Our little Japanese New Year decoration! It shows the 12-year cycle of animal zodiac signs (originally Chinese and later brought to Japan). Each year you put that year's sign in front, and this year is the Year of the Monkey. If you travel to Japan in December and would like a unique souvenir that's small and easy to pack, department stores often have little New Year displays like this for sale. I think ours would have been around $20 in USD.
Saru (Monkey - 2016 zodiac animal)
This cute cake represents the famous three wise monkeys (sanen) which can be found for example in Nikko Tosho-gu shrine.
Mizaru (見ざる) sees no evil, Kikazaru (言わざる) hears no evil and Iwazaru (聞かざる) speaks no evil. Their names are a pun on saru (monkey) and zaru (an old negative form).

At 142 pages it’s much more comprehensive than many magazines or mooks (magazine/book hybrids) on yukata. And it’s got English galore by design rather than just the English letters being a graphics conceit in a few pretty pictures or as a rare caption.
That said I wish it were magazine sized (it’s a tiny 8.3 x 5.1 x 0.6 inches rather than 8.5 x 11″ or A4 sized) and also included a DVD (the newest thing in kimono book and mook publishing is to include a short DVD with dressing tips in Japanese and with a disc encoded for Japan’s (DVD Region Code 3) that could have the same basic dressing and knot tying methods with a soundtrack and captioning in both English and Japanese
4 out of 5 stars for an overall rating but a must have if you like yukata (especially women’s yukata) and don’t read kanji or speak Japanese.

「さる」の漢字(かんじ)は、普通(ふつう)は「猿(さる)」と書(か)きますが、この十二支(じゅうにし)の場合(ばあい)のみ、「申(さる)」を使(つか)います。
You usually write “猿(saru)” to express “monkey” in kanji, but ”申(saru)” is used only in the case of this “juu ni shi”.
平成(へいせい)二十八(にじゅうはち)年(ねん) = the year of 2016
2016年(にせんじゅうろくねん)は、日本(にほん)の暦(こよみ)では平成28年(へいせいにじゅうはちねん)と言(い)います。
2016 is called “平成28年(Heisei nijuu hachi nen)” in Japanese calendar.
元旦(がんたん gan tan)
1月(いちがつ)1日(ついたち)の朝(あさ)を表(あらわ)す言葉(ことば)です。
This word means the morning of January 1st.

Jidai Matsuri, or Festival of the Ages, is a big historical parade in Kyoto. Maiko, geiko and Kyoto citizens dress up as important figures from Japan’s past.
Each December, Sensō-ji in Asakusa hosts the Hagoita-ichi (浅草羽子板市) or Battledore Market. It’s a fair that focuses on hagoita (羽子板), a paddle or racket that’s used in a New Year’s game called hanetsuki (羽根突き, 羽子突き). I quote from Wikipedia:
Hanetsuki is a traditional game, similar to badminton without a net, played with a rectangular wooden paddle called a hagoita and a brightly coloured shuttlecock. Often played by girls at New Year, the game can be played in two fashions: by one person attempting to keep the shuttlecock aloft as long as possible, or by two people batting it back and forth. Although hanetsuki is not as popular as it used to be, decorative hagoita are commonly sold throughout Japan.
The game itself gradually lost its popularity, but hagoita turned into an elaborately decorated New Year’s charm. It reached its zenith during the Edo era: instead of simply painting auspicious pictures of the bamboo-pine-plum trio of good luck on wooden paddles, Edo craftsmen used so-called “stuffed pictures” (押し絵, oshi-e) of their favourite kabuki actors.

A quick translation:
“Guests at a wedding, looking like colorful flowers, expressing our happy, festive feelings through our kimono. Congratulations (to the bride and groom)!”
These are some very chic women’s geta from Kururi, meant to be worn with casual outfits.
Typically geta are only worn with summer cotton yukata, and without the split-toed tabi socks you can see in some of the above pictures. Also, while not true 100% of the time, women’s geta are usually more rounded while men’s are more squared off.
That said, these geta are clearly feminine despite their sharp angles and are super stylish, enough to not only be worn with yukata (as you can see on the right shot of the woman) but also the next step up, with tabi and casual kimono (as you can see on the left).
These shots also show an interesting feature of traditional Japanese footwear: the thong is in the middle of the shoe, so there is no right or left foot. Your toes, no matter how tiny your foot is, will hang off the side a bit.

The top pattern on the top cup, the repeating waves of dots, is called "same" (sah-may) which means "shark". A stylistic representation of sharkskin, the pattern is also popular on a type of kimono called edo-komon.
How is the new year celebrated in Japan?
It really depends on individual lifestyle. Some visit temple to take part in joya no kane on the New year’s eve. In big cities, trains run all night this day because many people visit temples to make the first wish of the year.
We prepare festive dishes which is called osechi. My grand parents’ generation prepared everything by themselves (all the relatives get together and help to each other), but nowadays, many of us simply *buy* them.
Japanese workers generally have one-week-day-off to celebrate this season. It depends on the calendar of the year, but most workplaces including banks and city halls close on 28th and they restart on Jan.4th. Meanwhile, people visit hometown to see their parents or go travel.
Personally, this year, my husband has a lot of work to be done by the day his clients start their jobs, so he will be literally canned at home during this year’s holiday season and I will support him so everything goes fine. We bought a set of nice osechi meals, and it is supposed to be delivered on the New year’s eve at least :)

Not yukata, but if anyone’s into the lillies, Kimonomachi has a new line of synthetic komon, one of which I was reminded up…. and is also considerably easier on the wallet lol.

Kururi Kimono has this light cream-colored kimono made of “domestically-produced silk” with a motif they call a “Yukiwa” (snow circle).
The flowers/snowflakes are handmade by the shibori tie-dye method. The kimono itself is incredibly soft and elegant, the lavender and pink are very cute with the light yellow, but the real star here is that semi-formal obi with high contrast.
The little touches of gold and pink in the obi’s motif really bring out the colors in the kimono. The heavy structure of the botan flowers and the black background not only give contrast to the kimono but a focal point. Sometimes a black obi will suck the life out of a kimono and leave it feeling dull. Here there is enough color in the obi that the black and grey bleaches the yellow immediately around it but the kimono’s edges glow brighter yellow and the little pink flowers really pop.
I think this kimono is actually a houmongi, but certainly one intended for younger women. :)
This is really pretty! Kururi sells some great pieces.
The seller lists it as a tsukesage (a kimono type one step down in formality from houmongi, for readers who don’t know those terms) on the Japanese page, and says that because of its simple pattern you could even wear it as daily wear if you wanted to dress up for a casual outing.
