I was reading this article about twitter earlier that lowkey blew my mind.

The hashtag turned 10 years old yesterday, and it was created (as we currently know it) on Twitter.

However, Twitter as a company did not invent this usage of the hashtag. It was a user.

Twitter did not coin the term “tweet” 

Twitter did not create their bird logo first

Twitter did not support @replies or character counts until a 3rd party app started doing it first

All of those things were created or coined by outside parties and later adopted by twitter. They really fell ass backwards into a good product.

Twitter is a great product, and arguably the most culturally relevant social network in existence. 

Facebook is the biggest, Instagram is the “coolest”, but Twitter is where things actually happen and the culture moves. 

Whether its Donald Trump shit, or the creation of #BlackLivesMatter, or live updates from Aleppo during a civil war…. that happens on Twitter first.
