They all ended up at boarding school for different reasons, but they ended becoming a makeshift family of their own. And thank goodness for that, because they might not survive the school year without each other.

Nine-year-old Spencer Reid is brilliant, but he's too young to fully grasp the trauma threatening to bury him. Alex Blake buried her nine-year-old son and accepted that she just wasn't meant to be a mother. The BAU team takes on a case that ends up throwing them together, and Spencer is sent to live with Alex and her husband, and everything changes.

Spencer Reid grew up too fast, too harsh, too lonely. His "intellect is a shield which protects him from his emotions" and for a long time he thought he could be just fine without connections. After all, he learned quickly how to survive as an eight-year-old in high school, as a child prodigy in college, as a fatherless kid taking care of his mother while she couldn't take care of him. He could rely on his intelligence, instead of feelings. Once he joined the BAU, however, the team quickly formed their own ideas.

I've been trying to figure out a way to make some extra money to help cover my IVF copays (and hopefully give me some extra income and extra time to stay home with my baby once they're earth side.) So I've started a side hustle doing embroidery, mostly local and on Etsy, but I wanted to offer some fandom exclusive designs here on Tumblr! You can place an order through this google form and I'll get back to you with an email confirmation and an invoice. And I can also do custom embroidery, just send me a message! At the moment I'm just offering bag tags and tote bags, but if you want something else like a tee shirt or even something I don't offer, I'm always willing to give things a try!
Also I might be a little bonkers, but I'm also offering designs based on Patron Saint of Lost Causes and Pas de Deux. So if you want a bag tag or tote bag for St. Thaddeus School, Lincoln House, or Fittes Ballet School, you came to the right place!

This was a little Spencer character study that I wrote fairly early on, and it's still one of the things I'm proudest of writing- I think my style was really finding a footing in this.
This was my very first attempt at writing the Blake family. It just didn't seem to be working but I wasn't sure why- but Brenna (@thesassprincess) was instrumental in shaping the Blake family into the way they are now. They work so much better after development and I'm honestly very attached!
(also Ned and Charlie are basically Ned and Chuck from Pushing Daisies so...just imagine them)
-------
James pulled into his driveaway and turned off the car. “All right, everybody, we’re here,” he said. “Emily, how’re you doing, champ?”
Emily covered her face with her hands. “I’m not gonna puke at the moment, but we’ll have to see about later,” she said.
Spencer wrestled with his seatbelt. “I can’t get out of this,” he complained, mashing at the buckle button. The belt sat too high on his small body, almost running across his neck. “Can you help me?”
“Oh, yeah, there’s a trick to it,” James said. “Hold on, hold on.” He got out of the driver’s seat and crossed to Spencer’s door as Dave’s car pulled up and parked behind him. “Here, just do that and- yeah, you got it.”
Alex slid out of the front passenger seat. She’d left her hair down, held back from her face by a thin headband, and it looked like pure copper in the sunlight. James swallowed hard and focused on helping Spencer climb down from the backseat, his ripped blazer draped neatly over his arm.
Dave closed his car door as Penelope and JJ tumbled out of the backseat, nearly bowling over Derek and Hotch in their haste. “I heard you have a dog!” Penelope shrieked. “Where is he? Where’s the puppy?”
James grinned. “I think he’s inside,” he said. “Come on, let’s go see him. I think he’ll be happy to have company.”
He walked up the drive to the front door, his keys jingling in his hand. The Lincoln kids had been complaining all morning about how chilly and rainy it was at three in the morning; now it was hot and oppressively humid, making his shirt collar cling to the back of his neck.
He had barely turned the key in the lock and opened the door when he heard his mom calling his name. “Hey, it’s us,” he called back as she rounded the corner into the entryway. “Everybody, this is my mom, Charlotte. Mom, this is-”
“Wait, wait, let me guess,” Charlotte said. She went down the line, guessing their names accurately until she hesitated at JJ and Penelope. “I’m not sure which one you are.”
“Penelope is the one with the accessories.”
“Oh! Then you’re Penelope, and you’re JJ,” she said. “And of course I know David and Alexandra.”
Suddenly a little yip echoed down the hall; the faint jingling of his dog’s collar and the scritch of his nails on the floor grew considerably louder as he hurtled towards him. “Puppy!” Penelope shrieked. Emily covered her ears.
“Hey, buddy, you coming to make friends?” James said as his excitable beagle jumped up and down, yelping at top volume.
“Oh, he’s so cute,” Penelope cooed. “Look at him. Look how cute he is.”
“Yeah, he’s cute,” Hotch said, scratching him behind the ears. “What’s his name?”
“Bagel,” Dave said dryly, patting the beagle on the head.
“Blake. You named your beagle Bagel?” Derek said. “Seriously?”
“What? I thought it was fun,” he shrugged.
“Speaking of fun,” Alex said. “I don’t think everybody’s a dog fan.”
“Aw, little miss crawdad doesn’t like the puppy?” Derek teased.
“I’m not afraid of dogs. I just have a healthy respect for them,” JJ objected. Spencer nodded.
James grabbed Bagel’s leash from the hook by the door and handed it to Penelope. “How about you guys take him on a walk?” he suggested.
“Yes, please!” Penelope said. “Would you like that, you precious darling angel? Yes, you would!”
Charlotte turned to Spencer. “So I heard you needed your blazer fixed,” she said. He nodded. “Let’s take a look at it. If I can’t fix it, I pulled down some of James’s old uniform pieces from the attic. Although...he was a bit bigger than you when he was in ninth grade.”
Spencer stayed quiet as Charlotte led him into the living room. Then again, he’d been quiet since they’d ambushed him. Maybe they shouldn’t have surprised him like they did.
And then again, Spencer was currently wearing a well-washed tee shirt with bleach stains on the left sleeve, red shorts, and his school dress shoes. There wasn’t really another option. And at least his mom was good with skittish little kids- she’d been teaching kindergarten since before he was born.
James started to follow them, but Alex caught him by the arm and tugged him aside, unnoticed by the others. “We have a problem,” she said in a low voice.
“What? What kind of problem?” he said.
She kept her hand on his arm. “Did you see where the seatbelt was hitting Spencer?” she said.
“Yeah, it was right at his throat, kind of…” His voice trailed off as he caught on. “Oh. Oh, no. He’s gonna hate it.”
“He needs it, though,” she said. “He’s too little to ride in a car without one.”
James sighed. “I think there’s one in the garage,” he said. “My cousins left it behind after they visited this summer.”
Alex squeezed his forearm. “You’re the best, Blake,” she said. “I’m going to go check on JJ and warn her before she meets Banjo.”
“Listen, Bagel is a lot, but everybody loves Banjo, she’ll be fine,” he said. She laughed, her fingertips grazing his inner elbow as she let go and slipped into the living room. He sighed.
Luckily, the booster seat was easy to find in the garage. Unluckily, it took him way too long to figure out how to get it correctly set up in the backseat of his car. After more than a half dozen mumbled curses and a YouTube tutorial, he managed to figure it out and retreated inside to the air conditioning.
He found Spencer gingerly holding out his arms as Charlotte pinned his old uniform blazer to fit; Alex and JJ sat on the couch with his parents’ elderly dog Banjo cuddled between them. “See? I told you everybody loves Banjo,” he said.
JJ petted the top of his head and he whuffed at her pleasantly. “He’s pretty cute, I guess,” he said. “What kind of dog is he?”
“Half cocker spaniel, half dachshund,” James said. “So basically he just looks like a stretched-out spaniel.”
Charlotte placed a last pin in the fabric. “I think that’ll do,” she said. “Take it off carefully, sweetie, I don’t want you to get stuck.”
“How soon do you think it’ll take before it’s ready?” James asked.
“We’ll see,” she said. “I’ll give it to you to bring to Spencer as soon as it’s done.”
Spencer smiled, a little hesitantly. “Thank you,” he offered.
“Any time,” she said, folding his jacket carefully over her arm. “Now, you kids better run, I’m sure you have lots of things you want to do before you make it back to campus. Just let me borrow my boy for a moment.”
James frowned as Alex herded the younger kids out of the room. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
Charlotte put her hands on her hips. “Where is that child’s mother?” she said.
hi i just wanted to say that you are one of my absolute favorite writers (i mean overall, not just fanfic writers) and your writing has brought me so much joy and comfort over the years. there are certain lines from your fics that live in my mind all of the time. you’ve inspired me to try writing stories myself (for the first time since i was a kid! i’m still too shy to post anything, but maybe someday). thank you so much for sharing your work, and i hope you know how much it is appreciated.
oh my goodness. this makes me SO so emotional. and so happy!! I am so so glad that my writing is special to you, I always hope that people enjoy reading what I've written and it means so much to me that it's stuck with you. and definitely keep writing!!! share whenever you feel ready, maybe there's someone out there who needs to see it!!
I recently got the clip of Robin cracking the Russian code from s3 of stranger things in my YouTube feed and just envisioned a scene with Alex based on that one fill you did of them watching s4 of stranger things.
I can just see alex immediately accidentally spoiling what the code says to the psolc gang while theyre watching and some are annoyed by it and others probably wanted her to do it in the first place. Also her getting frustrated with Steve and Dustin not having a clue about russian. I feel like robin would be one of her favorite characters.
ALKJDFKLDSKLJF oh my godddd I love that so much
Alex definitely would, she'd get so excited about it and immediately translate. (Rossi would immediately be like "NERD.")
but Robin would definitely be one of her favorites!! I feel like she would identify the most with Nancy in the first season, but when Robin is introduced she's like oh wait a minute
