it's just me and you

"Can you just please tell me what's wrong?" Pearl begged, demanded, questioned as Namor turned his back on her again, distraught and lost with the threat of having the waters exploited once more.

"Kuya, you have to tell me what's going on!"

"I will not drag you into this."

"I am already dragged!" She raises her voice and he stills, stopping in his tracks and he looks at her. "I am your sister! Let me help you!"

He shakes his head firmly, "no."

She gasps, he never tells her no, he made sure nobody tells her no so why is he being like this now?

"You know damn well I'll end up by your side fighting whatever troubles the waters, so might as well tell me!" She walks to him and turns him around forcefully, "she let me live again for this very reason—"

She stops herself when she sees his eyes glisten with threatening tears.

"And that is what I am afraid of."

"Of what?"

"That she will take you afterwards." She blinks as if refusing to recognize her sister can be that cruel. "You don't know her like I do, Pearl."

"I've survived worse, kuya, you know that." She says, gentler this time at his now refusal that the eldest can be this kind, "this one won't be any different."

"But I feel it!" He hisses and she almost back away with the fury in his face, not because of the cause but because of what might happen. He sits at a bench, "I can feel her."

Her shoulders relax, demeanor calm, "it's because I will give her new bodies."

He scoffs at her attempt to appease him, she sits beside him, hugging him and leaning on his arm as if to imprint her warmth and presence on him.

Like she is immortal like him.

"What's stopping you from doing it? It's been long overdue anyway," she rests her chin atop his shoulder and he glances at her, like looking at her hurts, like she's a memory, "your war on the surface world should've happened way before."

He takes her hand and puts it on his cheek, not minding that the hand that cause deaths after deaths is what gives him life.

"You're right," he tells her then looks at her bright face.

"Lay it all out," she smiles, "it's just me and you."

The price Namor paid to permanently keep his oceans and people safe is the price he never expected to make.

As he holds Pearl's bloodied face, her body almost torn apart, her hand limp on her open abdomen, a signal that she tried bending her blood and body back together.

He hiccups as he scoots closer, the light in the eyes of the light of his life slowly escaping her.

It wasn't supposed to be like this.

It wasn't supposed to be her.

"Pearl? Kiik?" Gentle, for the last time he would hold her. "I'm here." Like it's supposed to be a comfort.

He tries tilting her head to his direction. And she fights to focus, to look at the reason why she even lived in the first place, why she was granted this, but she can't.

She can feel her.

Looming. Waiting. Patient.

"It's okay, we're okay," A lie to comfort no one, he caresses the hair out of her forehead, the place he always kisses to assure her. Pearl's head limps to the other side but he brings her back to look at her.

His heart. The only one he's certain he loves. His last link to his humanity and past.

He blinks back his tears, he can have time to cry and mourn her later. He can't even tell her that they have time, that she can catch her breath, that he will take her to the healers and her scientist friends to patch her up.

He will always have the time. He, however, will never have her again. And she made sure of it.

One thing about the three of them is that they will and could never lie.

To even think that he will have to mourn Pearl, his sister who will do everything for him including dying, kills him all the same. Take me with you, he longs to beg, to scream.

But can he really even demand her to live again? She cannot even keep her body together any longer.

He tries to smile for her, and it feels like it was only yesterday when she was a toddler, when she allowed her her last life, trying to copy his smile when he laughed at something she did. Pearl seemed to be steady at the sight of his smile.

He further cradles her face, as if his warmth is enough to repel Death from taking what is long overdue to be hers.

"Will you look at me please?"

It took Pearl's last fading strength to do so, Death walking closer to relieve her of her pain, Namor seeing the green all around her.

"It's just me and you."

She took her then.

The life of his life leaves her body, and with it, her light that shone so brightly in Namor's life.

His world is dark again.

Pearl looks down to her body, gasping to see it whole and intact.

"You're finally awake."

She turns around quickly at the sound of her voice.

Then it dawns on her, I'm dead.

Her shoulders slumped, thinking of the brother she had to leave. Again. All alone in the world she sacrificed to keep him and his oceans safe. She intakes the air, new and clean, her heart beating inside her.

The feeling of fighting to breathe and look seems so foreign to her now.

Pearl stands up and faces her sister.

They never knew her as fair. Namor never regarded her as such despite being king of the underworld. And yet she thinks Death, Rio is just.

That despite it all, Pearl is glad to be able to look at Rio's face longer than the eldest ever allowed.

She waits until the acceptance sinks in the youngest's face. The face she did not want to stare for far too long or else she would've taken her earlier than she's supposed to, the sister she could not wait to have but have to lend to her brother whose destiny is to bring her right back into her doorstep.

"It's me and you now."

Pearl's eyes sparkle at the acknowledgement her sister made, but her smile is sad, knowing the cost to be with her sister after so long is leaving her brother behind.

Her light will now shine the below he could never access.

"Come."

She follows.

V. Powers

Thunder and Lightning

— Rio: in Ep 8, after Agatha exited the Witches' Road, Rio was already causing atmospheric disturbance especially with thunder, this is one of her many powers stated in her wiki:

Weather Manipulation: Death can create and control powerful storms, with the storm clouds tinted green.

— Namor: fully from the comics, I saw this post from Imperius Rex which basically means that Namor can bend/redirect lightning, also check his original post from which I qrt-ed it from!

Flight

— Namor: self-explanatory since he was born with wings on his ankles, and as per my post in part I:

I could swim in the sky

To continue on the build-up to Rio:

ears that pointed to the clouds [...] breathe the air our ancestors breathed

— Rio: her Flight-related powers are:

Levitation: Upon being knocked to the ground, Death was able to lift herself back up to her feet without pushing herself up with her hands. She was also able to fly down from Harkness’s roof during their duel.

And

Air Manipulation: Death can manipulate the currents of air around her and concentrate them into a focused blast. She was able to create powerful blasts of wind

Their connection: Namor's wings and lightning redirection = Rio's flight and storm/thunder creation

I already mentioned immortality in part I, but I'll still copy paste what's on their wiki

Rio:

Amortality: As the embodiment of death, Death itself cannot die, since it is not truly alive.

Namor:

Longevity: Unique in his people, due to his mutant physiology, Namor is able to live much longer than any other Talokanil

Superhuman Strength for Rio then Namor

Death has been shown to hold a superhuman amount of physical strength, allowing her to throw people of equal height to her with a single hand.

Namor possesses immense superhuman strength, numerous times stronger than any other Talokanil. According to M'Baku, Namor's physical strength might rival that of Hulk.

Superhuman Agility

In tandem with her air manipulation, Death can move at incredible speeds and is capable of jumping off of walls.

In both water and land, Namor possesses naturally more agility, equilibrium, balance and body coordination than a normal human and most of his species. He is able to perform superhuman and acrobatic feats in air and in water.

Superhuman Durability

Death is unable to be harmed. Death was able to sustain multiple attacks without any bleeding or injuries.

Namor's skin, muscle, and bone tissue [...] mak[ing] him nigh-invulnerable. [...] Namor did not seem to receive any form of physical damage. Even when dehydrated and without water nearby, he was able to withstand multiple attacks from Black Panther.

Healing

At the end of her fight [...], Death licked the witch's hand where it had been cut, healing the wound.

Regenerative: his metabolism enabled him to rapidly regenerate damaged bodily tissue with great speed. After having his back completely burned [...], Namor was able to regenerate shortly after.

Telepathy - this one shocked me for Namor, I thought he didn't have this power

Death has the ability to mentally interact with others, Death can read minds, communicate telepathically and experience the memories and thoughts of others.

Aquatic: Like any other Talokanil, Namor can mentally communicate with marine life and persuade them to do his bidding.

VI. Aesthetics

Green

— Rio: again, self-explanatory since she's THE original green witch with a capital g

Green craft is about the cycle of all living things, growth and decay in constant flow

I also wanted to copy paste some from her wiki that mentions her color

Magical Energy Manipulation: Death can manifest and control raw magical energy from her body, which appears as green light.

Energy Projection: Death was able to blast Harkness with magical green energy during their duel at the latter's house.

Earth Magic: Death, as the original Green Witch, was the first user of Earth Magic.

Fire Manipulation: [...] When taking Nicholas Scratch's soul to the afterlife, Death lit a torch with green fire so that she would be visible to him.

— Namor: also self-explanatory with the amount of jade he and his people wear and its significance to Mayan history of sacred water and regeneration which are all connected to him

Throne

— Namor: another self-explanatory because he's king, plus the inscription on his throne translates to the jade tooth bites

— Rio: I saw a fanart of Agathario wherein they are sitting in her throne which is similar to Namor's throne of an open jaw clad with teeth. So I looked at the comics mentioned and this is the only image I found:

Crown

This is where my tinfoil hat was the strongest, I likened the two just because of the directions their crown/headdress was facing (to the right)

Cloak and coat embellishment

Another strong tinfoil hat moment the longer I rewatched the Doomsday trailer because I know his coat was very familiar-looking (#bringbacknamorsjade)

* animal/familiar

— Rio: I didn't put this in bullet form since we didn't get her tarantula Victoria since the show but it was widely talked about

Ortiz's illustrations also include a tarantula companion that would have accompanied Death

I had a lot of fun painting the tarantula!

— Namor: clearly the feathered serpent with his status as K'uk'ulkan

I find it cute how both of them has "animals"

Just something I noticed while trying to get screencaps for the posts. This is also a fun callback to a) connection to water and b) plant = life I did in part I where Fen and her people went to the water for a second chance in life while Agatha gave birth to a life from Death

* theme songs

Yes, even their main/theme songs sound similar to me, I made two audio edits to it last January 11 which I might upload some time in the future (here or twitter) because I'm this crazy. The similar parts are when the song starts getting louder and almost climatic

Taking a life

— Agatha (for Rio), ep 8:

You call what you did special treatment? You gave me nothing. You took.

— Shuri (for Namor):

She's dead. She's gone. Namor drowned her right in front of me!

Scar

— Rio, ep 4:

A long time, I loved someone and I had to do something I did not want to do even though it was my job and it hurt them. She is my scar.

— Namor: all caused by Shuri in their battle

Antagonist

I thought it'd be fitting to put their role in their respective media with/in relation to the ships

I would classify her as an antagonist.

— Namor: from a Coogler interview

I think this is self-explanatory HAHAHA him looking up when Shuri said afterlife, is Rio descending to him/Talokan? 😆

namorio: death siblings part I

aka lady death & godking of the underworld

— born out of my immense love for namor, then rio, until i started seeing their connections 💚 also because i have been connecting them both but separately to pearl pangan

aka let the tinfoil hat wearing begin!

I. Death and GodKing of the Underworld

— Rio: cosmic entity already born at the dawn of time, roughly 13.8 billion years ago

— Namor: born in 1571 as the firstborn son and mutant of Talokan praised and revered as K'uk'ulkan, the Feathered Serpent God "of this realm and the realm below"

↪️ from BPWF: obviously because he's been around since 1500s, but I like that this seemingly sounds like "at the dawn of time" type of existence considering their world is forever altered by Spanish colonization

↪️ I like that him being crowned as king can also be due to Fen being a princess in the comics. Also with what Coogler said:

He was made king before he was even born; it was something he didn't have a choice in, it was destiny

Their connection: Underworld = Death

in Namor's wiki, this is what's stated about Talokan

[...] Aztec stories his father had once told her, including of the Aztec underworld paradise Tlālōcān, which inspired him in the naming of their underwater paradise, with the translation into their tongue of Yucatec Maya, "Talokan."

from Talokan's wiki:

Talokan is based on Tlālōcān, one of the underworld realms in the Aztec codices ruled by the Rain God Tlāloc. It is a paradise for the souls of those who died of a water or a storm-related death. In the comics, Tláloc is the Storm God of the Tēteoh.

which ties in with what the old lady said regarding seeking him:

Others who have searched for him with ill in their hearts have never returned. Lost to the depths forever.

II. Mesoamerica origins

— Namor: born from a Yucatec Mayan mother and Aztec father, speaks Mayan with Talokan clearly named after the Aztec underworld paradise translated from Nahuatl

— Rio: per a Variety interview with Jac Schaeffer:

Giovanna came in with the Dia de los Muertos [look] and having her be Latinx

I know Mesoamerica =/= Latin America (at least not all) but I wanted to concentrate on Rio having a Dia de los Muertes look.

Dia de los Muertes - Day of the Dead in Mexico deeply rooted in Indigenious (Aztec) Mesoamerican tradition

La/Santa Muerte - The/Holy Death also rooted in Mesoamerican belief particularly the Aztec goddes of death Mictecacihuatl

The Aztec god of death Mictlantecuhtli was mentioned for the first time, although briefly, in Wonder Man ep 1:

I don't mind that it's mixed with Catholic belief/practice since both Namor and Rio's names are in Spanish too, which is the race that brought the mentioned Abrahamic religion in their continent/s

Since Mictlantecuhtli rules over the Mictlan, the final resting place, I like the imagery of Namor causing deaths by water and sea until Rio takes them to rest

[I'm honestly still confused if the two mentioned gods are just one even if the latter link separated them to Lady and Lord, which makes sense since Rio is also called Lady Death, but I'm sticking to the central theme of (Aztec) God of Death]

Their connection: Mesoamerican Gods of Death/Underworld

In the former link, one of the skeleton figurines don a skirt with an:

image of a cactus with an eagle perched atop it eating a serpent

which I just find cute since Namor is revered as the feathered serpent god

III. Connection to water

(pspsps pearl pangan)

— Namor: godking of an underwater civilization

— Rio: her name Rio Vidal translates to River of Life

Their connection: river of life = underwater civilization -> water = re/birth

Fen took the vibranium-laced potion to save her baby Cha'ah Toh and because of the persuasive words of their shaman, when they awoken from their long slumber, they needed the oxygen from the water to breathe

Their lives, their existence there ended — Namor

↪️ in a way, the Mayans were given a second chance at life but at sea

Now, for the actual births

We see Fen giving birth to her baby Cha'ah Toh at sea, fulfilling the shaman's words of her son being the firstborn of Talokan

We see Agatha giving birth to Nicky near a body of water which is what Rio's name translates to, in the same scene, we also see Rio approaching her with a flower in hand intending to do her duty as Death

Out of her love for Agatha and their son, she bestowed for the first and last time a special treatment no one ever had in history: to give Nicky time

I was also realizing just now, how Namor being a mutant combined with their vibranium in his body gives him a life long enough that Death lets him take his time, Nicky, the son of Death, lived in borrowed time and there was nothing she could do to change it, and she said it herself: it must be

Her dedication to her duty to take what has to be taken was once outweighed by love, but it cannot last. Just like how Namor's dedication to his people led him to do what he never wanted in the first place

IV. Life

As mentioned in part III how Namor's people were given a second life at sea, his birth marked and created the underwater civilization/kingdom where his people thrive and live long lives away from war, disease, and a hateful language.

His mother's people had to "die" in order to live again.

Which ties in with the following quotes:

Out of death, life

- Agatha, AAA Ep 8

I know she was thinking of Nicky here because his other parent is basically Rio aka Death, but the same rang true for Namor's people being "reborn" and born as Talokanils; which I connected to

Death is not the end

- King T'challa, CACW

I think it's fitting to add him here since Namor is technically part of the BP/WFverse along with Wakanda's ancestral plane where the souls of the deceased rest + it truly was not the end for the Fen's people

Now for Rio, it is self-explanatory with the lines she said in the series:

I am the natural order of all things

In the end, all roads lead to me

Everything leads back to her because she is the natural cycle of life and death, and though everything must come to an end aka her, the decay of all living things, a new life starts from it, from her which is what and who Nicky symbolizes -> Agatha's mentioned quote

Plants and flowers symbolizing life

I also realized the dandelion on the last trial and the flowers on her deathbed caused by Rio, can be similar to Chaac leading the shaman to a plant sprouting from a blue rock; both symbolizing life just in a different scale of personal love and salvation of a people

Balance of Life

— Rio: in Ep8, she discussed at length with Agatha how Billy

[...] is an abomination, he is disrupting the sacred balance;

What he wants from the road is a violaton;

His brother isn't out there, not yet anyway; the son of the Scarlet Witch stole a second life, I can't let him do the same for his twin, I have to take him

When Agatha and Billy got out of the last trial and when Billy gave some of his powers to revive Agatha's own, this is what Rio said:

I'll let you decide, one of you stays with me, the other walks free

↪️ which is still consistent with her earlier dialogue of Billy stealing a second life hence taking him/giving himself up will mean he won't be able to do it again for his twin this time, but since he already did with the help of Agatha, Rio needs/has to restore what Billy disrupted aka the sacred balance she's responsible for by taking a life to fill in what he stole

— Namor: he made it clear that endagering Talokan and its people begets retaliation to Wakanda

[...] or if I discover a single Wakandan ship in the ocean, I will kill the princess. I will come to Wakanda and I will kill you

↪️ which he did fulfill when he returns to find the dead guard and a dying Abha after he spoke with Ramonda who threatened to expose Talokan and whose orders caused his people's deaths

To Namor, anyone who is a threat to his people's safety should be eliminated which is why he wants to burn the world with Shuri whose nation is also at risk due to the resources it has. He reiterated that if Wakanda didn't join them against the surface world

I will wash Wakanda from the face of the Earth

↪️ During this scenario, Wakanda is now a direct threat to Talokan. To him, it does not matter who or what a person's rank is, his people is above them all because he is responsible for them just like Rio is responsible for the cycle of all living things. (Unintentionally) Killing the queen and wreaking havoc to Wakanda is his way of avenging the deaths of his two people and the threat to exposing his nation

To kill Queen Ramonda was never his plan. It was a reaction because they killed a couple of girls of Namor's kingdom, and it was just a punishment. 'You kill people, I kill your people'.

Their connection: Rio -> Agatha for Billy and the restoration of the sacred balance; Namor -> attack to Wakanda for the guard, Abha, and Talokan's safety

* water = also death

I noticed a small parallel between the death scenes during the mentioned events, and how what Agatha and Billy said rang true even for Namor and Ramonda's situation:

He floats, he looks down — Agatha

He's gonna drown, it's a bad place - Billy

I equated Namor killing Ramonda by water/flood to Billy choosing a drowning boy for Tommy's soul to transfer to which Rio rectified later on, both figures restoring the balance of what they are responsible for

To expound a little, Namor took a life for the guard and Abha is like Billy who took a life/body for Tommy, both by the way of water with Namor's hydrobombs and Billy's choice for a drowning boy

Their connection: give and take of life

Immortality

— Rio: self-explanatory as a cosmic entity

Agatha telling Billy on Ep8:

This is futile. You know it. We can't fight Death.

— Namor:

He ages slower -> he is not in a hurry to meet Death and Death is not in a hurry to come get him

Also, I saw a post regarding lobster's immortality and how Namor had lobsters on the golden plate of his garment/cape, which I directly linked to Rio of course (I know he's clearly not immune to death since Shuri almost killed him but the concept of him+immortality is fun to play with in my connection of him with Rio)

I wanted to add a little tidbit from the original BPWF script that he once saved a couple's life which is the narrating old lady and her husband, I just think it's cute in a way he also does save the people of his mother's land

I have four more sections to go but since the photos are limited, I will separate it in part II
