Girl Talk
I feel a little self conscious making a text post on tumblr, but this is just something thatâs fresh on my mind and I felt like writing my thoughts down
Itâs getting better, and there are certainly exceptions, but when I analyze the media of the past 20 years that I grew up with, in general, female characters have been treated poorly. When little girls watch TV shows and movies, what are they supposed to think when the leading lady is a beautiful princess who needs to be saved by the strong male lead? When all the male characters are funny and goofy looking, and the women are svelt and sexy copy & paste models (or gross looking and used for a punchline)? When the girl character only exists to be the object of the maleâs affection? OR when the girlâs greatest goal in life is to get with the handsome guy? What are they supposed to think when all the funny, strong female leads are also all impossibly thin and cute?
I grew up with a constant subconscious feeling of being worthless because I felt that the only role I could possibly fill in the âstoryâ of my life was to be a background character. My body was unconventionally shaped and boys were not interested in me, so what purpose did I serve? These self-destructive thoughts caused self-destructive habits and a lot of pain down the line for me, until I was old enough to stop and think critically about what my mind had been fed and decipher the truth from the lies. That took a lot longer than youâd think, and by then a lot of damage was already done.
People who create content that is aimed at young audiences (kids & teens) have a huge responsibility when making casts of characters. The minds of children are like sponges and will absorb whatever you give them as truth because they havenât developed the ability to think critically yet. Not only that but children self insert into characters they identify with and all of this is happening while their brains are growing and developing.
I realize there are LOTS of issues that need to be addressed in the realm of representation in the media (such as race and sexuality), but this is the particular issue that I feel close and personal to. In real life, women have just as much variation in the way they look and behave as men do. I hope that the characters in shows and movies will start reflecting that*. Letâs see girls with big noses, stubby legs and hairy arms, because girls shouldnât have to feel ashamed of those things. Every little girl out there should have the opportunity to point to a screen and say âthat girl is strong and beautiful and she looks like me! So that means Iâm strong and beautiful, too!â
(*should mention, although the percentage is still small, Iâm really glad this starting to happen in shows like âSteven Universeâ!)
Itâs been a while! But new quarter at Uni = more opportunities to draw!
Here is a commission, specifically asking for âa drawing of two Guinea pigs with swole human arms boxing.â Look at how weird and feisty they are!

Color and Language
Many people are surprised to learn that different languages do not consider the basic colors to be the same. Some New Guinea Highland languages, for example, still have terms only for black and white (perhaps better translated as âdarkâ and âlightâ). Hanuno'o language, spoken in the Philippines, has only four basic color words: black, white, red and green. PirahĂŁ language, spoken by an Amazonian tribe, is said to have no fixed words for colors. According to linguist Dan Everett, if you show them a red cup, theyâre likely to say, âThis looks like bloodâ. Some languages have color distinctions which are, well, foreign to native English speakers:
Latin originally lacked a generic color word for âgrayâ and âbrownâ and had to borrow its words from Germanic language sources.
Biblical Hebrew had no word for blue.
Navajo has one word for both grey and brown and one for blue and green. It has two for black, however, distinguishing the color of âcoalâ from that of âdarknessâ.
Russian, Italian, and Greek  have different basic words for darker and lighter shades of blue.Â
Hungarian has two different basic red words â bordĂł (darker reds) and piros (lighter reds.)
Shona language (a Bantu language from Southern Africa) has no one word for our âgreenâ. concept; they have one word for yellowish-green, and a different word for bluish-green.
Hindi has no standard word for the color âgrayâ. However, lists for child or foreigner Hindi language learning include âsaffronâ [à€à„à€žà€°] as a basic color.
In Gaelic glas can mean both âgreyâ and âgreenââ glasbheinn is âgreen mountainâ; glais-fheur is âgreen grass.â

This reminds me of the ink spilled over the years on the phrase oinops pontos (wine dark sea) in Homer, all attempting to explain how the Ancient Greeks could possibly have thought the sea resembles wine. Explanations included: 1) no words in Archaic Greek for blue, because 2) they were collectively color-blind, 3) their wine was blue, 4) red tides/sea looks red at sunset/etc. 5) all sorts of other batshit theories. William Gladstone, better known for being a UK Prime Minister, wrote a book on this - the first, maybe? His theory was that the Ancient Greeks were more interested in light/dark than in hue, per se. But just google âHomerâ and âcolorâ and prepare to be amazed. Hereâs an article I just found that posits Ancient Greek color as essentially synaesthetic.
omg yes the wine dark sea.
#nobody explained this to me in high school#we all wrinkled our little noses and went#iâm pretty sure the sea is not wine coloured#or what the hell did ancient greeks drank?
Itâs weird - this one never bothered me. I just assumed color wasnât the important part of the comparison and all they were going for was âdark, swirly liquid,â with maybe a side of âthe sea is tempestuous and unpredictable and wine makes people tempestuous and unpredictable.â The English âwine-darkâ supports my reading more than the Greek, though - I think oinops literally means âlooks-like-wine.â Which - yeah, not sure the sea really does.
Nope, the two Hungarian word are âvörösâ (darker) and âpirosâ (more orange-y, lighter, like a poppy).
âBordĂłâ is more of a purple.
@potcpoi more ways for us to argue over color!
Yes, letâs feature in different languages to make things even more confusing.Â
