LinkedIn is a person-to-person business network

On Twitter, it's OK to have an account under the name of your business or brand. But on Facebook (or in this case, LinkedIn) creating an account under your business name and then asking others to connect with you displays a fundamental misunderstanding of how social media in general — and LinkedIn in particular — should work.

Facebook offers Facebook Pages for brands that want to interact with people, and LinkedIn has LinkedIn Companies.

TNA AND THE 111KM HAWKESBURY CLASSIC

The bold adventurers of Team TNA are not content with completing the 2012 Oxfam Trailwalker Sydney in 28 hours and raising $7,525 to support Oxfam’s important work here and around the world. More adventure please!

So for the second year in a row, on the night of 27 October Team TNA will be racing a kayak 111km down the Hawkesbury River. Alan will be in the kayak doing the paddling, and Tony will be doing the essential support crew duty, involving driving through the night to isolated bush locations, to setup temporary camp and reheat food at checkpoints.

In a vain attempt to disguise the true purpose of the race, we will do our best to raise much-needed funds for the Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant Foundation. You don’t have to join in the pretence that this is all about raising money for charity, but if you did, Arrow would be awfully grateful and you can donate online here.

OK, maybe if we try really hard, there is something in it that relates to our work: the way language informs perception. It turns out, you can't distinguish one colour from another unless you have words in your language for both colours. What we usually think of as colours, after all, are actually just mutually-agreed sections of the light spectrum.

How does that relate to our work? Perhaps one reason it's so hard for industry, investors and government to get their heads around tech startups is that they still lack the vocabulary needed to describe all the differences between a startup and a traditional business. Perhaps when the new vocabulary we're all now fluent in (phrases like "conversion", "product-market fit" and "pivot") permeates into mainstream culture, our work will become easier.

So next time you meet a Captain Of Industry, teach him a few new words and phrases. If he adopts them, perhaps he'll gradually learn to see your business — and his — in a whole new way.

NEW ROOMIES AND OFFICE DOG

We generally try to keep everything about TNA ‘in the Cloud’ — documents, correspondence, team communications, accounts and client projects, all reside in the Cloud.

It helps us work anywhere, anytime, and it reduces our fixed operating costs, meaning we need to do less work to earn an income, meaning we get to spend more time reading, being with our loved ones, playing music and going swimming at the beach.

We’re not yet at the stage of being able to move our people into the cloud, so reluctantly our team must occupy chairs and desks somewhere, some of the time. We’ve been at the fantastic Newportnet for several months but this week join our roomies from Newportnet, Stem Media, at a new shared office in beach-side Mona Vale.

Emily and Stu of Stem Media are almost* the ideal roomies, doing AV production from script-writing to camera, editing and post-production. We’ve done a bunch of video work in the past year for clients including AMP, Wolters Kluwer and UrsaClemenger and we’re excited to have video production capacity in our own office space now.

Stu and Em are joined by Hope, their office pooch, who generally likes to greet visitors, play a little chew-the-hand, and keep the rugs warm. Do drop in and say hi. There’s great food and coffee on the block and, as always, the beach is just across the road.
