NAME CHANGE!
Change is good. We’ve all heard it before... But change is especially great after nearly a decade.
Mary Deth & I started Mittenz at the ages of 14 and 15. Originally it was just a name for our acoustic Tegan & Sara-inspired project. We slowly started to accumulate band members after that, turning our sound into pop punk, then back to acoustic, and so on. We’ve had so many great people to join our band, only to part ways eventually. Perhaps it was because we were still growing as musicians, and were inevitably unsure of which direction we wanted to take our band. I feel that no matter where the two of us go, we will always be referred to as Mittenz, not just because of our musical history, but as a pair of very good friends with an interesting bond.
It wasn’t until Lindsay joined the band that we started taking our music into a more aggressive rock sound. I remember that we would always attempt at it, but like I said, to be young and try to put your foot down with a definite direction is practically impossible. So when she joined, we had finally found a common ground and knew exactly how we wanted to sound (check out those rhyming skillz!). However, there were a few problems with our band name. Mittenz did not seem to make any sense. First of all, there are 3 of us now, and unless you have 3 hands, mittens are supposed to be in pairs. Secondly, our music isn’t cute and cuddly and acoustic anymore. We didn’t want to be limiting our audience with just a name. So a few months ago, we had decided on starting fresh with a brand new name that was suitable to all of us and we couldn’t be more stoked on it.
We have settled on “The Anti-Queens” taken from the term “Antiking” which dates back to the 900’s up until the 1400’s. Basically, an Antiking is someone who declares himself King through election and was not born into royalty. For us, that really strikes a chord. We’ve worked hard by managing ourselves for years, just trying to get our name out there. Not being born with a silver spoon in our mouths, and yet having such wonderful friends, family & fans to support us all the way to the top.
We hope that you are all on board with us, and will continue to support us in future endeavors. We are still the same band, we just wanted to grow some balls.
