You let the door swing hard against the wall when you entered the Tipsy Bison. Luckily the music was loud, and spirits were high, so no one seemed to notice.
You scanned the crowded building, swallowing against your dry throat as you moved past the stage where the band was playing a catchy old song. You spotted the familiar faces of your friends as Ellie wave you over.
"We were wondering if you were ever gonna show up" Ellie teased, pointing her finger at you while holding her glass, as you slid into the booth next to Jesse, who was sitting quietly nursing a beer.
"Here I am" You declared, tucking your hair behind your ear, hoping they wouldn't notice your flushed face. You looked to Jesse's hand wrapped around his glass, "You gonna drink that?"
Instead of answering, he slid the glass across the tabletop to you. You brought it your mouth and downed it in one big gulp, wiping your mouth when you were finished.
"Where's Alex?" Dina asks, wearing a confused look at your demeanor, "He's not coming?"
"Oh, he's coming all right," You muttered, sitting the glass back down against the wood with a heavy thud.
"What does that mean?" Ellie asked, exchanging confused looks with your friends at the table.
"It means I just caught him cheating on me" You let out a pitiful laugh trying your best to keep the water works at bay, fidgeting with the sleeves of your sweater.
"What?" Dina smacks the table in surprise, and you jump, looking to her, "Wait—what do you mean?"
"I stopped by his place to see how he was feeling," You explained, taking a breath before continuing, "And he was there with some red head"
Everyone knew that Alex had been 'sick' for the last couple of days. Hiding out in his house on the edge of town and refusing to let anyone check on him, under the guise of not wanting to pass on his sickness. You obeyed his wishes but, as his girlfriend of nearly two years, you became worried.
"Who was it?" Ellie's jaw fell open as she pressed her palms to the table. Her and Dina were watching you from across the table with expectant eyes. Jesse had still not made a sound though you could feel his stare on you, watching as you continued.
You set your elbows on the table, rubbing your face. You really didn't want to cry in front of them about this, but you felt pathetic. "She's from the group that stopped from California"
You all knew the group well. You were often assigned with patrols and helping people get settled into Jackson. This group was only staying for a couple of weeks before embarking on their journey east. The woman was pretty, long red hair and freckles sprinkled across the high points of her face where the California sun hit her. She knew Alex was your boyfriend, you'd introduced the asshole to her while showing her around Jackson's downtown at the beginning of the week.
"And you're sure that he was cheating?" Ellie pressed. You tired not to take offense to the question. Had you imagined it? Had you simply mis-read the situation?
Alex was a part of your close knit group. They'd all known him as long as you had, growing up in Jackson and being around the same age. It was hard to believe he would do something like this, even if he was a dickhead the majority of the time.
"Pretty damn sure," You nod once, looking to your lap, "She was fully bent over the kitchen table, screaming his name—"
"How could he do this to you?" Dina raises her voice smacking at the table again, "I'm going to cut his fucking dick off"
You thought the same thing when you came through the back door and his head whipped in your direction, halting his thrusts. He didn't say anything, just stared at you, bewildered.
"That motherfucker" Ellie sighs, staring off at the bar as she digested the information you'd given them.
You swallow, feeling like vile was going to ride in your throat at any minute. Staring down at your lap you could see Jesse's leg bounce up and down. You felt embarrassed. Maybe you shouldn't have said anything, after all it had nothing to do with the others.
Alex was the oldest of the group. About five years older than you and Jesse, with Dina and Ellie a couple years behind. The two guys had been especially close, growing up like brothers, both orphaned and taken in by Jackson long before you came around.
Throughout your teen years you developed a crush on Alex. You liked the attention the older boy gave you, treating you like this little annoying girl. But when you hit puberty, he took notice. Suddenly it was him crushing on you. You ignored it for a long time, not wanting to mess up the group dynamic but he was a rebel, and things often got boring in town.
It didn't surprise you that Jesse was mute about the topic of conversation. He usually was when it came to Alex.
"Fuck him" Dina almost growls, already a few drinks in and a fierce protecter of her friends. She moved, nearly plowing into Ellie to let her out of the booth, "I'm gonna bring you his dick on a silver platter and then—"
"How about you just get me a drink?" You offered a small smile, watching as Ellie took her girlfriends hand, "I could use something to take my mind off all this"
Dina gave you a sad look, her anger bubbling down as she reached over the table and took your hand in yours. It meant everything to you. Then she beamed at you, "Moonshine, coming right up hot stuff!"
With the girls gone you dropped your head against the table, letting out a shaky sigh. You wished you were no bullshit like Ellie or confident like Dina but you weren't. You were sensitive and emotional, and right now you were hurting.
"I don't know why I even came here, I just didn't know where else to go" You mumbled.
You felt Jesse's hand on your back, a comforting touch that helped ground you.
"Did you know?" You asked, voice echoing under the table. The music in the building was loud but you knew he would hear you.
The thought popped into your mind as you stormed out of Alex's house. It would explain Jesse's distant behavior toward Alex, maybe he knew but didn't feel it was his place to tell you. But that wasn't like Jesse.
"What?"
You lifted your head, stray tears falling off your cheeks at the motion. Looking at him now, dark hair tucked behind his ear and brown eyes watching you closely, eyebrows pinched, "Did you know he was cheating on me?"
"Of course not," He immediately shakes his head, turning toward you slightly in the booth with his arm propped against the back of the seat, "Why would you think that?"
You sniffled, rubbing your hand over your red eyes, "You guys used to be so close"
"—You really think I would've kept something like that from you?" His tone was soft, not upset more pained as he searched your eyes.
"No," You answered, honestly.
"I would've told you if I knew" He cut you off. His voice unwavering. It solidified your trust in him. Even as kids Jesse was never able to lie to you.
"Has he always hooked up with girls from the groups passing in and out of Jackson?" You pressed, elbows against the table as you rubbed your temples.
"Yes," His jaw set, eyes flicking toward the bar before he continued, "Before you two started, it was his thing"
"Not yours?" You laughed, but nothing was funny. Of course it wasn't Jesse's thing. You turned in the booth to face him fully, the world outside of the window behind him was dark, small fires scattered to light the streets up.
He sighed, "He's always been like this"
And you knew that too. Jesse had tried to warn you when you told him you were thinking about finally giving in to Alex's advances. You didn't believe him then, too wrapped up in the attention you were getting and how exciting it all felt.
The space between the two of you was calm despite the amount of people and sound swirling all around.
You had a hard time hiding your emotions around Jesse, especially when he seemed to read your mind, always knowing what you were thinking.
His gaze softened. "Are you okay?"
"No," You shake your head, lip quivering. You desperately wanted to break down, "Not really"
"Let me to take you home" He offered, more of a question, voice low as he watched a few more stray tears roll down your face. He was reaching out to swipe them away when you jumped at Dina's voice.
"Alright bitches, it's time to get drunk" She cheered with Ellie in tow as she carried a large pitcher of what you assumed was moonshine and 4 glasses.
You gave Jesse a forced smile, hurriedly wiping at your wet cheeks with your sleeve before turning back to sit normally at the table.
Two hours and too much moonshine later had you feeling relaxed. Your nerves had settled enough to find yourself giggling at Dina's exaggerated story. You weren't sure how she was still able to throw herself around in the booth considering she had been drinking long before you had even arrived. Your cheeks warm and the headache you had was taking a back seat for the time being.
At some point you had moved closer to Jesse, the right side of your body bumping into him every time you moved. He didn't seem to mind as he swirled the liquid in his glass, adding details to Dina's story, that'd he'd heard a million times. He'd been nursing the same glass of moonshine, sipping on it every now and then.
"I swear to god I had this infected fucker right in front of me and I never saw—" Dina's story suddenly stopped as her eyes tracked something behind you and Jesse, near the door, "Oh perfect, just the motherfucker I wanted to see"
Your heart sunk, turning in the booth to see Alex looking around the building, the same way you had when you first came in. You spun back around to face your friends, hoping he hadn't seen you, "I really don't want to talk to him right now"
Dina moved to push Ellie out of the booth, but was stopped with Ellie's firm hand on her thigh, settling her down slightly.
"You don't have to do anything" Jesse assured, watching him walk to the bar and grab a drink.
"He's going to try and sit with us," Ellie leaned over the table slightly so you could hear her over the music, "Do you wanna just leave?"
Maybe it was the alcohol talking but you shook your head. Alex didn't own the place and you'd be damned if you let him make you feel uncomfortable in a place where you and your friends spent most of your nights.
"Here," Jesse spoke low, sitting back against the booth to make room between himself and the edge of the table, "Swap me"
"What?"
"Swap me places" Jesse insisted, nodding at the space like an invitation. It wasn't very big and you already drunk but you listened. You tried to move across him quickly but ended up falling over, your knees hitting hard against the bottom of table and hands catching yourself on Jesse's thighs.
You mumbled an apology as you felt his hands on your waist, firm but gentle as he helped you the rest of the way across. You had just sat in Jesse's previous spot, trying to act normal when you heard the agitating voice.
"Well well guys, I didn't know we were having a drinking night," Alex addressed the whole table with a drink in hand before zeroing in on you, "Hey babe"
He was acting normal, cool persona and douchey smirk that he always seemed to wear. You on the other hand were nervous, heartbeat picking up and the urge to bolt out of the restaurant was strong. You briefly wondered if you could jump out of the booth without hitting Jesse in the face and run.
No one responded, the three keeping quiet for your sake as you stared at your cup on the table.
"Long day huh? I get it" He sighed after a beat of silence. You could still feel his eyes burning a hole through you as you crossed your arms and leaned your head against the back of the booth, "Anyways, I came to check on my girl"
Your blood went cold and you could feel someone kick at, who you assumed was. Dina as she moved to stand out of the booth.
He must've been unbothered at the looks Dina and Ellie were undeniably shooting his way. When you still didn't look at him, he said you name, "Can we talk?"
"She doesn't wanna talk to you man" Ellie spat his way and you glanced toward her hand on the table.
You heard your name fall from his lips again. There was a clink that followed as he set his beer on the edge of the table. When you finally looked in his direction he had both hands flat against the table, leaning down slightly, "You gonna ignore me all night?"
His short blonde hair was pushed back off his forehead, slicked back as if he'd just gotten out of the shower. The thought of him showering with the girl after what you'd seen made your stomach turn.
You looked away, the threat of tears stinging your eyes again as you blinked, looking out toward the dark night.
"Baby I'm sorry, okay? Can you at least let me explain myself?" Alex spoke, aware at this point that you had already told the others, judging by their overall demeanor.
"You know you're a real piece of shit coming in here—" Dina raised her voice, trying to stand from the table again as Ellie held onto her arm.
"Enough" Jesse spoke calmly to Dina, before looking at Alex. You were glad Jesse was stepping in, he had a way of calming down tense situations, "Listen man, she clearly doesn't wanna talk to you right now, so why don't you go—"
"Clearly," Alex mocks, interrupting, "Well, clearly you need to fuck off"
"Alex" Jesse spoke again, this time more of a warning.
You look over again, seeing the way Alex is staring daggers at you before looking to Jesse, "You think you can speak for her all of a sudden?"
Alex was getting upset. Sounding vaguely similar to the nights he drank too much and got too loud with you in the confines of his house.
"Seriously dude," Ellie was raising her voice now, "Why don't you just give her some fuckin' space?"
"—Why don't you mind your own fucking business?" He bit back. Everyone sitting at the table knew how Alex was when he was mad. He was an aggressive guy when he wanted to be, "And while you're at it control your bitch"
Dina opened her mouth but before she could get out her words Jesse was standing up, pushing Alex away from the table.
Alex might have had him on age but it was nothing compared to Jesse's size. He had surpassed Alex in height by the time he was 18.
All Alex did was smirk, fully squaring up and bumping his chest against Jesse, "Oh big man, do we have a problem?"
"You need to stop," Jesse replied, "Get out of here"
From your position you could see Jesse's shoulders tense and the evil smirk on Alex's face growing. A look you knew too well. You turned in the booth fully, moving to the edge where Jesse had been moments ago.
"Fuck man, you really need to learn to mind your own fucking business" Alex grunted as he moved against Jesse shoving him back against the table. The glasses fell over at the force and you wanted to scream.
In a flash, you had jumped from your spot, moving between the two, back to Jesse and hand in the middle of Alex's heaving chest.
You were glad that the music was loud enough to drown out what was happening. The surrounding tables and people standing were too busy to care what was going on.
"Outside," You demanded, face as hard as stone but he didn't look at you. He only stared over your head at Jesse, before knocking your hand off of him, "Now, I'll be out in a minute"
When Alex did finally look at you there was nothing in his eyes. The same look that he got when he raged at you in the privacy of his house.
You'd known the look too well after being on the receiving end more times than you could count.
He nodded, licking his lips and rolling his shoulders before reaching around you to take his beer from the table. He took a long sip, staring at Jesse over the glass before walking away.
"You sure that's a good idea?" Ellie asked still sitting next to Dina watching as Alex made his way through the people and out the main door.
"Probably not," You laughed dryly, rubbing at your temples. Your head was spinning again and the adrenaline of almost seeing the two fight had you tense. You looked to Jesse who was still standing next to you, "It's okay, I'll handle him"
You didn't want him getting involved. It was a pointless fight especially when you were more than over Alex at this point. You'd go outside, let him talk his shit and send him home.
He searched your eyes as you addressed the rest of the table, "I'll be right back, everyone just cool down"
The cold air hit you in the face as you pushed open the heavy door. It was dark besides the interior lights of the Tispy Bison spilling through the big windows. It illuminated Alex as he paced the area to the side of the building.
"What do you want?" Your voice echoed slightly in the empty street. From inside you could hear the muffled music from the band.
"I want to talk"
"So talk" You quipped with expectant eyes, trying to shrug off the cold as you pulled your sweater sleeves down over your wrists.
Inside, past the frosted glass you could see that Jesse had sat back down at the booth. Alex must've clocked the glance at your friends because he was moving toward you, reaching to touch your hand.
You recoiled, moving your hand away, "Talking does not require touching"
"Baby, I'm sorry that you saw that—"
A low laugh escaped, "—The only thing you're sorry about is that fact that I caught you"
He didn't react to your words, only moved toward you again. You took another step away, stumbling from the drinks you had.
"You know I never meant to hurt you. I just—well I don't know what came over me"
You laughed again, looking at one of the barrels further down the street and the flames that danced.
"Are you done?"
"No," He advanced toward you again. "I wanna fix this"
"This?" You echo, hand motioning clumsily between the two of you, "There is no fixing this. After all the shit you put me through?"
"Babe—"
"How many times?" You pressed, this time standing your ground and pushing him away when he tried to reach out to you again.
"Listen baby, I know you're mad at me right now but—"
"Stop calling me that," You shouted, pushing at his chest hard to get him away from you, "It's over"
He set his jaw, the same smirk as before crossed his lips. It made you shiver the way he could change so completely in seconds.
"You know I tried to be nice about this" He chuckled, moving toward you again, "But then you go and run your mouth and make me the bad guy"
You backed away again, now realizing he'd been getting you away from the door to the bar with each step he took toward you. You stumble again as he catches your wrists in a tight grip and hauls to against him.
"You're drunk, you're acting like a child" His hot breath and spit hit you in the face. You tried to get loose but he kept you tight against him.
"Let me go" You spit back through gritted teeth, thrashing to get free.
"I don't have to listen to you" He mutters, tightening the grip on your wrists before leaning in closer to your face.
You cocked your head back, spitting as you moved so it would hit him with somewhat force. He reacted quickly, wiping at his eye before grabbing your face with his free hand, "You're gonna regret that"
You were too caught up in the moment to hear the music become clear before going back to the muffled sound. For a moment you thought you were hearing things.
"Get the fuck off her" Jesse's voice was loud, yelling as the of his boots crunched on the gravel.
"She's drunk," Alex called over your shoulder, starting to drag you away from the bar. "I'm going to take her home so she can sleep it off"
"No you're not" Jesse argued, catching up and reaching for his shoulder.
Alex did let you go, long enough to spin around and face Jesse. You rubbed at your wrists, red marks wrapping all the way around them.
"I already told you to mind your own fucking business" Alex screamed and you were surprised no one inside heard it, "You're always sticking your nose where it doesn't belong"
Alex whipped around again, grabbing only your right wrist and holding it up. The grip he had was tighter now, ripping you around by the wrist like a rag doll.
"Jesse it's fine" You cry as he takes a step forward, thinking too hard about how badly Alex had beaten the last guy he fought, "It's okay"
"You heard her," Alex laughed, pulling you hard against him as he gripped your face again and kissed the side of your mouth. Tight lipped you watched Jesse, standing only a couple feet away, "Fuck off"
Dina and Ellie were standing behind him and when they moved closer Alex dug his fingers into the thin skin making you cry out.
"Let me go, okay?" You cried out, trying to peel his fingers off again, "You're hurting me"
In the blink of an eye Jesse was standing in front of you, managing to break the grip that Alex had.
But before you could even fully comprehend what happened, Alex had already cocked his arm back and sent a hard punch to Jesse's face.
"You son of a bitch" You screamed through gritted teeth, watching Jesse react to the hit before lunging at Alex and sending a hard slap to his face.
The next thing you felt was a stinging heat over the left side of your face. A deafening crack in the quiet night. The momentum of his Alex's backhand mixed with the alcohol in your blood sent you flying to the gravel.
You weren't exactly sure what was happening next. When you lifted yourself from the ground you could see Jesse was on top of Alex, landing blows to his body as he tried to fight back.
They were only a couple feet away from you, grunting sounds accompanying the sick sound of his fist making contact with skin. Dina and Ellie appeared at your side out of thin air, helping you sit up.
The side of face was throbbing under your hand and you felt something wet tickling your cheek. The alcohol was not helping the panic you were feeling as Ellie rushed over and hauled Jesse off of Alex who had stopped fighting back about four hits ago.
Dina moved into your line of sight and gingerly took your face in her hands. It startled you, causing you to flinch before you realized what she was trying to do, "It's okay sweetie, I need you to move your hand so I can check on that, okay?"
You nodded, moving your hand and watching her reaction. Dina was stone cold but her eyes didn't lie. Fingers pressed the skin and she lifted the bottom of her shirt to dab something away. You thought it might have been tears until you saw the blood spots. You winced at the pressure and she sucked at her teeth.
"I'm sorry," It was a wonder she was able to stand up straight after the amount of alcohol she'd consumed, let alone tend to you as carefully as she was, "Are you okay?"
You didn't respond, quite literally in shock at what had happened. Instead, you looked over to see Alex lying on the ground, facing the other direction and making a strange sound.
Dina pulled a piece of cloth from her pocket and held it against your eye, moving your hand to take her place, "Keep pressure on that"
Then she was standing, moving pass Jesse and sending a hard kick to Alex's side. He yelled out in pain before going silent again.
"Motherfucker" She screams, trying to rush him again. Ellie pulled her back and when she manages to get her back, she cries out, "He could've blinded her"
You do your best to ignore what's happening, wishing you could disappear, squeezing your eyes shut.
You heard speak quieter and tried to listen despite your pounding headache.
"His ring sliced right under her eye, any higher and—" She took a breath to collect herself, before continuing, "The bleeding should stop on its own but she's going to be bruised. There's no hiding that from Tommy," Dina points out the obvious before addressing Jesse, "and it won't be too hard to figure out who was involved"
Tommy had strict rules about the community and how disagreements needed to be handled. He'd given multiple lectures about Jackson not being the Wild West.
"I'll talk to Tommy" Jesse mumbled, before crouching down beside you, "I'm going to help you stand okay?"
His hand on your shoulder caused you to jump again. You nodded, using your free hand to grip onto his arm as he lifted you to your feet.
He was speaking to you, mouth moving as he searched your eyes. You had to force yourself to tune in to his words, "I'm going to take you home, okay"
You nodded, hand still using his arm to keep yourself steady as he started to guide you.
"Leave him there" Jesse called back to the girls as they looked at Alex still on the gravel and now holding his side where Dina had kicked him.
Jesse didn't try to speak to you on the walk, which you were glad about. It gave you the chance to regulate your nervous system and try to piece together everything that had happened in such a short amount of time.
You did as Dina said, keeping the cloth pressed against your cheek, despite the heat radiating from it. Jesse kept an arm around you, letting you use him as support.
The stars scattered across the night sky and you wanted to laugh at how pretty it was after such a hectic situation. But you didn't, you just let Jesse lead you down the dirt path to your home.
He held the door open for you as you made your way inside. He moved around you in the dark before finding the lamp you kept near the living room. It produced a warm, orange glow as he moved to the kitchen.
You followed him, sitting at the small table near the sink, not sure what else to do. You propped your elbow against the old wood top and rested your face against the palm of your hand.
You listened to the sound of Jesse walking around, opening drawers and cabinets and let your eyes close.
When you opened them again, Jesse was pulling another chair from the table and bringing it closer to you. He dropped a bag and wet cloth to the table top before sitting down.
"What're you doing?"
He didn't really have to explain what he was doing. He rummaged through a small clear bag. It was somewhat of a first aid kit, something Tommy put together for people on patrols to keep with them. You preferred keeping it around the house, usually tucked away in the bathroom drawer. Jesse only knew where it was because he'd already gotten onto you about not keeping it in your patrol bag.
"Okay," His voice was just barely above a whisper, "You can move the cloth"
You had forgotten that you still had it pressed to cheek, partially covering your eye. You peeled the cloth where it had become sticky with blood and tossed it on the table before looking to him.
He stared for a moment before clearing his throat. You weren't sure exactly how bad it was but judging by everyone reactions it wasn't good.
But he kept focused, the way Jesse always did. He leaned forward in his chair, halting before pressing the clean, wet cloth to your skin, "This is going to sting a little"
You hissed when he dabbed the cut using a light pressure. The pain came rushing back and you were suddenly gripping his arm, holding it away from you.
He gave you a second, moving the rag away to see the blood that was peppering it. He moved to clean spot before putting his other hand on your knee, preparing you, "I just need to clean it up and then we're done, okay?"
You nodded watching his mouth as he spoke. He had a busted lip, a diagonal slice leaking some blood and a bruise forming on his jaw line.
"He got you with his ring too," Your fingers curled around his arm again as he moved the cloth. Through gritted teeth you asked, "Does it hurt?"
The room stayed quiet as he distracted himself with your wound, pretending he didn't hear you. You stared at him, unrelenting until he had to meet your gaze, "No"
"You're a horrible liar"
"Has he done this to you before tonight?" Jesse asked, voice soft as he furrowed his brows, tentatively moving the subject from himself.
"No," You whispered, dropping your gaze from his. Then, in the silence of the empty home and no pressure to keep up a lie, you sighed, "Well, yeah, but never like this"
Jesse's eyes flicked to yours before looking back to the cut he was nursing. His way of telling you to continue, "He came close a couple of times when he would drink"
You took a breath, dropping your hand from his arm, no longer focusing on the pain in your face, "He always apologized after, blamed it on the booze or the day"
His set his jaw as he dropped the rag onto the table beside you. He searched the bag for a moment before pulling out a bandage. You didn't say anything else, just watched him fiddle with the wrapping.
He leaned forward again, using soft touch to smooth it over the wound, "I'm sorry"
"It's okay," You blinked, feeling numb, "It doesn't hurt that bad"
"No, I mean, for making you think you couldn't tell me" He says simply, leaning back in his chair and starting to gather the medical supplies back in the bag. Then he adds, "You could've told me"
You reached out and grabbed the wet cloth from the table, flipping it to a clean side before scooting to the edge of the chair. Jesse's long legs on either side of your chair.
You reached out and caught his chin with your thumb using it to make him look at you. He complied, setting the medical supplies down and letting his hands rest on his thighs.
The blood was smeared across his mouth where he had rubbed it, a small amount of blood still seeping from the slice.
You kept your fingers under his chin as you applied pressure to his bottom lip with the other, "For the record I should have told you, or anyone, I know that"
He stared at you as you tentatively wipe at his lip, speaking despite, "Why didn't you?"
You let out a small sigh, "I just didn't want to get you involved. You would've called him out and he loves to fight; I knew this would be the outcome"
"So instead you stayed with a guy who was getting drunk and hitting you" It was posed as a question but it wasn't; it was an accusation.
"It stopped everyone else from fighting" Your face was burning under his gaze, another wave of embarrassment hitting you. You caught sight of the bruise on his jawline and tears pricked your eyes, "I feel so bad for all this"
"Hey," Jesse touched your wrist moving the cloth away from his mouth so he could speak clearly, "There's no reason for you to feel bad"
"Jesse, look at you," You rubbed at your eye, sucking in a sharp breath when you accidentally touched your cheek. You picked up his hand, showing him his own knuckles, cut and bruised from his punches, "This is all my fault"
He was standing suddenly, his wooden chair scratching across the floor. He took the cloth from your hand and tossed it on the table before hauling you to your feet. Without a sound he took your hand and made you follow him.
Before you knew it you were standing in the bathroom and he was flipping the light switch. The bright light stung your eyes even more than in the kitchen as you tried to blink the soreness away.
When they had finally adjusted enough you realized you were standing in front of the counter looking at your reflection in the mirror. Jesse was standing behind you holding you in place with his hands on your arms.
"It's okay to be upset, but I want you to realize what he did to you" Jesse's voice echoed in the small bathroom as he pointed at your now covered wound under your eye, "This—"
His finger pointed to your cheek below where the skin was starting to turn color. "—And this"
You didn't say anything, just watched him move in the reflection as he picked up both of your hands, his chest pressing against the back of your shoulder as his long arms moved in front of you, "And this"
You hadn't realized it before but your wrists had a dark bruising wrapped fully around them. The force of his grip now visible on your pale skin.
You moved your hands away from him, bringing them closer to you, examining the marks. He had backed up, leaning against the doorframe as he watched you through the mirror. The hum of the light bulb was the only sound echoing in the space.
You pressed your palms against the cold countertop of the skin and sighed, catching another glimpse of the dark under your eyes before dropping your shoulders. Your vision became blurred with tears as you took your bottom lip between your teeth and glanced to the side of pane where Jesse still stood.
It was all you could do to shake your head, before the dam broke and tears were rushing down your cheeks.
Jesse was right there, turning you around to face him and pulling you against his chest, arms wrapping around your frame. Your hands gripped at his shirt, tears soaking the fabric.
"It's okay" He muttered, lips against the top of your head as his hands rubbed soothing circles on your back. His strong arms enveloping you whole, "None of this is your fault"
"It is. I should've never of went to the bar after seeing him with that girl and none of this would've happened" You spoke directly against his chest, "You wouldn't have gotten into a fight with him and no one would—"
Jesse cut you off, dropping his arms and backing up so he could look at you clearly, "No one would what? Know that he was doing this to you behind closed doors? Cheating on you?"
His hands were holding your face, keeping you looking at him, "How much longer would you have let him treat you like this?"
"I don't know" You shrugged pathetically, tears falling on to his thumbs as he tried to wipe them away, "All I know is when he hit you it was the first time it all came to the surface. When I realized how much I truly hated him"
"Why?" Jesse pressed as you stepped out of his grasp and leaned back again the counter.
"Don't ask me why," You wiped at your wet face, pushing the hair out of your eyes, "I don't know what the fuck is wrong with me"
"Nothing is wrong with you," Jesse whispered your name, despite being in close proximity, "I don't think you realize what I'd do for you"
You both stared at each other, as if daring the other one to look away first, but no one budged. Stood there frozen in time.
For a long time you weren't sure what it was about Jesse. Why you felt so comfortable with him or why he became distant when you and Alex started dating. You wondered if he knew that you noticed the way his eyes would linger or how he would flex his hands when he was near you, like he wanted to reach out and touch you.
Or if he knew that despite being one of your closest friends, you had always had feelings for him. And you weren't sure if it was the moonshine still present in your body or the events that transpired that had you reaching out to him.
You caught his hand, running your fingertips across the broken, discolored skin before pulling it ever so slightly toward you.
He shuffled forward, close enough that you can see the wetness your tears caused on his shirt. You touched the fabric and the air suddenly changed in the room. A sort of charged electricity sparked between the two of you as you looked up at him.
You let your fingers drag up the length of his arm, all the way to the side of his neck where it stayed as you stood up on your tip toes. His breath hitched in his throat and you pulled him down to meet you halfway.
You expected him to make a move, close what little space was left between you, but he didn't. Instead, his hands dropped to your waist and he lifted you to sit on the counter.
This position was much easier, he didn't have to bend at the neck and you didn't have to stand on your toes to reach him. But he still didn't kiss you.
He watched you, face softening as he searched your eyes. You opened your legs, so he could stand comfortably in front of you as your feet hung down.
You moved your hand to cup his cheek, thumb grazing over his fat lip. He didn't react when you touched it despite the small drop of blood that was pooling around the edge of the cut.
"Your poor lip" You whispered, distracted by the swollen redness, watching it roll under your soft touch. You leaned forward agonizingly slow, still testing the waters as he watched you. He whispers your name, as smooth as butter.
You can feel his hand on your thigh, thumb tapping nervously against the material of your jeans. You swallow hard, trying to steady your heartbeat as you lean forward, the space between your faces nearly gone, "Kiss me"
When he did finally close the space, you tilted your head, his soft lips sealed against yours. You felt his hand flex against your thigh but he still didn't move it.
He pulled back almost immediately, saying your name again as you chased his lips. Before he could speak again you were pulling him back to you.
You smiled when you felt his hand move from your thigh, gliding up your arm to touch your face. The feeling leaving a trail of fire in its wake as he tilted his head and kissed you back.
The metallic taste of the blood from his lip was addicting as you pressed closer, kissing at his bottom lip gently as your other hand moved to cup his cheek.
"Is this okay?" He said against your lips as you hooked your finger in his belt loop and tugged him closer, his hips hitting the side of the counter with a soft thud.
You nodded, not trusting your voice as you carded your fingers through his hair. At the confirmation his lips moved against you in a more desperate manner, his body reacting to your touch. He touched your chin, moving your head back so he could kiss deeper.
You parted his lips with your tongue, too impatient to wait for him. He let you in without hesitation, letting you explore his mouth.
You were getting drunk all over again just from tasting him.
You hummed against his lips, feeling a sense of success when he moved his tongue against yours, returning the act and delving into you. You hooked your legs around his waist as you leaned back against the mirror. The pure pleasure you were feeling at just the feeling of his mouth on yours was driving you crazy.
His hands dropped to your lower back, bringing you close to the edge of the counter before fully picking you up off the counter. His hands held the back of your thighs as your arms hooked around his neck.
You walked with ease, never taking his lips from yours as he walked down the hallway. You weren't surprised, he had been in your house countless times, and even being preoccupied it had been second nature.
He left the light off as he entered your bedroom, the moonlight leaking through the window pane as he put a knee on the mattress. You hadn't even noticed he was laying you down until you felt the pillow behind your head.
He was hovered above you, your arms not letting him go anywhere as you continued to swirl your tongues, but then he was breaking the kiss.
"What's wrong?" You asked, breathlessly loosening your hold on his neck. Your heat was thumping your ears, "Did I do something wrong?"
"You didn't do anything wrong," He sighed, carefully removing your hands from his neck so he could sit up on the bed beside you, "I just think you should go to sleep"
You sat up in the bed, opposite his position, utterly stunned. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
"Did I misread this?"
Jesse was nervous, in a way you had never seen him before, rubbing at the back of his neck and trying to not make eye contact with you.
"Oh my god" You cried out, hands covering your face as you brought your knees to your chest, "I'm so goddamn stupid"
"No, no you're not stupid" Jesse said softly, still keeping his distance from you on the edge of the mattress.
"I am," You cried out again, lifting your head from your hands, to look at him, "You're my best friend. And Fuck—I thought we had this tension or something and—and I fucked up everything just now"
He opened his mouth to speak again but you threw your head against the headboard with a soft thud, "—Jesus I practically forced myself on to you, shoving my tongue down your throat and—"
Jesse sighed, watching you spiral and shaking his head slightly, "You have such a unique way of misunderstanding things"
"I'm not misunderstanding, I crossed a line and I should have never—" Jesse leaned over to you again, shutting you up with a kiss.
It was gentle and quick, unlike the previous one you had just shared. His lips pressed against yours and gone before you had a chance to react. He succeeded in stopping your rambling.
"Don't—" You sighed, snapping yourself out of the moment as he sat back again, "Don't kiss me out of pity"
Jesse rolled his eyes, fully turning back toward you on the bed, pushing you back gently until your back rested against the headboard.
He angled your face up toward his so he had a better position to kiss you. This time he was the one leaning in slow, making you wait in anticipation. He peeked your lips once before parting your lips, running his tongue along the seam of your mouth. He was using more pressure than before, hands on either side of you.
You sighed into the kiss, tasting the saltiness of your stray tears mixing with his salvia. When he felt your hands slide across the plane of his shoulders and interlock behind his neck he knew you were finally understanding.
"You had a really rough night," He pulled back, breath fanning over your face as he tucked a strand of hair behind your ear, "And you've been drinking"
"It doesn't matter" You whine, not caring how desperate it made you sound.
"It does—to me it does," He leaned in and peck you on the lips between each work he spoke, "I don't want to take advantage of you"
"What if I take advantage of you?" You joke, leaning back in to kiss him as he pulled away, teasing you.
"I think you should get some sleep" He whispered, "And see how you feel about this tomorrow"
"Jesse, I promise you this isn't me being clouded with emotions. It's me finally having the guts to tell you how I feel"
He stood up, grabbing your foot and removing your shoes, "How do you feel?"
You watched him, gently tossing the shoes to the floor, looking at his lips that you had already become familiar with.
"Like I've been waiting for a night like this for years"
He dropped your legs back on the mattress, moving back toward you and resting his knuckles into the bed. He hovered above you for a moment before pressing a another quick kiss to your lips, "That makes two of us"
The loss of contact was making your head spin. He turned to your drawers, sliding it open and fishing out a t shirt that you often slept in.
"You're joking" You accused, sitting up fully in the bed, intrigued by his words. You peeled your long sleeve sweater over your head and tossed it to the floor.
"Not joking" He whispered, trying to not look at you in just your bra as you took your time putting on the shirt he had tossed at you.
When it was on you sighed, sitting up on your knees and unhooking the bra under the shirt. When it came loose you tossed that on the floor too. He had averted his eyes to your desk, littered with random trinkets you had collected.
"Will you stay with me?" You asked, gathering your hair to one shoulder as you watched him.
"I really think I should—"
"I just don't wanna be alone tonight?" You interrupt, touching the bruises on your wrist, a reminder of how long the night had already been.
"I'll stay," He said, earning a small smile from you, "But I'm going to sleep on the couch"
You let out an audible groan that made Jesse chuckle. He nodded at you, moving quietly to the door. Before he left he turned back to look at you, "I'll be out here when you wake up"
Then he was gone, leaving you on the bed in the dim light.
You stood from the bed, slipping out of your jeans with a frustrated huff. You pulled on a pair of old sleep shorts and threw yourself back onto the bed, staring at the ceiling.
You tried to push out any negative thoughts of what you had done, initiating whatever just happened between the two of you. Why did you have a pit in your stomach, especially after Jesse had just admitted he had felt the same way for you.
You rolled onto your side, wiping at your face feeling the fabric of the bandage. You thought about Jesse's lip again, the way his knuckles looked.
You closed your eyes, feeling the events of the night weighing you down into the soft mattress. Outside of the closed door you could hear Jesse's footsteps on the creaky wood floors, the sound of the lock switching on your front door. It eased your anxieties knowing he was there, even if you felt awkward for desperately making out with him.
With the blanket pulled to your chin, you were out in a matter of minutes. Breath evening out and your worries drifting off into the night.
You shot up in bed, your wrists feeling as if they were breaking and hot fire streaked across your face. You breath was rapid, heart pounding in your chest. You clutched the fabric of your shirt, urging yourself to calm down.
It had taken several minutes for you to realize that you were in your bed and had been dreaming, though you felt as though you could feel Alex's presence in the room, suffocating you.
You wasted no time, grabbing your pillow and blanket, rushing out of the room and down the hall. In the dark living room you could see Jesse stretched out on the couch, his arm folded behind his head on the arm rest. His chest rising and falling as he slept peacefully.
You watched him for a moment, clutching the pillow to your chest. Deciding it was stupid to wake him before taking a step back to your room.
He called your name, voice thick with sleep at the sound of the wood creaking under your weight, "Are you okay?"
You let out a shaky breath, quiet in the room but somehow, he had still managed to hear it.
"C'here" He said, shifting on the couch.
You crossed the room quickly, gesturing for him to sit up so you could put the pillow behind his head. He laid back against it as you crawled over top of him, nestling yourself in the space between the couch cushions and him.
You spread the blanket over the two of you as he adjusted to give you more room, moving his arm so you could lay your head lay against him. When you finally stopped moving you let out a breath, "I'm sorry"
"Don't be," He pressed an innocent kiss to your temple, "I've got you"
The pressure on your wrists and fire in your face seemed to disappear as you listened to his breathing in the quiet space. The dream had left you more scared than the moment.
Just when you thought you might fall back asleep, you spoke again, "I knew he was cheating on me"
"How long?"
"A couple months" You sighed, "I caught him in the stables with a girl a while back, somehow I let him convince me I didn't see what I saw. I was too scared to do anything about it, but in reality, I think I felt stuck in the situation"
He made a sound next you, moving his feet under the blanket so they brushed against your cold bare feet, "You don't have to be stuck anymore"
You smiled, turning carefully to look at him face to face. Even in the dark you could see his fat lip. You leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek before laying your head on his chest, letting your arm fall across his stomach.
Then after a beat you asked, "How come you never said anything before?"
"The same reason you didn't" He sighed, wrapping that arm around to hold you against him, "Thought it would ruin us"
"Do you still think it will?"
He smiled, a hand coming up to play with your hair, and in a soft tone he spoke again, "Maybe"
"Too late now" You yawned, cuddling closer into him as you a peaceful sleep washed over you with no fear of the nightmares returning as long as he had you in his arms.

The snowflakes fell relentlessly, collecting into piles on the railing of your porch. It was late, the snow sparkling from the small light that illuminated Jesse. Who stood just outside the open door, white flakes sticking to his hat. The wind picked up as he adjusted the logs in his arms.
"Are you insane or stupid?" You gape, reaching for the fabric of his coat and pulling him into the house, shutting the door before any more of the cold came in.
"Hello to you too," He said, moving across your living room and placing the armful of logs in front of the fireplace, "The storms getting worse"
"You don't say," You nod, crossing your arms over your hoodie as he stood straight again. He dusted his hands in the front of his jeans before turning back toward you, "How'd you know I was running low?"
"Just a hunch" He smirked, bringing his hands to his mouth and blowing hot air against them as he made his way back to the door where you stood.
A hunch.
Jesse's own sweet way of saying he knew you'd forgotten, the way you always did and he didn't want you to freeze during the night.
His cheeks were crimson red, spreading over his nose. His hat and coat visibly wet from the snow that had melted while he was standing near the fire place.
"I would've been fine for tonight," You chewed at your lip, "I wish you wouldn't have gone through the trouble—"
"—It's no trouble," He assured, his eyes flicking over your features before continuing, "Really–uh, I was already out delivering wood to some other houses"
He looked back over at the fireplace, noticing the fabric on the floor but before he could ask, you were taking a step closer to him.
"Well, I better be the last house," You say sternly, uncrossing your arms and reaching out to touch his face with the back of your hand, "Damnit Jesse, you're as cold as ice"
"I promise you're the last house," Jesse said amused at your reaction to his temperature, "But I need to head back to town and finish up some work for Tommy before—"
"Do you ever tell that man no?" You interrupt with a roll of your eyes. You knew he wouldn't answer that, so instead you sighed, "Take your things off"
"That's okay," He cleared his throat, watching as you closed the book you'd been reading when he arrived and sat it on the table, "It's not as cold as it looks out there"
He tried to stifle his laugh at the look you gave him as you moved towards the kitchen, calling over your shoulder, "Would you please just sit your ass by the fire?"
It wasn't a question, instead a light hearted command that you'd hoped he would follow. Any more time out there and he would surely be sick. A sick Jesse is not something you wanted on your conscious.
When you returned to the room his coat was hung up near the door, dripping onto the wood. His boots sat with clumps of snow still smushed around the soles.
He had made his way to your fireplace, now crouched down and carefully arranging the wood he'd brought in so it was stacked against the wall neatly and out of your way.
Your creaky floorboards made his head snap toward you, "Are you planning on sleeping down here tonight?"
You nodded, carrying two cups of hot coffee as you walked across the expanse of pillows and blankets that were arranged in front of the fireplace, "It's warmer down here"
It wasn't just the cold of the snow storm that kept you in the living room. Jesse knew that most nights you'd sleep on the couch or floor instead of the mattress upstairs. You felt ashamed to have such a large house to yourself, especially when you weren't used to the luxury of a bed before arriving in Jackson.
"Drink this" You requested, as you sat on the plush blankets and he took the spot next you. The contained fire danced across the logs as you sat in a comfortable quiet. After a few minutes you looked over to him, "Thanks for bringing the extra wood"
"It's no big deal" He sighed, leaning back on his outstretched hand as he took a sip from the mug. Classic Captain Wyoming. Nothing was ever too hard or an inconvenience to him. Always willing to lend a helping hand. Over the short years you'd known him you noticed he had this habit with you. From bringing firewood to teaching you how to shoot to getting you out of your comfort zone.
Another beat passed as you pulled your knees to your chest, "What did you need to do for Tommy?"
"We've been trying to get some new routes for patrols, he wants me to map out some areas for scouting" He sipped on the coffee, watching the fire in front of you. You were pleased to see some of his normal color coming back.
Patrols.
You'd been begging to be put on patrols ever since Jesse had taught you how to ride a horse. The odd jobs around Jackson weren't fulfilling in the slightest after practicing combat. Besides, you were better out there, at least you had been. Being in Jackson had made you weak in a lot of ways.
"Speaking of," You set your cup down on the small table to the side as you set your chin on the tops of your knees, wrapping your arms loosely around them, "Did you ask Tommy about putting me on the schedule?"
"Yeah—uh, he said no," He shook his head slowly, trying to not make eye contact with you, "He said you aren't ready yet"
"Mhm," You hummed, eyes flickering over his features. The sleeves of his dark shirt clung to his biceps and the jeans he wore wrinkled around the knees as he stretched his legs toward the fire. "You know, it's funny you say that– because I saw Tommy earlier and he told me that it was time to get me out there. And apparently he's been telling you for weeks"
Jesse dropped his head briefly before sneaking a look at you. His dark locks fell over his ears, a strand hanging near his eye.
"Busted" The words carried out in a tune as you watched him. He brought his free hand up and raked it through his hair. When you realized he didn't know what to say, you added, "Why'd you lie to me?"
As far as you knew he hadn't lied to you before. He was too honest about everything from the random drama of the community to secrets trusted to him from Tommy. You heard it all. It helped you had no one else that you would pass on the secrets to, just Jesse.
He shrugged, sitting his coffee next to yours on the table before adjusting slowly toward you on the blanket, "You want the truth?"
"No—please lie to me again" You deadpanned sarcastically, fingers rubbing soothingly on the material of the sweatpants you wore. You never expected Jesse to keep things for you, not when he inserted himself so easily into your day to day life. He was the one person in Jackson you would blindly follow.
"I told him you were ready, about a month ago," He watched the fire dance as he spoke, "But when I told him I wanted you on my patrols, he said he couldn't make that happen, schedules or whatever— so, I told him forget it"
"Jesse," You reached over and smacked at his arm, just enough to get across your frustration, "Why the hell would you do that?"
"If you are out there, I want you with me" He explained easily as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, "If Tommy won't guarantee that then—"
"We would still see each other between shifts" You argued, thinking that's all it was. In the current arrangement the two of you were around each other majority of the days in Jackson, when he's wasn't on patrol and you weren't washing dishes at the diner.
"No," He shook his head once, pushing himself to his knees and leaning up to place a fresh log on the fire. Little fire stars exploded before falling back into the flames. Jesse stayed with his back toward you as he sat on his knees, "It's not that"
"What is it then?" You were becoming irritated. Why did he think he could dictate how this played out? Would you prefer to be with him out there? Of course.
But you didn't want to throw away the opportunity just because you weren't getting what you wanted. You didn't have the luxury of being choosy.
"I would just rather you be on my team, that's all"
You watched his back muscles shift under his shirt, the room aglow with firelight, "What difference does it make if I'm on your patrols or Kyle's?"
You knew you shouldn't have mentioned Kyle, but he was the only other patrol leader. The only other team you'd be assigned to. If you weren't on Jesse's you would 100% be on his. This was all beginning to feel like kids picking dodge ball teams.
"You being safe and alive, or dead" Jesse said without pause, fire illuminating one side of his face as he spoke.
Kyle had recently led his patrol right into an ambush of infected and lost 4 people. People Jesse had been close with. You sighed "It wasn't like he did it on purpose, something like that could have happened to anyone–"
"The only reason they came across the infected is because he took it upon himself to take a new route," His shoulders tensed and you immediately regretted saying it. You'd known it had taken a toll on Jesse. He beat himself up for weeks over the lives lost, even though there was nothing he could've done to save them he felt responsible. He was the one who convinced Tommy to split patrol leadership with him. "He's reckless"
You didn't know that. You wondered if anyone else in town did. Kyle seemed fine, despite being reprimanded for a month, he was back in patrols as if nothing had happened. Tommy didn't exactly have the man power to spare.
Jesse moved back to his previous spot, this time leaning against the small coffee table. His expression was twisted, "If you are with me then I know you're safe, I can't promise the same if you're out there with him"
You tried to ignore the blush you felt creep up, thankful for the hoodie gathering around your neck to hide it. It felt nice to know he cared about you like that, no one ever had before.
You moved on the blankets, crossing your legs and pulling a pillow into your lap. As much as you wanted to argue that he couldn't control what you did, you couldn't. He wanted to be able to watch your back, prevent any harm from coming to you. How could you be mad at him? How you could let him bear that burden?
"Ya know, regardless of all that, it's not on you—if something were to happen to me, I mean— it wouldn't be your fault"
It felt important to say. You had no idea that he was taking so much responsibility for your life until now. It wasn't fair to him.
He nodded once, then twice before letting out a breath and pushing himself up from the floor,
"Well, I—uh, better get going if I wanna get those maps before the snow gets too deep"
"Wait," You were scrambling to stand, meeting his tall frame. "Don't—I mean, what if you stayed a while longer?"
The blush had completely moved from your neck, know spreading over your cheeks from embarrassment as he watched you. God, was he always this tall?
He smiled because you never invited him to stay. The two of you were close, but you preferred to stay closed off to a certain extent. It helped that Jesse never tried to over stay his welcome, taking his leave after walking you home or watching a movie. He never pushed.
But sometimes you wished he had.
"If you want me to" He said softly. His eyes still watched you, even as you picked up the now cold cups of coffee and motioned for him to sit back down on the pallet of blankets on the floor.
An hour had passed quickly as you talked about the book he had lent you to read. You devoured the novel within days and he listened to you recall it, amused at your reaction to the plot twist.
"I knew you'd love it" He smiled. He was lying on his side, elbow propping him up, his hair tucked back behind his ear.
You were in a similar position, lying fully on your stomach, facing him with your legs moving lazily through the air as you spoke.
The fire crackled in the background of conversation as it ate away at the log. The storm had gotten worse. A complete white out just outside the clear glass of the window. It was late now, though you didn't care.
"I have another one I think you'd like" He said, suddenly rolling over as if he was going to reach for his bag near the edge of the blankets. He stopped short, face twisting in discomfort as he let out a hiss.
"You okay?" You asked, raising an eyebrow in his direction.
"Mhm," He hummed through gritted teeth as he slowly sat up. When he realized you were staring at him he sighed, "Shimmer got spooked by a snake yesterday in the woods and bucked me off. I guess I landed weird on my shoulder"
"Jesse," You groaned, pushing yourself up to your knees and maneuvering closer to him, "Why didn't you say anything?"
He shrugged, tilting his head to the side as you moved behind him for better access. The moment you touched your fingertips against the fabric of his shirt, he flinched away.
You sucked at your teeth, reaching for the bottom of his shirt and tugging it up, "Take this off so I can look at it"
He did as he was told, moving slowly and pulling the shirt over his head by the neck. You watched it slide up, exposing the expanse of his back more and more before he had discarded it to the side.
"How does it look?" His voice sounded far away as your eyes took him in. You leaned up on your knees to get a good look at the shoulder in the dim room.
It was his left shoulder blade, bruised and casting a purple shadow on the skin.
"Looks like it hurt" You say quietly, noticing the scrapes that scattered near the area, they weren't bleeding, just red lines over his pale upper back, "Did you tell Tommy?"
You took a breath. You had seen him shirtless before. Most recently when he had taken you to a small waterfall on the edge of his patrol last summer. He'd surveyed the area for weeks making sure it was perfectly clear of infected. You remembered when he peeled his shirt from his sweaty body that you almost forgot to breathe. His tan skin glistening under the hot sun. Luckily he hadn't noticed, too busy diving into the water.
"It's not a big deal" He countered, ripping you from your thoughts.
To prove a point you reached two fingers out and poked the middle of the bruise, watching as he jerked forward taking a sharp breath.
"Mr. Goody two shoes doesn't tell people when he's hurting," You hummed, examining the bruise further, this time with light fingers brushing over the skin, "I'll add that to the list"
"What list?" Jesse pressed, amusement in his voice as he stared forward, allowing you to access him.
"The list of weird things you do," You dropped your hand to his lower back, pushing him slightly forward, "Lie down on your stomach"
Again he didn't argue, moving away from you as he pressed his stomach to the blankets on the floor. His long legs stretched out. He moved around for a moment before grabbing a pillow and bunching it in his hands, using it for support, "What else is on this list?"
"Bunch of things" You sigh, thinking for a moment, trying to ignore the way his back muscles flexed as he got comfortable.
He made a humming sound, crossing his arms near the top of his head and resting his forehead against them. He was curious and now you wished you hadn't brought it up, "Such as?"
"You volunteering in the kitchen for breakfast even when you work night patrol"
It was the most recent thing you could think of. He's done it weekly for as long as you'd known him. You often wondered how he managed staying awake at all.
"What's wrong with that?" He laughed and you watched his shoulders shake slightly.
"The fact that you don't sleep" You rolled your eyes, moving some of the extra blankets and pillows away from him, making a space for yourself.
He shook his head slightly before craning his neck to look at you over his good shoulder. As if suddenly aware of his position, he asks: "Why am I lying on the floor?"
"I'm going to give you a massage" You moved over toward him, knees grazing his side as you rubbed your hands together, hoping it would make them less cold, "I think it'll help"
"Oh you don't have to—" He cut himself off, dropping his face into the pillow as your hands found his shoulders, avoiding the bruised area and kneading the skin in your hands.
"Is that too much?" You asked, freezing your hands as you hovered on your knees.
"No, it feels good," He spoke against the pillow, before turning his head toward you so you could see the side of his face. After a couple of minutes you heard him mumble your name, "Are you mad about the patrol thing?"
You shook your head, forgetting he couldn't see your face with his eyes closed, "No, maybe, I haven't decided yet"
He opened his mouth to speak again but closed it when you moved your hands up to the back of his neck, using your fingers to massage the muscles there with a firm hand.
"You're so tense" You whispered, using your thumbs to move his tight muscles around as best you could.
He said something, but it was muffled against the pillow. You switched to your palm, pushing it up against his upper back and dragging it back down.
The position of sitting beside him proved difficult, especially as you leaned over and accidentally put your weight on his bruised shoulder blade. He immediately recoiled, letting out a string of curse words and tightening his arms above his head.
You apologized profusely, soft hands moving to his bicep, but he stopped you, sitting up slightly. "It's okay, seriously it's fine. Don't worry about it"
When you didn't reach out to him again, he lifted his upper body further, giving you a lopsided, sleepy smile, "You're really good at that"
"You think so?" You asked, genuinely. You didn't really know what you were doing but you hoped it felt good.
"I don't think I've ever felt so relaxed" He admitted with a lighthearted laugh. Your heart thumped at his words.
Jesse the guy who never took any time for himself, who was always busy and always stretching himself too thin was finally relaxing. And it was because of you. It was a high you wanted to keep riding.
"Lay back down," You instructed, moving your hair to one side as you waited for him to get comfortable again. Then without saying anything you moved to straddle him his lower back.
"Is this okay?" You whisper. He tensed slightly at the sudden closeness but didn't object as you folded your knees to keep from applying full pressure onto him, "I'll be able to get your full back this way"
He tried to speak but cleared his throat instead, "No—I mean yes, it's okay"
You hummed, leaning forward slightly to reach the top of his spine, just under his neck. You kneaded the area carefully before making your way down his spine, moving your thumbs in methodically circles.
"Fuck" He breathed, turning his head from the pillow to look over at the fireplace. The fire was still raging, producing the only like in the small area.
When you made it to the bottom of his spine you spread your fingers apart, massaging tissue right above where you hovered.
"If you don't keep me talking I'll fall asleep" You heard his voice, mixing with the crackling wood and howling wind outside.
"That's the point" You laughed softly, continuing the massage, leaning forward again to work on the tension in his shoulders.
He pressed his lips to the skin of his arm, stifling what must've been a satisfied whine before clearing his throat again, "What else is on this list?"
You smiled, rolling your eyes, knowing he couldn't see you, "That you carry a lot of stress here," You spoke softly as you dragged your fingers tips from his shoulders to his lower back, "And here"
"That's going on my list?" He asked. And from your position on his back you could see his eyes start to flutter close again as he rests his cheek against the pillow.
"Not necessarily," You whispered again, working down his back again in slow, deliberate moves, "Everyone carry's their stress there. I'm adding it because you always act so calm and collected...but our bodies don't lie"
This made him laugh. Low and gravely, the act vibrating your fingers. After a couple of seconds of silence, just when you thought he might have fallen asleep, he responds, "I had no idea I was being observed so closely"
You weren't sure how to take that. But in the spirit of relaxing you decided to not let it bother you. It was true after all, you did like to observe him. The way he spoke and acted. The way he brightened any room he walked into. The way he stared at you when he thought you weren't looking.
"Come on, give me a good one" He said, eyes opened again and body shivering as you ran your nails gently across the expanse of his back, leaving goosebumps in your wake. You lost yourself in the few healed scars that adored his skin, nails circling them in a ghost of a touch.
"When you're focused; like when you clean your gun, you always hum that one John Denver song" You shifted above him, your thighs pressing into his hips. In unison you both say, "Leaving on a jet plane"
You can hear the smile in his voice, even though he's moved his head, propping his chin on his hands and looking straight ahead at the orange light, "It was my moms favorite song, from before all this. She sang it to me all the time"
You never knew his mother but from the way he spoke about her, it felt like you did. He had a lot of little things you assumed came from her but in fear of making him too nostalgic or sad, you cleared your throat, "You don't pick up on hints when the women around here blatantly flirt with you"
The sentence fell from your lips and it was all you could do to not fully combust from embarrassment. Why would you say that?
"Blatantly flirt with me" He echoed your words, shifting slightly under you. "I wouldn't say that"
You swallowed the anxiety down, nervous fingers wringing the muscles at his shoulders again before again dragging your nails gently, this time running them toward his sides and back to the middle of his spine.
"So you're saying that you do pick up on it?" You accuse, starting to lose focus on the massage as you wait for his answer.
"Sometimes," He mumbles, then clears his throat again, "But I don't think it's that bad"
"Please" You rolled your eyes, not trying to hide your annoyance any longer but wanting to keep the lighthearted vibe, "They practically offer you their first born child"
He laughs, but only for a moment before silence falls again.
In fear of saying too much, or making things weird you stand at your knees over him and tap his back, a confirmation that you were finished.
But before you can remove yourself from him, he's turning underneath you. And in a quick motion he had managed to flip himself around, wincing slightly when his shoulder blade connected against the floor. It was less than smooth.
When he finally settled you could see him straight on, quickly realizing you were now straddling his waist, with his hands were on either side of your pant legs, steadying you.
You laugh at the moment saying something about him nearly knocking you over before he gives you a look.
"What?"
"Nothing, I just had no idea you were so jealous" He hummed, staring up at you. The pillow he had his face on was now supporting the back of his head.
Jealous? No way.
"I'm not, I just have eyes" You breathe, sitting up straighter on him, then adding harsher than intended, "Why would I care who flirts with you?"
His eyes searched yours now and a part of you wanted to slide off him; to have him pull on his boots and venture out into the blizzard. But there was a stronger part of you that kept you in place.
"I don't know" He whispered in a voice so quiet that if you weren't staring at his lips, you'd never of caught it.
You wanted to speak, but you had no idea what to say. Not when he was staring at you the way he was. Not when you were moments away from doing something you might both regret.
Before you could think anymore about it, Jesse was sitting up, pushing his upper body toward you until he was right in front of you. In the motion you had slid fully to his lap.
You still didn't move. Even when one of his hands brushed a strand of your hair behind your ear. His eyes watched you close, waiting for something. And he spoke just as breathlessly as before, "Tell me to stop"
But you didn't want him to. So instead you took your hand, dragging soft fingers up his chest and traced his collarbone. There had only been a handful of times when the two of you were this close, testing how far the line would stretch before it broke. You always backed down, too scared of the unknown, of losing the only real friend you had.
But tonight, you could feel his breath fanning over your face and the heat of his skin by the fire and something changed.
You closed the small distance between the two of you and caught his lips with your own, eyes fluttering close. He reacted by moving his hand to cup the side of your neck, letting you dictate what happened next.
His lips were soft as they moved ever so slightly to match your own pace. Your heart was thumping out of your chest and you were sure Jesse could hear it, maybe even feel it vibrating the living room . Pulling away you opened your eyes to find him already looking at you, the faintest smile pulling at the corner of his mouth.
"I made the first move," You whispered, bringing your other hand up to steady yourself on his shoulders, "It's your turn"
He nodded, unable to hold back any longer, the uncertainty giving way to pure desire in his expression. His hands come up to cradle your face as he pulls you into a deep, slow kiss. It's different from first nervous kiss you gave him—this is more intimate, needy. His tongue brushes against your lips, asking for permission before you part your lips and allow him entry.
A sound escapes from the back of your throat as he swirls his tongue against your own. Jesse exhales through his nose, letting out a small chuckle before pulling back, "You okay?"
"Yeah," You murmur, voice even quieter now, "More than okay."
He presses a kiss to your lips again—gentle at first but quickly deepening it when he feels you respond, feeling more confident. His fingers thread through your hair.
When Jesse feels you pressing into him, he lets you take the lead, tilting his head to give you better access to his mouth as he lets out a low, appreciative moan that makes your stomach twist.
His hands move to your thighs, gently guiding you down to press against him—his body already responding to the moment.
Jesse sucks in a sharp breath, his muscles tensing under your touch as you run your nails along his biceps, lost in the kiss.
He grips the material of your sweatpants, trying to keep himself from reacting too obviously—but the way his chest rises and falls faster gives him away.
You break the kiss as he chases after your lips like a man starved, watching you through heavy-lidded eyes.
He's catching your mouth again in another searing kiss—this one messier than before. His tongue slides against yours insistently, refusing to let the moment end so soon.
You plant your hands on his chest, applying pressure and pushing him back toward the floor. He understands the wordless request as he lowers himself, taking you with him.
He turns his face, gritting his teeth when his bruise comes in contact with the floor again. The little padding of the blanket not providing as much cushion as he thought it would.
"Are you okay?" You blink, coming back to your senses as you hover above him, moving your hands to hold yourself up on either side of his head.
The fireplace to the right of you casts warm, flickering shadows across his skin, emphasizing the lean muscle of his chest and shoulders. His cheeks are a bit flushed, but not from the cold any longer. He stares at you for a moment, before reaching up and cupping the side of your face again.
It was the only confirmation you needed as you leaned down, pressing your chest to his and kissing him again, drinking in his taste and swollen lips.
His hands moved from your thighs pushing up the fabric of your hoodie. Between kisses he spoke, voice husky, "Take this off"
You sat up straight in an instant, grabbing the bottom of the hoodie and pulling the oversized fabric up and over your head. Once it was off you tossed it to the side and caught Jesse staring at you again.
Without the hoodie you were left in your bra and sweatpants. Again it wasn't the first time he'd seen you like this, at the waterfall that day you both stripped down to your undergarments, but that was different. Before he had desire pumping through every part of his body, having you this close to him. Knowing what it felt like to kiss you.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
Jesse blinks, a smirk creeping across his face as he finally lets his hands move to your bare waist, pulling you down so you're pressed against him again, "Because you're beautiful"
The blush creeps back to your cheeks as you press your forehead against his chest and let out a nervous sigh, "What the hell are we doing?"
"Whatever you want to" He says, voice gentle as his hand moves to stroke the back of your head. Then he whispers, "We can stop, no harm no foul"
You shake your head against him, burying your face into his neck. It was comforting in a way you never knew it could be. Instead of speaking you pressed your lips to his neck, placing soft kisses before nipping at the skin.
Jesse let out a guttural moan, his head tilting back to give you better access. The sound goes straight to your core as his hands grip you bringing you impossibly closer.
You suck at the spot right under his ear before running your tongue over the sensitive area and moving to his jaw. When your lips are back in his sight, he's pressing against them taking your bottom lip between his own and sucking on it.
The desire coursing though your body makes your hips involuntarily roll against him. His breath hitches as he digs fingers into your thighs, trying to hold himself back from grinding against you, desperate for friction, for the sensation of your bodies together.
In another flash of movement, Jesse is flipping your bodies, cradling the back of your neck as he sets you in his place. He positions himself atop you, his body pressing you down into the blankets as he settles a leg between your thighs. His arms come up to either side of your face, propping himself up so he can look down at you, "You're driving me insane"
You settle into the cushion underneath your back and watch him, bringing your finger to your mouth and wiping away the wetness that gathered from the previous kiss.
"I'm not doing anything" You feigned innocence, hands lazily rubbing along his biceps that were flexed as he held himself up. He rolls his eyes, closing the space between you again.
Jesse lets out a low moan as his mouth finds your neck, his lips trailing down your skin as he peppers you with open-mouthed kisses. He's rougher than you were, more desperate—leaving a trail of hickeys in his wake.
His body presses against yours, his hips automatically dipping down against yours as he loses some of his self-control.
He drops a hand to your chest, palming over your covered breasts as he kissed along your collarbone. A moan escapes your parted lips as his lips move from your collarbone to the curve of your breast, his hand still cupping the softness there as he nuzzles against you.
"You have no idea how long I've wanted this" He mumbles, his voice low and full of need.
You open your legs further as the friction of his jeans against you nearly sends you into orbit. He picks up the edge of the bra and swirls his tongue around your already harden nipples.
"Trust me," You sigh breathlessly, squirming underneath him, "I think I know"
He smiles at that. It makes you wonder how long the two of you had been secretly hoping the other would make a move. Had he always felt this way?
You couldn't think about it further as he dragged his wet mouth back up to your lips, pulling you back under.
His hips pressed down against yours, his body clearly showing his arousal as you explored his mouth with your tongue.
You reached for his hand, and he intertwined his fingers with yours as if he'd done it a million times before. You smiled against his lips because the act alone had butterflies erupting in your stomach.
But right now you needed him, in a way you've always wanted him. You untangled your fingers from his, guiding his hand down your stomach and stopping just above the waistband of your sweats.
He pulled back from your lips, briefly looking over your features before sealing his lips against yours again. His hand left yours as he flattened it against your lower stomach, sliding under the elastic with ease.
He moved slow and deliberate as his fingers dipped right past where you wanted him, massaging your inner thighs instead.
You whined against his mouth, bucking your hips in frustration. This only made him move slower, laughing at your expense.
He hushed you, kissing the side of your mouth as his fingers moved over the fabric of your underwear, "I wanna take this part slow"
"Fuck you" You whispered breathlessly as his fingers traced circles over the thin fabric. It was lighthearted, but you were getting more and more wound up with ear second.
"Maybe later" He said kissing the shell of your ear before he applied more pressure to his fingers, pressing against your clit.
You gasped at the sensation, reaching for his hand to urge him to speed it up but instead he stopped what he was doing, completely leaving your pants and put both hands above your head, pining them down against the blanket so you would stop trying to interfere.
He kissed you again, keeping one hand on yours before sliding his hand back down, this time by passing the underwear, carefully pushing the fabric aside.
His calloused fingers moved around your clit in a rhythm that had you squealing against Jesse's mouth. His other hand pining your hands down was purposely loose and you moved your hands down to hold his face as your tongues danced.
You needed something to ground you before you completely unraveled. There was no teasing now as he ran his index finger along your folds and slowly inserted a finger.
You just about cried out when he pulled from you mouth and looked at your disheveled appearance.
"Can I try something?" He asked, a sparkle in his eyes as he waited for you to answer.
You nodded, not really caring what he wanted to do, as long as it involved him being with you in the moment.
The moment he sat up you missed him, not caring to hide the way you needed him. But you quickly shut up as he moved down your feet.
"Don't tell me you have a foot fetish" You breathe, trying to laugh but it turned into a dry cough.
"Maybe I do," He hummed, tugging at the fabric of your sweatpants and pulling them over your feet, "Would that be your deal breaker?"
You rolled your eyes at him, propping yourself up on your elbows as you watched him, lifting yourself hips when he told you so that the pants could be completely moved.
You were officially more exposed than he had ever seen you, it was thrilling. Two of you had completely jumped over your comfort zone, now in uncharted territory as he sat back on his knees.
He looked you over, eyes combing over every inch of you until you cleared your throat awkwardly, "What?"
Jesse gave you a lopsided grin, pushing his hair back as he moved forward slightly, fingers dragging from your feet to your shins. He was almost giddy, whatever he was planning, he was eager to do, "I just cant figure out if I'm dreaming"
You threw your head back against the pillow, trying your best to hide the smile that was reaching your eyes.
His voice came again, low but dominant, "Tell me if you want me to stop"
You opened your mouth to make a smartass comment but closed it immediately when you felt his hot breath fan over your cunt. He pressed his mouth over the fabric, using the pressure of his tongue to his advantage.
You stared up at the ceiling, gripping the blanket underneath you as he swiped his tongue again. He said your name, you guess to check on you but you only nodded, pressing your lips in a tight line.
You felt his fingers again, this time playing with the waistband of your underwear before pulling them down to your knees. You didn't care that you were naked from the waist down, you didn't have time to as he buried his face between your legs.
His warm mouth found your bare clit, taking it under siege and assaulting it with his tongue. The combination of sucking and licking making you see stars.
"Oh fuck—" The words escaped your throat in a cry. His motions stopped completely. You took a minute to catch your breath, feeling Jesse's lips instead press tender kisses to the inside of your thighs.
"I can stop" His voice sounded far away as you blinked away stray tears that were slipping from the corners of your eyes.
"No—no don't stop," You ignored the desperation lacing your voice as you took in ragged breaths, "It's okay"
He slid one of his long arms up toward you, grabbing your hand and lacing it with his own again before he started back in on you. It helped ground you as he took mouthfuls, licking and nipping at your folds like a man who'd been starved.
You cried again as Jesse successfully found the rhythm that made your thighs tighten around his head. Your body jolting, hips bucking up at the sensation as you squeezed his hand.
You were like a too tight finally reaching a breaking point. With a final yelp you were releasing. You let got of his hand, bringing both hands to cover your face as you tried to steady your breath, utterly mortified at how loud you had just been.
Still between your legs Jesse was drinking you in, tongue swirling around your throbbing clit. To say the area was overstimulated would be an understatement.
He lifted himself, big arms bringing him up your body, before settling above you. There was a quiet that followed the moment, the fire crackling echoing in the room.
"You good?" He said in a breathless chuckle, trying to peek at you even though you still hid behind your hands.
"Mhm" You nodded.
"Are you sure?"
Jesse took the spot beside you on the blanket, leaning on his side and trying to peek through your fingers. When you didn't give up his hand dropped to your side, squeezing and tickling until you let out a giggle, squirming to get away from him.
He stopped once you swatted his hand away, cheesy smile causing your dimples to appear. His thumb brushed over your cheek, "There you are"
"Hi" You whispered, turning to fully look at him, knowing no matter how embarrassed you were, he didn't care.
"Hi" He let out a low chuckle, his free hand tracing over your skin while he watched you. He had a look in his eyes that you hadn't seen before, at least to this capacity, "You're so cute"
You leaned up, using your elbows as leverage as you moved into him. The taste of you on his lips makes your head spin.
Your heart beat retuned to normal as he kissed you tenderly, soaking you in. He made a sound against your lips as you pulled at his bicep, wanting him back on top of you.
You moved both hands down, fiddling blindly with his belt until it came loose and gave you easier access to work on his button and zipper.
You moved underneath him, trying your best to move his jeans down as you brought him closer. He got the idea, pushing them down further before coming back to your lips. His cock rested on your thigh as you moved, eager for him to take control.
"Are you sure—"
"Yes" You replied quickly.
The sound of your name made you look at him, he was watching you with pinched eyebrows, index finger dusting over your lip, "Because we don't have to, we can wait—"
"Jesse," You breathed, rolling your eyes with affection as your fingers threaded through his hair, "You are being so sweet and I love it. But I've waited an exceptionally long time for this moment, so please, fuck me"
It was more than an answer. It was everything.
He reached down, making sure you were still wet before lining up his tip with your entrance. You hadn't gotten a chance to look at it but as he pushed it in you could feel just how big he was.
It shocked you, for a second you froze and you appreciated that he gave you time to adjust to the size. When he felt you tap his bicep he knew you were ready.
He bottomed out, lifting himself ever so slightly to capture your mouth as you gasped. You dug your fingernails into his shoulders as he shifted.
With a slight twitch of his hips he had you squirming, slowly pulling out and then pushing back in. The thrusts came in slow, controlled movements as he breathed against your mouth.
You angled your leg to the side, opening up further to him as he repeated the motion. A whine jumped from your throat as he quickened his pace and he buried his head into your shoulder, wrapping you in a bear hug, "I know, I know"
He was holding back, restraining himself as best as he could. His strokes were leaving you breathless and crying for more. His hair tickled your ear as he peppered sloppy kisses on your skin.
In a matter of seconds he had you ready to unravel again, bringing you to the edge. Your hands were griping him, moving with him as he thrusts again and again.
"I—I think" You could hardly speak, desire setting your throat of fire with raw need. Before you could finish the sentence you were letting go again, costing his cock with warm juices that dripped out as he thrusted out again.
Then he was fully sliding out of you, turning to the side and catching his arousal in a random throw blanket.
There room was filled with ragged breaths as you gripped at the pillow beside you. The fire was still blazing to the side and it suddenly felt too hot in the room.
Jesse fell back beside you, growing as he went down on his shoulder again. His chest heaving as he stared at the ceiling.
"Jesus" You breathed, already missing the feeling of him inside of you.
"No, Jesse" He corrected, lolling his head to look at you with a goofy smile.
You weren't sure if it was his stupid joke or the fact that you just had sex with someone you considered your best friend, but you laugh.
And he joins you. The two of you laughing like a pair of crazy people surround by pillows and blankets on the floor.
When you catch your breath you flip onto your stomach, looking over at him with a new found confidence. He was still on his back, staring at you.
"I can't believe that just happened" You push his dark hair off his sweaty forehead. He nods, catching that same hand and bringing it to his lips, pressing a kiss to your fingers.
"I should've brought you fire wood more often" He laughs when you playfully smack at his shoulder.
"I should've offered to give you a massage the first week I met you" You say, pulling one of the sheets up and over your bare lower half's, noting that both your underwear and his pants were completely discarded now, mixed in with the mess of fabrics.
He moved his arm so you could cuddle up next to him, both your bodies warm and moist. You press your cheek against his chest, dragging your nails over his skin.
You came to a scary realization that you could stay like this forever. It was all you needed.
"Does this mean I get to stay the night?" He mumbled, pressing a kiss to the top of your head, already closing his eyes and wrapping his other arm around you.
"Unless you would rather leave and get those maps" You whisper, eyes fluttering shut at the sound of his breathing and the warmth of the fire cascading over the both of you.
ANYWAYS, I’m still not over Jesse’s character and the world of TLOU and I have a few x readers tucked away that I never posted. Should I post them or has the time of #jessexreader passed

The light from the sheer curtains washed over your face, causing you to immediately squint as you opened them. It was bright and there was a breeze coming through the window that made the fabric billow out over the crib underneath it.
The empty crib.
You rolled to your back, stretching slightly as your right arm moved to the other side of the bed that was also empty.
You sighed feeling content as you glanced back at the window and watched the green leaves on the trees blow in the wind.
It was late spring and after the harsh winter this weather felt like a treat. A relaxing break after all the hardships.
Just as your eyes began to flutter close again you heard the sound of baby cries and a loud bang that was muffled from the bedroom door being closed.
The sleepy side of you begged you to ignore it. To let him handle it on his own, but the mother side of you was already throwing the covers from your body and trudging toward the door.
The smell of burning hits your nostrils the second the door is open. Robins cries only grew louder as you make it to the last step on the staircase, the sound accompanied by the soft music of the old record player that sat in the living room.
Downstairs was bright, all the windows open and bright light shining through. You rubbed at your eyes as you walked into the kitchen.
"Stop, baby stay there," Jesse's panicked voice called as he watched your bare feet, "Don't move. There's glass everywhere"
Behind him, smoke billowed from the skillet on the stove top and Robin was in her high chair near the fridge, slamming her sippy cup on the tray. Wet tears falling down her red cheeks.
Jesse was coming at you with a hand broom and dust pan, carefully squatting down to clean up his mess in front of your feet. A mason jar that was once full of fresh apple juice now lay on its side, big shards scattered from where it hit the ground.
"One second baby" Jesse cooed now speaking to Robin, meticulously gathering all the pieces of glass. You leaned against the open door frame trying to hide your smile as you watched him. He glanced up at you, blowing the hair out of his eyes, "I was trying to get her juice and well–somehow managed to knock it off the counter"
"Can I help?" You giggled, watching as he picked up the last remnants of glass with a sweep of his hand broom.
He nodded, shoulders relaxing as he stood and moved to the trash near the back door, disappearing from the kitchen.
You moved swiftly, turning down the fire on the gas stove before going for your baby, who stopped crying at the sight of you.
"Good morning lovey" You cooed, picking her up from the highchair and giving her multiple little kisses on her wet face, "Do you want some juicy?"
She giggled, reaching out and touching your face as you spoke. You moved her to your hip, effortlessly holding her with one arm as you grabbed the sippy cup and opened the fridge with the other.
Luckily, you had another mason jar filled with apple juice near the back of the fridge. You always tried to keep multiple becuase of how much she liked it.
When Jesse comes back into the kitchen you can feel his eyes on you. He's standing by the counter where the glass once was with his arms crossed over his chest with a goofy smile on his lips.
"What are you lookin' at?" You tease, opening the cap of the cup and filling it halfway before screwing it back on. All the while Robin is perched on your side, clapping excitedly.
He takes his bottom lip between his teeth before shaking himself out of his trance and sighing, "You're just like super mom or somethin'"
He moves closer to you, watching as you sit Robin on the counter, hands firmly on her side to keep her steady as her little hands bring the sippy cup to her mouth.
Jesse is behind you now, tall frame leaning down to rest his head on your shoulder and hands snaking around your waist. You both watch your baby girl as she gulps the juice down before taking it away from her mouth and giggling at your faces.
"Did daddy make a mess?" You say in a funny voice as she watches your lips. She was still learning to speak and was obsessed with your lips when you spoke.
"Daddy was trying to let mommy sleep in but Robbie had other plans huh?" Jesse coos at her from beside you, the hand around your waist moves to grab at her little feet.
"Silly daddy," You giggled, leaning into kiss Robin on the cheek, "Doesn't he know that Robbie gets her juice before he burns the breakfast?"
"Shit" Jesse muttered, suddenly remembering the skillet sizzling behind him.
"Language" You warn playfully, picking Robin from the counter and placing her back on your hip as you turn to watch him fuss over the stove.
"Sorry, what daddy meant to say was darn" Jesse joked distracted as he took his spatula and desperately tried to save what looked like eggs, "I'm totally bombing this huh?"
You watched him amused, eyes trailing over his body as your baby pulled at your messy hair. Jesse's old sweatpants hung low on his waist and the muscles of his bare back flexed as he moved.
His skin was already starting to tan from the long hours of helping Tommy rebuild some of the structures in town from the previous winter.
"Not totally" You smiled, adjusting your baby, "You being home is enough for me"
It wasn't often that Jesse was given time off, especially in the mornings. He was usually long gone on patrols or doing council things by the time you and Robin woke up.
The heavy lifting was clearly paying off, making your mouth go dry. With a tug of your hair from tiny hands, you snap out of it.
You moved past him, touching his waist with light fingers, "Did you already feed her breakfast?"
He nodded, freezing under your gentle touch as you made your way to the living room.
Robin was still on a consistent diet of purée fruits and vegetables which made meal time easy. You set her in a bouncer that Maria and Tommy had gifted you. It was something Ben used religiously and now Robin enjoys endlessly.
Once she was sat inside you handed her a toy to keep her busy and found a new vinyl to put on.
It was a new luxury that Jesse had found for you. Something he had paid multiple patrol members to keep an eye out for while going out for supplies and given as a birthday present.
When you came down the stairs the morning of your birthday you could've died from the swelling of your heart. He had always asked about your collection of vinyls and knew how badly you wanted to be able to listen to them. You'll never forget the look on his face as you put on the first record and heard the grainy, unmistakable sound of the player.
Your collection had grown since then, Jesse now seeking out albums with covers he thinks look interesting or songs that sound alluring.
You stopped the needle on the Beatles song as you slipped the black circle back into its dirty cover and placed it back on the shelf. Your fingers danced over the spines of various options before landing on one of your favorites: Sweet Baby James. James Taylor's second album from the 70s.
This one you'd found long before dating Jesse, sneaking it in your pack while on patrol. The cover was ruined, torn and dirty but it still sounded beautiful. You had memories of your father singing the songs to you long before you made your way to Jackson.
You dropped the needle, filling the room with a soft static before the sounds of the guitar strumming.
You handed Robin the toy she had thrown as you walked back into the kitchen. Jesse was still at the stove, shutting it off completely and dropping the skillet into the sink.
You watched him turn on the faucet and let cold water cool the pan down as he cursed under his breath.
"Man, what did those eggs ever do to you" You said as you leaned against the island. The tile was cold on your fingers as you tapped them along with the music. When he didn't laugh, you asked, "What's wrong?"
He turned to you after shutting off the tap and mirrored your stance of leaning against the counter, crossing his arms back over his chest.
You admired him, big biceps folded and defined muscles as he sighed, "I really wanted you to sleep in"
"I did sleep in" You assured, hearing the jingling of Robins bouncer in the other room.
He shook his head slightly, looking utterly defeated, "I wanted to make you breakfast in bed and have Robin all taken care of before you woke up"
"Well, you did have Robin dressed and fed. Plus, I don't see any remnants of a food fight so that's a win," You joke, glancing around the kitchen. Jesse lets out a little laugh, "I'm sure breakfast would've went great if it weren't for the suicidal mason jar and screaming baby"
Jesse pushes himself off the counter opposite of you and takes slow steps until he's standing in front of you, "You aren't mad?"
"Why would I be mad?" You tilt your head, looking up at him, "At least my personal chef looks sexy while he's burning the food"
This brought a shy smile from him as he buried his head into your shoulder. You both laughed listening to the sounds of the living room mixing together before he stood straight, hands lingering on you.
"I knew you'd pick this album" He hummed, tucking your bed-head hair behind your ear as 'Fire and Rain' played through the small speaker.
It was your all time favorite song. Something that seemed to resonate with your life and everything you'd been through.
"Am I that predictable?" You hummed back, fingers dancing over his bicep before trailing down and playing mindlessly with the waistband of his sweatpants.
His eyes followed your hand before looking back at you and letting out a breath, "Yes, you are"
You glanced around his shoulder at the clock on the wall. 11:56 am
"Maria will be here soon, the kids have a play date thing by the barns today"
"How soon?" Jesse whines, hands running up and down your back.
"About 15 minutes" You sighed, pushing him by his waist to let you free, "I should get ready"
"Hold on" He mumbles, caging you in and nuzzling his face against your cheek, kissing down to your neck.
"Jesse," You whine, giggling at his lips tickling your skin, "I need to shower and get dressed"
He mocks you, repeating your name as you drop your head back and expose more of your neck to him. His voice sounding like butter as he hums against your skin.
"Hey—," You tease, playfully pushing at his chest with no real eagerness to leave, "I guess you shouldn't have let me sleep in"
He stops kissing at your neck and pulls back, eyeing you in your white tank top and his boxers, "5 minutes?"
You sigh, biting your cheek and attempting to hide the smile as you glance back into the living room. Robin is watching a bird outside the window and James Taylor's voice is still echoing through the house.
"5 minutes" You roll your eyes like you're the one giving in. Knowing you wanted this since the minute you walked into the kitchen.
He grabs your face in his big hands and runs his thumb over your lips as he watches you. He leans in agonizingly slow, teasing you as you shiver under his touch alone.
"This isn't the time to take things slow—" You press but before you can finish the sentence he is pressing his lips against you.
You relax under his touch, nails dragging gently over his back as drags his tongue against yours. He drinks you in, tilting your head back slightly so he could have a better angle and leaving his hand to rest on your throat.
It was a move that you begged him to do almost every time but he was always hesitant. Too much of a sweetheart to ever think about choking you, even if it was purely sexual. Instead he stuck to this move, barely any pressure but giving you somewhat of what you wanted in the moment.
You made a delighted sound against his mouth and he smiled. It wasn't often the two of you got to fool around since Robin had been born.
Of course you made time when you could. Late at night or extremely early in the mornings but not nearly as much as the two of you would've liked. Still, every time felt better than the last.
You let one of your hands slip low as you palmed him through his sweatpants. With the slightest touch he was grabbing your waist and setting you up on the counter.
When the back of your thighs hit the cold granite you hissed and he pulled back slightly, voice gravely, "Don't go starting things we can't finish"
Instead of responding you reached out and grabbed his shoulders pulling him close to you and kissing him again.
His hands found your thighs and he rubbed them gently as you opened your legs. He moved to stand between them, bringing you closer to the edge as he did.
He tugged at your bottom lip with his teeth as he moved his hand to the top of the boxers, slipping under the elastic. Just as his fingers disappeared you smacked at his hand.
"What did you just say?" You scold him, breathing heavy as he moves his fingers along your cunt.
"Oh this?" He teased, fingers already spreading you as he spoke, "This I can finish"
"Someone's cocky" You scoff, annoyed as his utter confidence until you feel his calloused finger rubbing your clit and fully stop breathing.
"Mhm" He hums licking his lips as he buries his hand deeper under the boxers.
An involuntary moan escapes your lips and you slap your hand over your mouth. Jesse can't hide his laugh as he watches you, catching your lips with his again.
It was a good way to stifle the moans that kept coming as he got you all worked up. It wasn't long before he was pumping two fingers inside of you and simultaneously rubbing your clit.
You could hardly focus on kissing him when he curled his fingers inside of you and instead dropped your head to his shoulder. Biting down at the skin there.
"Fuckin' shit" You screamed out as you came to the edge. The throbbing deep inside quickened and you were suddenly releasing all over his fingers, clenching around his digits.
"Language" Jesse teased quietly, moving slowly now as to not overstimulate you as he pulled his fingers out.
"Shut up" You breathe, pushing the hair off your forehead and wrapping your legs around his waist, pulling him back to your lips.
Despite being spent you were hungry for more. Hungry for him.
You had just slipped your hands into his hair when you heard a knocking at the front door.
"Shit shit shit" You panicked, pushing Jesse back so you could jump off the counter.
As you did he watched you amused, bringing the previously soiled fingers to his lips and licking them clean.
"That better not be Maria" You groaned quietly moving through the living room. Robin was still occupied and James Taylor was singing the last song on the album.
You quickly realized it had been more than 5 minutes.
"Hi Maira, you're—uh early!" You smiled, trying to seem as cool and collected as you could.
"Early?" She gave you a look, Ben holding her hand beside her on the porch, "Why aren't you dressed?"
She eyed your choice of clothes before seeing the strap of your tank top that was pushed off your shoulder.
"We've had a slow start to the morning," Jesse answered, holding Robin as he walked up to the open door. Smiling innocently as if he didn't just have his fingers knuckle deep inside of you, "It's my fault really—I burned breakfast"
Maria nodded, piecing together your disheveled appearance and the red mark on Jesse's shoulder. She wasn't born yesterday.
"Right," She shook her head, moving closer and holding her hands out to Robin with a beaming smile, "Do you wanna come with auntie?"
Robin made a babbling sound, nearly leaning out of Jesse's hold to get to Maria. He let her, passing her off gently as she giggled.
"I can be ready in like 10 minutes" You press, feeling guilty as you watch Robin coo in Maria's arms as she stared down at Ben.
Maria gives you a knowing look before asking Jesse to grab her diaper bag. He does as she asks, despite you staring a hole into the side of his head, zipping it as he comes back to the door.
"I'll take her and drop her off on the way back home" Maria speaks, adjusting the strap of the bag on her shoulder before looking at the two of you again, "You both deserve some time off"
"Maria you really have to do that" Jesse leaned against the door frame beside you. It wasn't often the two of you had babysitters or time by yourselves but you didn't want to pawn your baby off on anyone. That was something you two agreed on.
"Hush," Maria held up her hands, silencing you both in an authoritative mom sort of way, "You two have fun, but you know—not too much fun"
A blush started to creep up your neck at her words, "You should at least wait until she's at least a year old before you have another—"
"Jesus, please stop Maria," You whined, holding a hand over your face, embarrassed.
"I'm just sayin', ya'll could use some adult time" She held her hand up defensively, before holding Robins hand and waving, "Say bye-bye to mommy and daddy"
"Thanks Maria" Jesse called as she walked away with the children, Robin immediately forgetting about the two of you as Ben started to run ahead of them.
"God that was mortifying" You cry, leaving the front door and moving back through the living room and shutting the record player off.
"I think it's sweet of her" Jesse said simply, amused at your demeanor change.
"It's not, she thinks we're like rabbits and we just wanna fuck all the time or something" You groaned, picking up the toys that Robin threw as the breeze from the open window blows your hair. Your ears go red hot as you remember the windows had been opened when Jesse finger banged you until minutes ago.
"She doesn't think that," Jesse reassures you, moving into the living room to help you, "She probably just knows that it's been hard for us to have alone time—"
"Why would she think that?" You interrupt him, holding 3 teddy bears in your arms as you stand straight and stare at him.
"I don't know" Jesse holds the sippy cup in his hand, confused expression across his features, "Isn't it common for new parents?"
"Jesse" You launch one of the bears at his chest. He catches it with ease and stares at you, "Did you tell Tommy about our sex life?"
"Why would I tell Tommy anything about our sex life?" Jesse tossed the toy into the bin near the window, looking at you like you were crazy.
"Because men complain to other men when they aren't getting any at home" You shout and Jesse suddenly realizes that you are seriously mad, "Is that what you did?"
Before he could answer you were throwing the other two bears at him, this time directly at his face and stomping past him and up the stairs.
You grabbed your clothes from the dresser and slammed the bathroom door shut as you started to brush your knotty hair with too much force.
When Jesse came into the bathroom you were still fuming. You didn't let him speak before you were pointing the brush at him in the mirror, "Get away from me"
"Would you stop that?" Jesse challenged, talking about your tone and the way you were aggressively moving the brush through your tangled ends.
If looks could kill then he would be dead on the floor from the daggers you were sending him through the mirror.
His gaze softened as he watched you, "Baby I promise you that is the last thing I would tell Tommy. I have no reason to tell anyone in this town about our sex life, period." He was watching you through the mirror as you slammed the hair brush down and began brushing your teeth.
You braced yourself on the sink as you stared at yourself, fully ignoring him as you scrubbed the toothpaste onto your teeth.
"Our personal life is no one's business. Maria just wanted to be nice and help us out because she's an awesome aunt to Robbie. That's all"
You leaned over and spit into the sink before rinsing your mouth out and turning to him, arms still crossed over your chest.
"And you know I would never hold something like 'not getting enough sex' over your head anyways. You're an awesome mom and you do so much for both of us," Jesse took slow steps toward you as he spoke, "I'm not that kind of guy"
You sigh, "I know you aren't"
"Then why jump to conclusions?" He asked carefully, reaching out and touching your cheek as you lean against the sink.
You shrug, leaning into his touch.
"Use your words, tell me what's wrong" His voice is still gentle as he moves closer.
"I don't want any of these people—women thinking I'm not, you know, taking care of you," You sigh, nervously biting at your thumb as you realize how vulnerable it makes you sound, "...in that way"
"Baby" Jesse cooed, not being able to hide his smile as you try to hide your face behind your hands.
"You should see the way some of these women eye you" You defend yourself, feeling even more embarrassed the more you open your mouth, "When you're working with Tommy and all sweaty and shirtless—like they want to take a bite out of you"
"I had no idea you were so easily jealous" He hummed, pulling your arms out of the defensive position they were in, "It's cute"
"Jesse you're not blind, I know you notice it too"
"Is that why I keep getting asked what my favorite kind of muffin is?" Jesse jokes, fingers moving slowly across your skin.
"It's not funny" You whined, pulling your arms from his grasp.
"You're right. I'm sorry," He straightens up quick, becoming serious as he holds you in place, "You don't have to worry about stuff like that okay? I'm happy and I only want you, alright, I'm not going anywhere"
You nod, looking away from him and blinking away the tears that were gathering.
"Okay?" He nudges his foot against your leg, trying to make you smile.
You nod, feeling stupid for the pointless argument. You wrap your arms around his neck as he leans down to kiss you tenderly.
His lips are gentle, all consuming as he pushes you back against the sink with a small thud.
"I have to shower" You mumble against his lips, as his tongue slides into your mouth in a heavy swoop.
"Me too" He smiles, grabbing the back of your thighs and lifting you with ease before he steps into the shower.
Without a second thought you lean over and reach for the shower dial, turning on a spray of warm water.
It soaks the two of you instantly as Jesse presses your back into the shower wall. Lips leaving yours and lapping up the water that was running down onto your collar bone. The cold tile on your back mixing with the warm sensation of the water makes your head spin.
Especially as Jesse sets you down and your feet reconnect with the ground. You face away from the shower as it sprays against your back.
The white tank top you wore now completely see through as Jesse fusses with his sweat pants.
You turn toward the water, letting it fully run over your hair and face, pushing the water back from your eyes when you hear the thud of wet fabric on the floor.
You smile feeling his fingers picking at the wet boxers you wore, sticking to your skin as he attempts to pull them down.
"Probably should've undressed before getting in here" He chuckles as you help shimmy them down your legs and step out of them.
Turning to face him and feeling the water on your back again you get the chance to fully admire him. Water droplets running down his tone body, passing all of his scars and bruises that made you thankful he wasn't patrolling as often. Even after having his child and sleeping next to him every night the sight of his dick made you blush.
"Are you checking me out?"
"Maybe," You bite at your lip, leaning against the wall and continuing to stare at him, "What're you gonna do about it?"
Jesse comes close positioning himself between your legs as the water ricochets off the hard planes on his body. His finger slides up your leg until it's dragging across your stomach until it's playing with your chest. Your nipples are pebbling through the thin fabric as Jesse draws small circles around the area, teasing you.
He's already hard against your leg and you are desperate for him.
"Aren't we supposed to be conserving water?" You hum, trying to your best to cover the pure ecstasy you were feeling.
His hands drop to the bottom of the tank top, picking at the hem and peeling it up until it's at your chest.
"This won't take long"
"There you go again," You roll your eyes, squirming at the slow pace as he exposes your breasts and mouths them gently. When he swirls his tongue around the sensitive area, your breath catches in your throat, "Overly confident"
You lift your arms above your head as he lifts the shirt the rest of the way up your body, taking the time to kiss you when your lips are free of the wet material.
"Ow, shit shit shit" You cry against his mouth as he aimlessly tugs at the water logged fabric, not realizing it's tangled in your long wet hair,
"—Jesse my hair"
"I'm sorry baby, here," He speaks gently, pulling away from your lips and turning you carefully so he could assess the issue, "One second"
He works quickly but with care as he un ravels your hair. When it's finally free he throws the top outside of the shower. It lands on the hard tile of the bathroom floor with a wet plop.
His hand rubs at your scalp as best as he could through wet mess as you turn back to face him, "I didn't know it was tangled up in there—"
You don't let him finish, completely turned on at his gentleness and smashing your lips against his. The water made you slip against him as he picked you up, this time pressing you into the corner of the shower.
His lips move sloppy against you as he pushes the soap and bottles off the small ledge so you could rest your foot against it.
The angle was perfect and you shook with anticipation as he lined himself up with your entrance. You simultaneously gasp when he's fully inside, allowing a moment of connection before he begins thrusting into you. He pushes in, bottoming out before pulling back and repeating the motion.
With practiced ease he moves slow and steady, knowing it was the best way to get you off. You grab his hair at the back of his head, holding firmly as his teeth find your collarbone and gently nips at the soft skin.
His cock pulses inside of you with every motion and you knew he's trying to hold himself together. You loved that he was like a teenager every time, a breath away from coming undone when he had you like this.
You move your free hand through his wet hair and tuck it out of his eyes so you could see his face. Seeing him like this nearly sent you over the edge, being able to see just how badly he wanted you.
"Fuck" He mumbles, smashing his lips against yours and breathing hard, "You're so goddamn beautiful"
He picks up his pace, moving your leg a little higher on the shelf and dipping down to get a better angle. Nails claw into his back as he hits the perfect spot, over and over again. You squeeze your eyes shut, bouncing up against the shower wall with each thrust.
"Don't stop" You cry, fully supporting yourself on his shoulders. With another cry you are releasing fully on his for the 2nd time this morning. Clenching tight around his shaft as your pussy throbbed.
The sensation of your cum and knowing you've reached peak, pushes Jesse to the edge and with a twitch of his cock he's spilling his juices inside of you.
"Fuckin' hell" You breathe, fully collapsing against his wet and sticky skin. Behind Jesse the glass shower door is covered in steam as it billows through the small bathroom. You both heave heavy breaths as you feel the water again, bringing you back to earth.
He stays inside of you, relishing in the sensation of your cum mixing together. You push the wet hair from his eyes again, lust clouding your mind. You loved when he came inside of you. It made you hot and bothered all over again, feeling his love drip down your thighs. Neither of you letting the uncertainty of another baby ruin the pure moment.
When he does pull out of you, it's slow and gentle. He helps you back onto solid ground, careful to make sure you don't slip.
The aftercare, even in the shower, is top tier. He takes a clean rag and soaps up your body before doing himself. He sneaks little sweet kisses while he moves across your body. Nothing inherently sexual but turning you on just the same.
"Where's your shampoo?" He asks softly, hands snaking around your waist as he kisses your shoulder blades.
"Somewhere behind you, it went flying when you swiped everything off the ledge," You giggle, rolling your eyes at the moment, "I can wash my hair if you hand it to me"
He presses another kiss to your neck before letting you go and grabbing the shampoo from the shower floor. You hear him squeeze it into his hands and sigh, ready to protest when his voice echoes in the room, "Let me take care of you"
He massages the soap into your scalp, fingers feeling like pure magic as he works it through. Your eyes close and roll to the back of your head at the pure relaxation that washed over you.
"Time to rinse" He whispers, backing you into the stream of water and moving his hands, being sure to get all of the soap out before squeezing the excess water from the strands of hair.
He applies the conditioner next, remembering what you said about only applying it middle to bottom, not the scalp.
You bring your thumb to your teeth, chewing on the nail aimlessly as you attempt to hide the stupid smile that was plastered across your lips.
Jesse's gentleness is part of what made you fall for him in the first place, and in quiet moments like this you were always reminded of just how gentle he could be.
The cheesy smile only grows bigger when he turns you around and backs you into the water to rinse the creamy white from your hair.
"What're you smilin' at?"
Without answering him, you pull him into the stream of water and wrap your arms around his broad shoulders. Your eyes flutter close as he gives into you again and melts against your wet lips.
He tastes of water and soap now. The water is starting to go cold but you don't care. You want to stay with him like this forever.
"Maybe we should have Maria babysit more often" He mumbles against you as he picks you up again.
I just watched Opus on HBO MAX because I saw that Young was playing a minor character called ‘Kent’ and when I tell y’all I sat through the whole goddamn 1 hr and 40 mins for a flash of him working in a coffee shop in the LAST 15 minutes
I don’t even understand the significance of the scene because it’s that short, why did they even bother giving him a name, I’m so confused 😭😂
Ahh i miss y’all'!!! I miss writing and I miss Jesse! i’ve been trying to write because I have so many ideas, but I just had some crazy things going on! When you walked into the Tipsy Bison you let the door swing hard against the wall. Luckily the music was loud, and spirits were high, so no one seemed to notice.
You scanned the crowded tables and bar, eyes landing on the familiar faces of your friends.
"There you are, we were wondering if you were ever gonna show up" Ellie teased, pointing her finger at you while holding her glass, as you slid into the booth next to Jesse, who was sitting quietly nursing his beer.
"Here I am" You declared, tucking your hair behind your ear, hoping they wouldn't notice your flushed face. You looked to Jesse's hand wrapped around his glass, "You gonna drink that?"
Instead of speaking, he slid the glass across the tabletop to you. You brought it your mouth and downed it in one big gulp, licking your lips when you were finished.
"Where's Alex?" Dina asks, wearing a confused look at your demeanor, "Still too sick to come?"
"Oh, he's coming all right," You muttered, sitting the glass back down against the wood with a thud.
"What does that mean?"
"It means I just caught him cheating on me" You let out a pitiful laugh trying your best to not cry, fidgeting with your sleeves and pulling them down over your hands.
"What" Dina smacks the table hard in surprise, and you jump, looking to her, "What you mean?"
"I stopped by his place to see if he was feeling up to drinking tonight" You explained, taking a breath before continuing, "And he was there with some red head"
Everyone knew that Alex claimed to be 'sick' for the last couple of days. Hiding out in his house on the edge of town and refusing to let anyone check on him, under the guise of not wanting to pass on his sickness. You obeyed his wishes but after almost a week you became worried. Alex had been your steady boyfriend for nearly two years, and you didn't care if he was contagious, you had to make sure he was okay.
"Who was it?" Ellie's jaw fell open as she pressed her palms to the table. Her and Dina were watching you from across the table with expectant eyes. Jesse had yet to make a sound, watching as you continued.
"She's from the group that rolled in from California the other day"
The three knew the group well. You were all often assigned with patrols and helping people get settled into Jackson. This group was only staying for a couple of weeks before embarking on their journey east. The red headed woman was a couple of years older than you.
"You're sure that he was cheating?" Ellie pressed.
They'd all known Alex as long as you had, growing up in Jackson the group was tight knit and strong. It was hard to believe he would do something like this, even if he was a dickhead the majority of the time.
"Pretty damn sure," You nod once, watching Jesse's fingers tap against the table before looking to your lap, "She was fully bent over the kitchen table, screaming his name—"
"How could he do this to you?" Dina raises her voice smacking at the table again, "I'm going to cut his fuckin' dick off"
You thought the same thing when you came through the back door and his head whipped in your direction, halting his thrusts.
"Dickhead" Ellie sighs, staring off at the bar as she digested the information you'd given.
Alex was the oldest of the group. About five years older than you and Jesse, with Dina and Ellie a couple years behind. The two guys had been close, growing up like brothers, both orphaned and taken in by Jackson long before you came around.
Throughout your teen years you developed a crush on Alex, liking the attention he gave you. It didn't help that he always flirted with you, treating you like a little plaything.
You never understood why Jesse seemed to hate Alex after announcing your relationship while he treated you like nothing had changed.
"Fuck him" Dina shouts, already a few more drinks in and a fierce protecter of her friends. She nudged at Ellie to let her out of the booth, "I'm gonna bring you his dick on a silver platter and-"
"How about you just get me a drink?" You offered a small smile, watching as Ellie took her girlfriends hand, "I could use something to take my mind off all this"
"Tequila shots coming right up" Dina beams at the thought of more drinks, saluting to you before following Ellie to the bar.
With the girls gone you dropped your head against the table, letting out a shaky sigh. You wished you were no bullshit like Ellie or confident with the 'I don't give a fuck' attitude like Dina but you weren't. You were sensitive and emotional, unfortunately wearing your heart on your sleeve.
You felt Jesse's hand on your knee, a comforting touch that helped ground you.
"Did you know?" You asked, voice echoing under the table. The thought popped into your mind as you stormed out of Alex's house. It would explain his distant behavior toward him, maybe he knew but didn't feel it was his place to tell you.
"What?"
You lifted your head, the stray tears falling off your face at the motion.
You sniffled, rubbing your hand over your red eyes, "You always have this tension with him now so I thought—"
"—You really think I would've kept something like that from you?" His tone was soft, not upset more pained.
"I feel like I don't know anything anymore"
It was true, you felt like a joke. How long had he been doing this to you?
"I would've told you if I knew" He cut you off. His voice unwavering. Solidifying your trust in him. Even as kids Jesse was never able to lie to you.
"Has he always hooked up with girls from the groups passing in and out of Jackson?" You pressed, elbows against the table as you rubbed your temples.
"Yes," His jaw ticked, eyes flicking toward the bar before he continued, "Before you two started seeing each other. It was his thing"
"Not yours?" You laughed, but nothing was funny. You turned in the booth to face him fully, the world outside of the window behind him was dark, small fires scattered to light the street up.
He sighed, "He has always liked no commitment"
You knew that. Jesse had tried to warn you when you told him you were thinking about finally giving in to Alex's advances. You didn't believe him then, too wrapped up in the attention he gave you.
With your back to the rest of the bar it was like the rest of the world shut out. The space between the two of you calm and quiet despite the band playing toward the back of the building.
You had a hard time hiding your emotions around him, especially when his eyes seemed to read right into what you were thinking.
His gaze softened. "Are you okay?"
"Not really" You shake your head, lip quivering. Desperately wanting to let the flood gates open.
"Do you want me to take you home?" He asked, voice gentle as he watched a few more stray tears roll down your face. He was reaching out to swipe them away when you jumped at Dina's voice from behind.
"Alright bitches, it's time to get drunk" She cheered, with Ellie in tow as she carried a platter of small shot glasses and a jar of moonshine.
You gave Jesse a small smile, hurriedly wiping at your wet cheeks before turning back to sit normally.
An hour and too many shots later you were feeling the alcohol settling in. Your nerves had settled enough to find yourself giggling at Dina's exaggerated story. Your cheeks warm, and headache taking a back seat.
At some point you had moved closer to Jesse, feeling his leg brush up against yours under the table. He didn't seem to mind as he swirled the liquid in his glass, adding important details to Dina's story, that'd he'd heard a million times. He'd taken about two shots before switching back to his beer.
"I swear to god I had this infected right in front of me and I never saw—" Dina's story stopped short as her eyes tracked something by the door, "Just the motherfucker I wanted to see"
You turned, seeing Alex looking around the building, the same way you had when you first came in. You spun back around to face your friends, hoping he hadn't seen you, "I don't wanna talk to him"
Dina moved to push Ellie out of the booth, but was stopped with Ellie's a firm hand on her thigh.
"You don't have to talk to him" Jesse assured, watching him walk to the bar and grab a drink.
"He's going to try and sit with us," Ellie leaned over the table slightly so you could hear her over the music, "Do you want just want to leave?"
Maybe it was the alcohol talking but you shook your head. You were not going to run away and let him ruin the time you were having. Fuck Alex.
"Here," Jesse instructed sitting back against the booth to make room between himself and the table, "Swap me"
"What?"
"Swap me places so he can't sit next to you" Jesse explained, nodding at the space like an invitation. The space was small and you were drunk. When you went to move across his lap you nearly fell over, knees hitting hard against the table and hands catching yourself on his thighs momentarily, back pressed against his chest. His hands moved to your waist, firm and strong as he moved you the rest of the way across him and helped you sit back on the booth, now next to the window.
With Jesse now on the outside and Ellie and Dina across the table you felt loved, knowing that your friends cared about you.
"Didn't know we were having a drinking night guys," Alex addressed the whole table with his drink in hand before zeroing in on you, "Hey baby"
You were suddenly nervous, heartbeat picking up, the happy spirits leaving you.
No one at the table responded. You were staring at the table top, reaching for the last shot and throwing it back as the other 3 stared at him.
"Can we talk?" He sighed after a beat, staring as you crossed your arms and leaned your head against the cool surface of the window.
"She doesn't wanna talk to you" Ellie answered for you, shooting daggers at him.
"Y/n," He ignored her, setting his beer on the edge of the table and leaning against it with both hands holding him up, "Y/n, look at me"
You turned away even further, looking out the window and feeling tears stinging your eyes. You blinked them away refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing you upset.
"Baby I'm sorry, okay? I wasn't in the right headspace" Alex spoke, surely aware that you had already told the others by their overall demeanor.
"Big emotions for such a little guy," Dina raised her voice, trying to stand from the table again, "You're a real piece of—"
"Enough" Jesse said calmly to Dina, before finally looking up at someone he used to call his friend, "She clearly doesn't wanna talk to you"
"Clearly," Alex mocks, sending daggers at the side of your head before looking to Jesse, "You think you can speak for her all of a sudden?"
Alex was getting upset, you could tell by his voice. Sounding vaguely similar to the nights he drank too much and got too loud with you.
"Why don't you just leave?" Ellie argued, "Give her some space man"
"—Why don't you mind your own fucking business?" He bit back.
"How about you fuck—" Dina tried to stand again.
"My god, fine," You interrupted, smacking a hand on the table and finally looking at him, "What do you wanna talk about?"
"Us."
"Us?" You laughed, feeling your head spin. "Sure let's talk about us"
"Privately" He demanded.
You nodded once as Alex picked up his beer again and took a long sip, eyeing Jesse as he did.
"You sure about this?" Ellie asked, looking to you then to Jesse who was still looking at Alex.
"Might as well get it out of the way, it's fine," You shrugged, nudging Jesse's arm with your own, "Can you let me out?"
He listened, standing up in front of Alex. Jesse was much bigger than him, taller with more muscle.
You stumbled, the drinks fully hitting you as you stood upright. He reached for your hand and you recoiled away from him, "Talking does not require touching"
"Let's step outside" Alex nodded, holding his hands up in mock surrender.
You nodded, taking another glance at your friends before following him.
The air outside of the Tipsy Bison felt cool on your face and you sighed, looking toward the window to see Jesse, Ellie and Dina to your left.
You stopped walking, turning back toward Alex with your arms crossed, "Go ahead and talk"
"Babygirl, I—"
You laughed, "I can't even begin to explain how I am not your babygirl"
"Listen, I'm sorry, okay?"
"Sorry you did it or sorry you got caught" You argued, the drinks causing you to sway slightly in front of him.
"You know I never meant to hurt you. I just–well I don't know what came over me" He was taking steps closer to you, "I know we can fix this"
"This?" You echo, motioning clumsily between the two of you, "There is no fixing this. You fucked another girl"
"Baby don't—"
"How many times?" You pressed, pushing him away when he tried to reach out to you.
"Look I know you're mad at me right now but don't punish us baby"
"Stop calling me that," You were shouting now, pushing at his chest hard to get him away from you, "It's over"
In a quick move he had caught your wrists in a tight grip. You tried to pull back but he used the leverage to bring you closer to him, "You're drunk, you don't know what you're saying"
"Let. Go. Of. Me." You spit through gritted teeth, thrashing to get free.
You heard the door to the Tipsy Bison open, the music becoming clear before the door shut and it was muffled again. You didn't have to look behind you to see who it was.
"Let her go Alex," Jesse's voice echoed in the quiet night air, "Be a man and go home"
"She's drunk," Alex called over your shoulder, "I'm going to take her back to my place so she can sleep it off"
"No you're not" Jesse argued, stepping forward.
"Fuck—Jesse, this has nothing to do with you" Alex shouted, suddenly clenching his hands onto you, the grip becoming tighter the more angry he became, "Why don't you just mind your own damn business"
"You're hurting me" You whined, stumbling as he yanked you toward away from where Jesse was standing.
You could see Jesse now, as he moved in a flash, putting himself between you and Alex, breaking the grip he had on you.
Before you could even fully comprehend what happened, Alex had cocked his arm back and sent a hard punch to Jesse's face.
"You son of a bitch" You yelled, moving around Jesse before he could stop you and slapped him across the face.
He had never hit you before, so when you felt the stinging heat over your face you couldn't believe it. The momentum of his backhand sent you onto the gravel.
Jesse heard the hit and reacted quick. You weren't sure what happened but you knew they were on the ground and Jesse was on top of him, grunting accompanying the sick sound of his fist making contact with Alex.
The skin underneath your hand throbbed and your head was spinning bad. The alcohol not helping the panic you were feeling. Dina and Ellie appeared from thin air, Dina helping you to your feet while Ellie grabbed Jesse's arm, mid punch.
There was hushed conversation between the two as Dina moved your hand so she could look at you. The skin was red with a small amount of blood where his ring sliced your lip.
"You'll be okay," She slurred still able to function as if she were sober as she examined you.
You didn't respond, quite literally in shock at what had happened. Instead you looked over to see Alex lying on the ground, holding his side. Jesse and Ellie were standing in front of you now.
"She’ll have a fat lip and it’s going to bruise pretty bad but it'll heal"
Jesse said something to Ellie before reaching out and touching your shoulder, "Come on, I'll take you home"
You nodded, falling in step beside him using his arm for support. After you were out of ear shot of the girls you let out a shaky breath, "I don't wanna be alone, can I stay with you tonight?"
"Yeah, of course you can"
After a short walk in complete silence you were in his kitchen as he used a wet cloth to clean up the small amount of blood had dripped from your mouth.
He was close to you as you sat on his counter, legs crossed and fingers pulling at the loose thread of your long sleeved top.
The punch that he had taken from Alex left his lip bloody and slightly swollen but he didn't seem to care, “Looks like we are twins”
"Has he done that to you before tonight" Jesse asked, voice soft as he furrowed his brows, tentatively pressing the cloth.
"Never" You whispered. Then, in the silence of his home and with no pressure to keep up a strong front you looked at him, "Came close a couple of times when he would drink but never that far"
His jaw clenched when you winced at the cloth touching a sensitive spot.
"I'm sorry"
You blinked, "For what?"
"For making you think you couldn't tell me about that kind of thing" He says simply, moving to grab the ice pack that he had set on the counter.
"It's not that," You breathed, "I just—you guys were such good friends and I didn't want to get in between that"
"Were" Jesse corrected, muttering another apology as you hissed at the cold sensation on your face.
Any tears you thought you might've cried were gone. The betrayal you felt of Alex cheating on you dissolved the second he hit you.
You took a breath, gaze darting to his lips from his eyes, suddenly becoming aware of just how close he was standing to you.
You took the ice pack from his hands, ignoring the strange sensation of his fingers against yours as you touched his lip with it, "Thanks for stepping in back there"
"Don't thank me for that" He mumbled speaking around the ice pack, watching your movements, "It should've happened a long time ago, I've been wanting to have a go at Alex for a while now"
"Well I'm still sorry," You whispered, feeling guilt for all the drama and his fat lip, "I feel so stupid about all this"
"Don't say that," He whispered, pulling back away from the ice pack to speak clear, his hands falling on your knees, "You were too good for him anyways"
"Yeah?"
"Yeah" He nodded, looking over at the clock on the wall after his eyes lingered on your lips too long.
A couple hours later, you were laid out on his couch wearing the shirt and boxers he had lent you to sleep in. Your legs spread out across his lap. An old VHS tape played on the small tv he'd found years back in the attic of whoever lived in this house before the outbreak.
You were fidgeting on the cushions, trying to hold the ice pack against your mouth. In the calm of his house you felt relaxed but the events of the night still lingered in your mind. And you were painfully aware of his hand that was causally resting on your shin.
"I had a feeling that he was screwing around behind my back" You say your thoughts out loud, watching the actors on the screen.
"For how long?"
"A couple months" You sighed, "I caught him in the stables with a girl a while back, somehow let him convince me I didn't see what I saw"
Jesse nodded, not sure what to say. Instead of letting the silence linger, you continued, "I should've wised up back then"
"Why didn't you?" He asked, voice curious rather than brimming with judgment.
You turned slightly to your back, staring yo at the ceiling. His hand moving around your leg in small soothing motions made you want sprint around the room.
"I guess knowing he was interested in me, him being older and everything, just felt like I would be crazy to leave him especially after 2 years"
"You deserve someone who doesn't make you feel trapped" Jesse eyes you briefly before looking back to the movie.
"I'm done with this ice pack," You sighed, standing and walking into the kitchen. If you didn't move out of the room soon you weren't sure you would make it. You placed the pack back in the freezer, sticking your head inside for a moment to clear your mind, but you couldn't stop thinking about the way Jesse was making you feel.
Where was this coming from? Had you always felt butterflies at his touch or sound of his voice? Did tonight change something between the two of you?
For a long time you weren't sure what it was about him. Why you felt so comfortable with him or why he became distant when you and Alex started dating. Wondering if he knew that you noticed the way his eyes would linger on you or how he would flex his hands when near you, like he wanted to reach out and touch you. How your heart soared when he put himself between you and Alex, defending you against him.
Wondering if he knew you had a little crush on him since you first met him back all those years ago. But he was your best friend. Maybe it was the liquor still present in your body but you felt brave.
You didn't linger on thought too long, afraid you would talk yourself out of what you were going to do as you walked back to the living room.
He had his head rested back, the light from the tv dancing over his face as he watched you stand in front of him, "You okay?"
"Mhm" You nodded, knowing if you waited any longer you would second guess yourself. So instead you moved onto his lap, thighs on either side of him.
"Hey," He stiffened under you immediately sitting up, keeping his hands on the armrests, "Hey—what're you doing?"
"Nothing" You whispered, feeling the same butterflies you felt earlier in the booth of the when you moved across his lap. "I just wanna try something"
You could hear his breath catch in his throat as you watched him. When you noticed his nervous fidgeting on his leg you catch his hand and place it on the small of your back, an invitation. "Is that okay?"
He nodded, letting you move his other hand to rest on the top of your thigh.
You smiled at him, slowly moving your hand to his arm dragging it up the length of his arm all the way to the side of his neck.
He watched you, eye brows pinched and jaw set. Like he was being held at gunpoint.
You leaned forward agonizingly slow, still testing the waters as he watched you. He whispers your name, as smooth as butter.
You moved your hand to cup his cheek, thumb grazing over his fat lip. He didn't react when you touched it despite the little amount of blood that was pooling around the edge of the cut.
"Your poor lip" You cooed, distracted by the swollen redness, watching it roll under your soft touch.
"I-It's okay," Jesse rushed, shifting under you uncontrollably like he was going to stand up. He quickly changed the subject, "How does yours feel?"
You sigh, ignoring him, still feeling the liquid courage as you catch his gaze, eyes scanning all over his face.
"Tell me if you want to stop" You whispered, breath fanning over his lips as you moved closer ever so slightly.
When he didn't answer you glanced up at his eyes and back down at his lips. When your lips finally sealed against his, you tilted your head. You felt his hand flex against your thigh but he still didn't fully move it.
The metallic taste of the blood from his lip mixing with yours was addicting as you pressed closer, kissing at his bottom lip gently as your other hand moved to cup his cheek.
Pulling back enough to look over his face, you felt a pang of embarrassment, his eyes open and staring at you. That is until he leaned in toward you, catching your lips with his own. He kissed you back, lips massaging over yours. You smiled finally feeling his hand finally move, gliding up your arm to touch your face. The feeling leaving a trail of fire in its wake.
Suddenly his lips moved against yours harder in more desperate manner, his body reacting to your touch as you carded your fingers into his hair.
You parted his lips with your tongue, tasting every inch of his mouth like you'd always imagined. He tasted of blood and the beer.
You hummed against his lips, feeling a sense of success when he came out of his shell and moved his tongue against yours, soft circular motions.
The pure pleasure you were feeling at just the feeling of his lips on yours was driving you crazy. You adjusted slightly on his lap, moving closer to him when you felt his hands drop from your face and fall to your hips holding you in place.
He broke the kiss, leaning his head back against the chair, breathing uneven.
"Did I do something wrong?" You asked, pulling back in a daze hands sitting flush against his chest.
"No—" He sighed, realizing his hands were still on your hips and moving them quick as if you were poisonous, "I—we should probably—"
His words caught in his throat as you leaned forward, lips finding his neck and kissing along the expanse there.
"Should probably what?" You teased, tongue leaving a wet trail from his collarbone to his ear where you whispered.
Your name fell from his lips again only this time with a warning tone you had yet to hear from Jesse, you ignored it.
You made your way along his jawline before finding his lips again and kissing them just was you rolled your hips slowly against his lap.
He stood up abruptly, nearly knocking you off in the process as he tossed you back onto the couch.
"What's wrong" You whined, bouncing on the worn out cushions as you looked up at him.
He didn't answer, putting physical distance between the two of you.
"Jesse" You warned, standing up in the dark living room, the couch now empty, "If I'm reading into this please just tell me, I don't like looking stupid"
Jesse was nervous, in a way you had never seen him before, rubbing at the back of his neck and trying to not make eye contact with you.
"Oh god" You cried out, hands covering your face as you paced the floor, "I'm so goddamn stupid"
"You're not stupid" Jesse said softly, still keeping his distance from you.
"I am," You cried out again stopping in front of him, "You're my best friend. Fuck—I thought we had this tension—and now I fucked up everything"
"You have such a unique way of misunderstanding things"
"I'm not misunderstanding anything, I crossed a line between our friendship and I should have never—" Jesse crossed the room, grabbing your chin and kissing you again, in an effort to stop your rambling.
It was a gentle, quick kiss, pressed against your lips and gone before you had a chance to react. You sighed, snapping yourself out of the moment, "Don't kiss me out of pity"
Jesse rolled his eyes, taking your shoulders and pushing you back gently until your back hits the wall.
He angled your face up toward his so he had a better position to kiss you. This time he was the one leaning in slow, making you wait in anticipation. He peeked your lips once before parting your lips, running his tongue along your mouth. He was using more pressure than before, hands on either side of your head against the wall.
You sighed into the kiss, tasting the saltiness of your stray tears mixing with his salvia. When he felt your hands slide across the plane of his shoulders and interlock behind his neck he knew you were understanding.
"You had a rough night," He pulled back, breath fanning over your face as he tucked a strand of hair behind your ear, "And you're drunk"
"I'm not drunk" You argued, challenging him just as you hiccuped.
"Okay I'm a little drunk," He tilted his head at you, as you let out another whine holding your hand in between the two of you, using your thumb and pointer finger to gauge an amount, "maybe this much"
Jesse tried to hide his smile at you, holding his hand beside yours and making a sound with his tongue as he adjusted your fingers so the space between them was larger, "I think this much"
You rolled your eyes, leaning back in to kiss him as he pulled back, teasing you. Then you dropped your head, suddenly laughing when you touched your lip, “I can’t believe we have matching fat lips”
He let out a breathy laugh, unable to hide his little dimple as he watched you.
“It’s sorta like fate don’t ya think?”
"I think you should get some sleep"
"I can't go sleep," You whined, fingers grabbing for his shirt, "Not when I've been waiting for a night like this since we were kids"
Jesse leaned forward, pressing a another quick kiss to your lips, "That makes two of us"
"No way" You giggled.
"Yes way" He whispered, nodding when he pushed himself from the wall, "Why do you think Alex and I didn't get along after you started dating"
You caught his hands, swinging them slowly as he took off the wall with him.
"If I let you sleep in my bed will you keep your hands to yourself?" Jesse hummed, glancing toward his bedroom in the back of the house.
