âMade in Oakland by a group of Bay Area artists, The North Pole tells the story of best friends Nina, Marcus and Benny. Born and raised in North Oakland (âThe North Poleâ to locals), they struggle to save their neighborhood as it falls prey to the ills of rising rents, high-priced coffee and the misguided plans of bio-engineering startups.â
âWhile filming this past summer, the showâs themes seeped onto set. Two people in their crew received eviction notices. And, during an impromptu group discussion, they learned that the family of eleven next-door was facing eviction, as well. To Healey, it underscored the need for comedy: âLaughter is about reclaiming power."â
âDirector Josh Healey:Â
The North Pole is a metaphor for the parallels between urban displacement and ecological disruption. Here in North Oakland and up in the Arctic, the climate is changing â and the native species (Oakland natives here, polar bears there) is going extinct.Â
But for us making this show, itâs not just a metaphor. This is our home. This is our environment.Â
One of the things we want to challenge with the show is this idea that âclimate activismâ is just about stopping greenhouse gases or saving the whales. Itâs really about changing the fundamental nature of this hyper-capitalist economy that is destroying environments across the globe. And that includes for poor people and people of color who are being pushed out of Oakland.â

The eco-friendly design just got a big lift in San Francisco, and it is spreading globally.
âSan Francisco became the first US city to require that certain new buildings be built with a green roofâan eco-friendly design technique that sows plants above a roofline. This latest action builds on a growing trend that has taken root around the world, and which boosters say offers significant benefits for the planet.
The new law, introduced by San Francisco Supervisor Scott Wiener, going into effect in January 2017, will require between 15 to 30% of roof space on most new construction projects to incorporate solar, green roofs, or a blend of both.
The ordinance builds on an earlier bill passed by the cityâs Board of Supervisors in April that requires new residential and commercial buildings 10 stories or shorter to install solar panels or a solar heating system that covers 15% of the roofâŠ
Green roofs reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality, and help mitigate the urban heat island effect. For building tenants and owners, green roofs reduce the need for heating and cooling. They also can provide food and a recreational area for residents.
Combining solar panels and green roofs can actually make each component work better. Solar panels can provide shade for plants and grasses, reducing the need for watering, while the panels work best when they are cool (green roofs can help lower temperatures compared to conventional ones).â

The Fairmont Waterfront Hotel in Vancouver, Canada, is proof that green roofs do more than look pretty or add insulation. They also grow foodâin this case bay leaves that a local chef picks to use in his dishes.
Tokyoâs historic Imperial Hotel proves that rooftops donât have to contain either plants or solar panelsâthey can do both. It has melded the two into the shape of a garden pond.
Chicago is one of several US cities promoting the use of green roofs. It put plants atop its own iconic Chicago City Hall, bringing color to its roof and lowering its summer temperature.

âIn its latest aerial survey released Friday, the U.S. Forest Service said 62 million trees have died this year in California, bringing the six-year total to more than 102 million.
Scientists blame five-plus years of drought on the increasing tree deaths â tree âfatalitiesâ increased by 100 percent in 2016 â but the rate of their demise has been much faster than expected, increasing the risk of ecologically damaging erosion and wildfires even bigger than the largest blazes the stateâs seen this year.
There are about 21 million acres of trees spread across Californiaâs 18 national forests, and the latest figures show 7.7 million of them â more than one-third â are dead.
âThe U.S. Forest Service has earmarked $43 million in California to help restore eroded sections of roads and trails throughout the stateâs wooded areas, but officials say too much money is being spent on fighting wildfires that are becoming more and more common, as opposed to restoring the scarred forests.
Itâs been a record-setting year for those wildfires, which have burned through 56 percent of the U.S. Forest Serviceâs budget, leading U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to petition Congress to classify wildfires as disasters, which would free up additional federal funding to fight themâŠ
The majority of the 102 million dead trees are in the southern and central Sierra Nevada region, the survey found, but the Forest Service also warned of tree deaths on the rise in northern regions, especially in Siskiyou, Modoc, Plumas and Lassen counties.â

âBetween early 2015 and the first quarter of this year, the United States eliminated nearly 118,000 oil and gas positions. Oil and gas rigs struggled over the summer as the price of oil fell below $40 per barrel. In the mining sector, lower commodity prices and increasing production costs are contributing to the labor decline. But as these jobs are lost, new opportunities are opening up in the solar industry for workers with the right skill set. Today, close to 209,000 U.S. workers are employed in solar, and the number is predicted to rise to 420,000 workers by 2020.â

SF Mural Arts has not only digitally mapped out all the incredible murals in San Francisco, but they have also credited and cataloged them by both artist & location. This is particularly great because when you come across a mural you dig, you can then find all that artistâs other work across the city and on your phone.
The iphone app with geo location on it is called âSF Muralsâ which you can use to wander through the streets and hit dozens of pieces on a single stroll. Â The app is a little bit dated but worked fine for me (make sure you allow geo-location after you download), and if you have an android phone or just donât want another app, you can simply use the browser version of âMurals by neighborhoodâ on your phone at: sfmuralarts.com/neighborhoods.
Itâs great when youâre waiting around for something or just need a break, you can fire up the app and wander to some amazing art nearby.

SFâs First âProtected Intersectionâ Breaks Ground at 9th & Division This Week.
âNinth and Division is one of the intersections in the cityâs âhigh-injury network,â the 12% of streets where severe and fatal crashes are most likely to occur.Â
The new intersection will install concrete islands at two corners to promote slower turns, and raised crosswalks also intended to slow down cars. A new bikeway design to separate cyclists and pedestrians is also planned.Â
As part of the project, Ninth Street will become two-way from Division to Brannan, with a new sidewalk and angled parking on the south side to narrow the roadway. The parking-protected bikeway on Division (13th Street underneath the freeway), installed between Bryant and Folsom last year, will also be extended between Ninth Street and Potrero Avenue in both directions.âÂ
