when news of emancipation reached plantations and homesteads in Texas, slaves weren't magically free. they were murdered in massive numbers because slaveholders would rather kill them than lose them. proof of their birth or purchase was burned so it would be difficult to prove they existed.

those that weren't killed were left to either continue working the land they were enslaved on.. or risk seeking safe land to live on with lynch mobs hunting them.

this is why we wear red. to symbolize the bloodshed. black for the ashes. or white for the hope they had for the future.
