“Yep, really. I tried not to be, but I can’t help it. The thought that I might finally get out of the house for more than doctor’s appointments… it’s honestly on the same level as when I first went to high school.”
“That definitely sounds like the best Christmas present ever, leaving the house. I’m so happy for you. How long do you think until you have total freedom?”
“My doctor gave me the all clear to go back to school next semester, so… that’s some news.”
“Wait, really? That’s amazing, Tessa! You must be awfully excited for that.”
“I had to listen to another holiday lecture from mother dearest. It’s your turn to help with dinner. I’m sneaking out to.. I don’t know, join the circus or something fun.”
“Ugh, they’ll stop one day, I’m sure. I can help, but I’d rather join you and maybe be a circus groupie. If that sort of thing exists.”
“I never used to understand Scrooge and his ability to ‘bah humbug’ during the holidays… Until now.”
“Nova? What happened?”

Believe me, I’m the last person who thought I’d be saying it, but One Direction is honestly some good music to work to. Basically this is my way of letting you know what you’re in for if you take that seat.
I never thought I would be one to agree with that statement, but it really is true. Who knew it could be so motivational?

“Mhm, now I’m starting to work on writing again, and I mean… if things keep going well I might be able to tie my own shoelaces one day.”
“That’s so exciting. Have you been able to write any full words out? You’ll definitely be able to tie your own shoelaces again one day. Hopefully even one day soon. And it’ll all just keep getting better for you as time goes by.”
“I went to PetSmart. No, I’m kidding. I went to the Golden Pacific Market in Chinatown to try to make my own spring rolls after tasting them during the summer fair there. This girl I met in the fair took me to the market and picked out crickets instead of shrimp. I couldn’t just back down…And, screw healthy in this case. They’re like oatmeal cookies when you want chocolate chip. A disappointment.”
“Oh, wow, really? That’s pretty incredible. I don’t think I have the guts to try something like crickets. Seriously, good on you for managing to stomach that, though. Yeah, chocolate chip definitely trumps oatmeal raisin, always. I don’t know why people bother with healthy when there are options that are just so much more delicious.”
“I kind of picked up a pen today. So… that’s exciting, I guess.”
“Wait, really? Oh, Tessa, that’s such great news!” Marina hugged her older sister, smiling proudly at her.
“I couldn’t imagine crickets being my thing, but they were surprisingly good…as unappetizing as it sounds being said out loud. And, exactly. That’s why I will never understand why people replace ice cream with fro-yo.”
“Crickets, really? What’s the story behind that? I can’t imagine a world where crickets would taste good, though. Yeah, no, fro-yo may be healthier or whatever they’re claiming now, but ice cream is irreplaceable.”
“I think you answered your own question with your earlier point that people are awful. They think things like this give them an excuse to behave like animals without consequence, so they take full advantage.”
“I guess I did. I honestly don’t know when people are worse: in the bleachers of a football game or in a mall on Black Friday. They all just act like savages.”
“Maybe my heart’s three sizes too small or something. It’s like dragging nails down a chalkboard. I’d hope not, I don’t want to endorse beating yourself over the head with a brick.”
“Well, yikes. I wouldn’t want to be in your position. I’m pretty sure constant pen clicking or the sound that happens when people who keep sipping through straws even when the drinks are completely gone are worse than nails down a chalkboard. You sure? It might be a great way to stop others from playing Christmas carols so early. That sounds like a pretty ideal situation for you.”
“The only Candy Cane overload i’d be okay with are the ones that are Jolly Rancher Flavored. I’m not big on peppermint.”
“That’s fair. I’ve never really liked the jolly rancher flavored ones, but to each their own, I guess. Peppermint’s easily one of the best flavors out there, to me, though. It pairs pretty great with chocolate.”
“How is it that Black Friday starts on Thursday, and you can get everything on the internet, but I still have to deal with pushy jackasses who can’t wait five seconds for a stupid blender or whatever the hell?”
“It’s because some people in general are just pretty awful. You bring up a good point, though: I don’t really understand why people bother waking up in the early hours of the morning to stand in the freezing cold so they can get good deals when literally everything’s online now, though. Do people think that the blender prices will be different or something?”
“Fucking Christmas carols… Joy and good will, more like a concussion from beating myself over the head with a damn brick.”
“But is it really that bad? I mean, some songs can be annoying after a while, sure, but they’ve never driven me to that point.”
“I didn’t mind it before, now I do. It’s just over glorified. It’s like peppermint during the winter.”
“Peppermint in the winter’s nice, too. I don’t see anything wrong with a candy cane overload.”
