All parents damage their children. It cannot be helped. Youth, like pristine glass, absorbs the prints of its handlers. Some parents smudge, others crack, a few shatter childhoods completely into jagged little pieces, beyond repair.

❛Come now, 'Zelma, it's bedtime. 'F I leave you up much longer, Santa won't come. Ponine'll have all her presents, and you'll 'ave nothing. You'll be absolutely miserable. Do you want that? ❜ She took her hands from her hips, and extended them to the little thin thing before her. Azelma was a different breed from Eponine & from the Monsieur. There was something famished and sad within her; a tiredness that sat upon childish bones and greyed them until they looked neither white nor black; simply grey. Uncontroversial. Ordinary.
❛Come on, up you get. ❜ She beckoned the child close, and stooped a little, their eyes at equal level. But it was a mother's duty to know her child. Her face softened (if only for a moment) and she made a small noise, as soft as her cracked throat would go. The Madame had learned to read the greyness, just as any jungle cat would learn their cub's scent as they prowled around, hackles raised and jaws widened. To the untrained eye, Azelma was simply a quiet, obedient girl. To her mother, she was a living, breathing ornament -- fascinating and something to take pride in. Something to protect, to be greedy over, as beautiful an ornament as any piece of gold; a golden thing that the Madame had created and nurtured and grown, no less. The grey colouring about the child was not a fault; it was a blessing. It was easy to colour over grey; it was easy to cover it up, to imprint one's own desire's over it. It was easy to paint Azelma as the lady the Madame never got the chance to be. Happy and affluent and adored. Did it matter if the child was viewed, not as a human, but as a THING, a piece of furniture to be loved and tempered and fascinated with? Did it matter if the Madame promised -- crossed her heart and swore to Jesus (though she never really have much time for the bloke. Maybe when she needed things) -- that she loved the girl? Just -- not because she was a girl, but because she was her girl? HER daughter? Did it matter? ... Did it? Her lips pursed, and the gentle spread of maternal arms becomes rougher, out of a reverent necessity. She picks the girl up with a grunt, and rests Azelma on one hip, her arms tied around her like a safety belt. ❛Just you wait, my girl, ❜ she muttered and absentmindedly kissed the creature's head. ❛you'll find better things t' be miserable about.❜

"Yeah, ‘bout that…”
"I never actually learned to swim, I just didn’t expect it t’ be so hard…”

she wipes the blood from her brow with a shaking hand, glaring at her mother fiercely. ( why does she even pretend to care anymore ? )
” ‘s none of your business, maman. “
why does she ask? it's obvious, for one. and not that the answer is obvious, it is that the blood itself is very, very noticeable. then, there is the matter of her drunkenness; always a charitable factor. in truth, she doesn't know why she asks except for the answer: it is what she's used to. she feels a duty to do so, and not a duty to eponine, but a duty to habit. to the past which always took its due.
hands which had been reaching towards the blood still, and her fingers twitch, before she pushes ahead anyway, completely ignoring eponine as she takes the girl's chin in her hand sharply to inspect the wound. " 'at's a nasty cut. i suppose you were fighting? again? my my. 's a miracle you aren't dead in the streets by now. " all 'nastiness' is intentional. she feels eponine's rejection like a smart blow to the face; she vaguely knows it's true, and acutely knows she doesn't care what's true. if this is maternal love, it is demonic also.
