another virus gal! this time based on the you are an idiot trojan!

!!BEWARE OF FLASHING LIGHTS WHEN SEARCHING ABOUT THIS!!

this one's pretty interesting and very visually striking! it was a browser based sorta-malware in the 2000s-2010s occasionally called a pop-up bomb. if you went to the page, it would abuse the way your browser was able to open tabs and quickly completely filled your screen with popups. it even had some little tricks! it would spawn six new windows every time a user attempted to close one and disabled standard hotkeys like Alt+F4. the origin is of the original program is completely unknown.

unlike the ILOVEYOU worm, the you are an idiot doesn't actually do damage. the worst it can do is lag out your computer and make you restart it. the only way for it to actually cause damage is if you had something open when you opened it and hadn't saved.

actually encountered this little jumpscare myself as a kid online! it was one of my favorite things tbh. showed it to everyone.

the iloveyou worm was a virus that began infecting computers in May of 2000. it was created by a Filipino student, Onel de Guzman. the victim would get an email (likely from the real email of a friend who had already been infected) with the subject line “ILOVEYOU” and an attached “love letter” which was actually the virus. once the attachment was opened, the malware ran, stealing your login info, replacing all your files with copies of itself (effectively deleting them) then uses the victim’s email to send itself to everyone in their contacts, spreading further. patches were eventually developed and the spread was stopped but not before it did billions of dollars of damage. (also, fun fact! the guy who made the virus wasn’t charged for anything besides wire fraud because at the time, the Philippines didn’t have any cybercrime laws yet)

of course since the virus masqueraded as a love letter, there are a lot of hearts in her design (she also has cartoony cupid wings). some are obvious like the hearts in her eye and the center of her shawl but there are some subtle ones like how her buns are heart-esque. i also intentionally made her design top heavy to give more heart vibes. i also tried to reference the virus’ spread, how one victim would spread it to everyone in their contacts, which is why i added the spikes coming from her buns!

since the virus originated in the Philippines, i wanted to incorporate that into her design. the shawl she’s wearing is a called an alampay, a traditional Filipino garment that i’m kinda obsessed with because of how fun the shape is! (also the back of hers is heart shaped)

because the original virus was a trojan (malware that outwardly appears to be a normal file/program) i knew i wanted to give her two forms, an innocent looking “passive” form and a more unsettling “active” form (note that the folder on her eye is open in the scary form, since it only activates once the file is open). i was initially going to go with something a bit more generic but after doing more research on the Phillipines i found the manananggal, a folklore creature not dissimilar to a vampire that has a normal body during the day but detaches its upper body to hunt at night and i thought that was perfect! there’s probably more i forgot lol.

the design might be tweaked a bit, i have more ideas but feel free to tell me yours as well!
