Ya know what? Lemme get in on this while I have a minute at the optimal time. When I was a kid, I was bullied over my skin color. Somehow certain kids from certain families with certain beliefs could not understand why my skin color did not match my parents'. They had no concept of what adoption could possibly be. I was told my skin was dirty; that if I scrubbed it hard enough, it would get clean and I would look like my parents, and lots of other colorful ideas on how to help my "situation," or to alienate me because of it. When I got to high school, I decided that experience would no longer have an effect on my life or thoughts. And it hasn't, for a long, long time until this weekend brought to light the terrifying possibility that there are MILLIONS of people who would still agree with what I was told when I was 4. And the scar I have from almost believing them is burning with anger and I will NOT stand to see this in the country I grew up in. I WILL have a voice about this and it is to say that famous quote, that unfortunately, I am still hoping to live in a society where people are not judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character. This is 2017. 💔
