Quote by Joseph Daniel Wilson
A Book a week can keep Ignorance Weak.
if I were to show you my flaws would you love me the same? (The Story of Rebeca Mathai )
Her name is Rebeca Mathai, a young lady doing commerce in one of the prestigious colleges in India, with lots of friends around her every time. Her Facebook timeline flooded with pictures of hangouts with her friends; she never stops smiling. This idiosyncrasy has deluded her friends into believing that she is strong, whereas she wasn’t. Rebeca just couldn’t trust anyone; she always gave, never took anything in return. She felt vulnerable to receive thinking that it would make her feel weak. This is Rebeca Mathai.
Rebeca came back to her hostel from one such hangout, after her chores she came to the balcony of her hostel with a cup of lemon tea she had made. She then took out her phone to post the picture in her Facebook account she took that day, after skimming through the news feeds and liking few posts, Rebeca was lured into her usual thoughts, ones that had been bothering her since she joined college. She took a sip of the lemon tea and took a deep breath. Rebeca wanted to vent out her feeling to someone but felt vulnerable to let her feeling out, she was insecured. The only place that Rebeca found to vent out her feeling without being judged was her WhatsApp status. She changed her status to “if I were to show you my flaws would you love me the same? “.
As she was staring at her status for a while, she suddenly heard a commotion, it was her hostel dog named Dongle chasing away the other hostel dog Wi-Fi and its gang. Rebeca was surprised to see what Dongle had just did now, because Dongle was not an ordinary dog, it was three legged-dog. Dongle was not afraid of its odds to chase away the healthy counter-part Wi-Fi and its gang. Immediately Rebeca’s eyes rolled towards her WhatsApp status “if I were to show you my flaws would you love me the same?“. It was as if she had found a striking resemblance between her situation and that of Dongle. She felt that the dots were connecting in her puzzle.
Dongle was neither afraid nor insecured about its flaw, rather Dongle chose to accept its flaw and stay confident about it. The culmination of this realisation of Dongle was that, its flaw was overshadowed by its confidence to chase away Wi-Fi. On the other hand Wi-Fi was blinded by Dongle’s confidence and failed to see the flaw of Dongle.
Rebeca was stunned! What she had just witnessed was an answer to the problem she was facing. But she wasn’t sure whether the ultimate solution to her problem has been found. Rebeca asked herself “how Dongle was able to gather-up its confidence despite the realisation of its inherent flaw and accept it?”. Rebeca got a partial answer to her question as she recalled the sight she had just seen. Dongle knew what it is capable of, also its weakness. On the whole, Dongle had a self-realisation of itself.
Rebeca finished her lemon tea and went to the wash area to rinse her cup. As she was washing her cup, she asked herself “where can I find myself? What is my worth? Who can show me who I am? Where can I get this self-realisation?” just after she had rinsed her cup the hostel bell went off for the evening prayer. Rebeca Mathai who usually distanced herself from religion and God decided to do something different that day. Trusting her hunch she decided to go the prayer hall.
The prayer secretary of the hostel welcomed the gathering and extended a special welcome to Rebeca Mathai, a popular senior among the juniors, who is also the batch-mate of prayer secretary. Rebeca smiled acknowledging the warm greeting. She then looked around the prayer hall and stumbled on a board which said “We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand, Isaiah 64:8” she just couldn’t take her eyes of that board, her mind inundated with thoughts Rebeca questioned herself “if that is the case, then for the clay to know who it is a jar, a plate or a pot; the clay has to ask the potter, is it not?” Rebeca was lured into her thoughts. She immediately left the prayer hall and rushed to her room and fell flat on her bed covering her face. Rebeca had two options either to ask the potter or hold onto to her ego. The lights went off in her room after sometime.
The next evening Rebeca’s friends saw her WhatsApp DP. It was a selfie with Dongle and the status went like this “Dongle knows who he is, so do I”.
The difference for a difference
A ship which needs to change its course of path makes a different move to port or to starboard; a vehicle to change its direction is steered to left or right but however a change is apparent in the course of action. A train travelling from one destination to the other has to switch many tracks to reach its destined station , on its way it has to avail to the difference on its course of path, if not there are no odds of it reaching its destination. An artist who usually uses pencil to portray his imagination if she intends to have a choice of painting involving colours has to switch to colours, for she cannot paint a colourful painting with pencil alone.
Everybody desires to have a change in their life; from Albert to Anand, Nixon to Narayanan, Neha to Nazareth, Naomi to Niranjana. All of us wait for a change in their job, family, career, relationship the list is infinitesimal. Everyone wakes up with a hope that the new sun would bring new direction, new possibility, but here lies the irony, those who wish for a change unfortunately counts on a transformation that does not entail any effort from oneself. A train has to switch tracks to reach its destination. A cook who intends to prepare a new cuisine would never add same proportion of items to the dish from that of the old one. The proportion and the spices to be used should necessarily be changed accordingly for the new cuisine, which is the law of nature.
At this juncture those hoping for a change, it is necessary to introspect whether we are adding different proportion of items to our dish or the same items and waiting for the dish to transform itself into that which we desire? Let me quite on the metaphorical expression and put it black and white, are we waiting for a change without being a catalyst for difference? If so there isn’t going to be a change.
Waking up at the same time, sleeping at the same time, taking the same route to work , having the same indifferent attitude towards work and people , watching the same TV program, clinging on to the monotonous mundane chores which has made things comfy and leaving no room for a change and the account extends.
For new things to happen in life novel efforts needs to come into play. If you wanna be creative and explore new possibilities at your work, at college or wherever, the quintessential need is new effort and new thinking.
Wake up at a different time, say hello to a person you have never wished, take a new route for work even if it’s the longest route, watch a new TV channel, develop the new habit that is need for your passion, read books, do different things be spontaneous ……… because ship, vehicle, train whatever it may be, to reach its destination it has to change its course of path. On that note let me close with this “to reach our goal we have change our course of path”.
Different or Accepted
The general understanding or belief is that everybody is unique, hence everybody wants to be different , the irony is that everybody craves to be different and be accepted at the same time , when everyone is different there is no objective preference or objective likeness or objective taste. This issue can be a problem or it can be overlooked, so what happens when it is seen as a problem, when there is no objective idea or preference everything should be considered and be accepted, appreciated and celebrated as well and good because there is incommensurability, there is no common ground or yardstick to measure which is better over the other, albeit in reality it is the otherwise.
So the question is should people strive to be different or accepted , if one wants to be accepted one should have a common ground for everything from alpha to omega , rather if he/she wants to be different one “must ” be inclusive of everyone’s idea and preference… Question remains should we strive to be different or accepted.
