On Reacting to Volume 2

Okay, so, I made a decision to... not... conventionally liveblog V2. Instead, I basically, er, made live reactions to it on my personal Discord server with some of my friends. Actual live commentary on a Discord channel, to sum it up.

So I’m going to be posting screenshots of said messages and commentary along with screenshots from the episodes, all bundled up and queued. 

I mostly did this because I wanted to watch through RWBY faster, since I have my own life stuff to deal with (online school’s starting up tomorrow, sigh). I understand if people get disappointed.

However, I will be back to normal, regular liveblogging for V3 - except with only one episode per day rather than sudden, jarring binge-sessions, because... new year, new school term. And I wanted to find some sort of proper, like, actual schedule and structure when it comes to my online hobbies. 

End my life.

The Jaune arc if you will got a lot of flack when it first aired primarily because the FNDM was getting these very short episodes a week apart and it was a four episode departure from the four badass girls everyone was watching the show for. The episodes seem to get a much better reaction from livebloggers viewing them binge style like you did.

Oh, that’s what @zr-stein told me, too. In retrospect, that makes sense.

You're not the first to have problems with how Weiss' side of things played out, but I feel like it makes sense for her character. Her problem with Faunus derives wholly from her experience with the White Fang. So the fact that she's known Blake for months and found her stopping a White Fang robbery gave her reason to start breaking that connection in her head. An actual apology would have been nice, but that's not Weiss. She'll work to fix herself but "I'm sorry" will not leave her lips.

That’s fair! Still. More onscreen development would have been nice.

Funny story about that Penny fight. One of the writers, Miles, wanted to set a rule that this early in the show no kid could take down a vehicle solo, to put a bit of a limit on Monty's Rule of Cool tendencies. That... was obviously not followed with Penny. Miles didn't get a chance to review the fight until it was too late. Specifically, when they sat down to record the DVD commentary. Cue shocked laughter and "MONTY WHY?"

Tbh most of the fandom considers V1 and V2 to be seasons with less..quality to it, so seeing you enjoy it so much makes me wonder what's going to be your reaction when the show gets REAL 👐

Congrats on making it through the Jaunedice/Forever Fall arc, largely considered the worst part of RWBY. It's all uphill from here.

It... wasn’t honestly that bad? I mean, it was clunky, but it was okay? I liked Jaune and Pyrrha’s interactions, although Cardin was... boring.

And that’s the end of Volume 1. Honestly, this episode was, like, so good? But also, Weiss’ sudden “I’m now not racist anymore, actually” was kind of... weird, and also not entirely challenged and properly developed, so that was stunted and awkward, among other things. I give it a 7.8/10.

As for the Volume overall...? Man. Man, this was an AWESOME first series, like, holy shiiiiiit, I’m already invested. Buuuut not invested enough... I need more. MORE. LIKE SO MUCH MORE. GIVE ME THAT GODDAMN BACKSTORY. THAT WORLD. I need a LARGE AS HELL TIMELINE, something that can really get into the goddamn nit and grit of all the main characters. I need MORE YANG, DAMMIT, AND BLAKE TOO. Give me the details on the Schnees! Just how far is their reach? What can they do, as a company? And Ruby, oh my god, we need more Ruby, and JAUNE, and EVERYTHING. I want to get right into Volume 2. SHOW ME WHY THERE ARE SO MANY CROSSOVER FICS, DAMMIT, SHOW ME WHY PEOPLE MAKE TIME TRAVEL FIX-ITS.

OVERALL VOLUME SCORE: 8.62/10

You know, I was half expecting Blake to offer Weiss top-secret information about the leader of the White Fang (at least, that’s who I’m assuming that guy she was with was) and the operations she used to be privy to.

And like, y’know, talk about why, where, and how she left them? Because she... stole the train car full of dust? Why is this not being discussed?
