE real now.
Part of him balks at the idea of leaving, of just dropping everything in his life and RUNNING AWAY like a coward. The much bigger part is lured in by the DESIRE to leave everything behind, to ESCAPE the anxiety, and guilt, and SHAME.
It’s not cowardly to want to feel like HIMSELF again.
It’s not cowardly to want to do some GOOD again.
He REMEMBERS his time as an operative, before Numbuh 100 had him transferred to Moonbase. How much JOY he found in seeing the world, in helping kids anywhere he found himself. Really, it was never even a CHOICE.
No but where’s my thread where DECOM!CHAD has to get Recommissioned to stop a MAJOR CRISIS and once it’s done and the Recommissioning Module is WEARING OFF, he breaks down crying because he doesn’t want to go again.

For a moment he’s PARALYZED, hands gripping onto his phone tight enough that his knuckles turned white. But that can be attributed to the surprise of nearly having a very expensive looking iphone knocked from his hands. Where it SURELY would have shattered against the pavement.
He PRETENDS not to notice that the screen is cracking anyway from the force of his grip.
“Uh, don’t worry about it. . .” She’s already GONE before he can say anything else, that that’s probably for the BEST. Chad had seen so many people come and go because of their life.
He’s at least glad that Abby looks like she’s happy.
Cree must be waiting to bring her to the Ninja’s. SAVORING the newfound lack of hostility between them now that Abby isn’t FIGHTING HER anymore.
Chad shakes his head to clear away his shock, pockets his phone, and heads into the candy store. He really needed something STRONG right now. Dark Chocolate, preferably.

“You’re going to think this is the MOST CLICHE thing you’ve ever heard. See, my folks had to move. My dad got a big wig promotion or something in Fair City. Superhero cities don’t usually get KND operatives, so, I was kind of freaked out at the idea that my folks could be upgrading to GENUINE super-villain status.”
Of course he STILL had to deal with that. But that had nothing to do with BECKY.
“Becky was my STUDENT GUIDE when I transferred into the high school. She was really cool, and smart, and well, it’s a DISNEY MOVIE in the making. Jock meets Nerd and all that, and we hit it off from there. . .”
Chad figuring out who he is WITHOUT the Kids Next Door is a huge part of his character arc I never really explored before, which is a CRIME on my part. Chad learning to LET GO of his time with the KND and move on in a healthy way that doesn’t involve the TEEN NINJA’S or the fight against ADULT TYRANNY is so important to his development.
He’s able to calm down FINALLY and focus on HIMSELF and what HE wants and it leads to A LOT of his growth as a person and into a MODERATELY well adjusted ADULT.

Chad being able to form REAL CONNECTIONS with other people his age without an ULTERIOR MOTIVE of being TND
Chad learning his parents are CANONICALLY BRAINWASHING HIM and pulling away from their influence even if he loves them.
Chad moving AWAY from the TND or TEEN NINJA’S and becoming a Vigilante Hero in his own right, fighting the GOOD FIGHT but on HIS OWN terms.

He TENSES, looking up from his phone to observe the stranger. Looking for some clue on how he should respond. Uncertain if he’s expected to LIE, and say he HATES the Kids Next Door now, for everything he stood to LOSE from them. The memories of who he is, his childhood from AGE FOUR TO NOW had been devoted to the Kids Next Door.
OF COURSE he still cared. He cared more then ANYTHING.
But he was selfish, he didn’t want to lose what he had now. He’d CLUNG to his need to do more, until he’d watched EVERYTHING that he’d built in his entire life go up in flames like the BRIDGES he’d burned that day on Moonbase.
