Wells Fargo

Everything is more lurid in the bright desert sun, especially blood spattered across ice white salt. Johanna rounded the back of the wagon in a daze, magnetically pulled by the sound of wailing, and the horrible scene unraveled before her like a crimson banner.

Fargo sagged on the ground against the wooden wheel, his pant leg in tatters, squirming and squeezing at a golf ball-sized hole punched into the meat of his calf. Thick blood pulsed from the wound, turning the salt around him into a puddle of sludge, and Johanna goggled at it. How could there be this much blood in a person? How could he still be alive?

“Your belt!” Fargo screamed, “Give me your belt!”

Johanna let her nail gun holster fall as she fumbled it off and dropped to her knees, but the sight of the ground through his leg made her freeze up, “What… What happened?”

Fargo snatched the belt away, double looped it, then tossed it back, “Over my foot, higher than the hole. Buckle out. Make it tight!”

Johanna tried to act quickly, but Fargo cried out every time she jostled his leg and when she ratcheted the tourniquet below his knee, he instinctively kicked, catching her in the stomach. Johanna wheezed, then threw her full weight onto his shin and wrenched the leather even tighter for good measure.

Fargo shrieked, thrashed, then promptly passed out.
