"Javert scoots around until he can ease Valjeanās head into his lap. The sirenās cheek lolls against his palm, and before he can talk himself out of it, he cards his fingers through Valjeanās hair. There is silence as Valjean still struggles to breathe, though by the way his head leans further into Javertās touch, the Capitaine guesses his boldness is not unwelcome. In the darkness and the suffocating air, he is reminded of the shipwreck, of sinking gradually towards oblivion, and he wonders if this slow asphyxiation is as close as a siren can come to drowning."
